‘We would much appreciate if you could label us as Norway’: Norwegian ministry asks Twitter to remove Nigeria labels

In an apparent instance of name confusion, Norway’s foreign ministry complained to Twitter on Tuesday that it had been mistakenly labeled as representing Nigeria.

Both the foreign minister Anniken Huitfeldt and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere’s Twitter accounts were also identified as representing Nigeria.

Some accounts on Twitter have labels and little flag icons to indicate their association with governments; however, this appears to be a significant blunder that surely cannot be expected from a billion-dollar platform.

“Dear @TwitterSupport, as much as we enjoy our excellent bilateral relations and close alphabetical vicinity with Nigeria, we would much appreciate if you could label us as Norway,” the Norwegian foreign ministry tweeted.

  • Climate Change: Floods in Nigeria kills at least 600 people

The death toll from devastating floods in Nigeria this year has increased to 603.

Some 1.3 million people have been displaced, and more than 200,000 homes have been destroyed.

Flooding is expected to continue until the end of November.

Seasonal flooding is not new in the African country, but this year has been substantially worse than usual.

In addition to the disruption of food and fuel sources, there are worries about the increasing spread of disease.

Sadiya Umar Farouk, Nigeria’s minister for humanitarian affairs and disaster management, urged local authorities to evacuate residents in the riskiest locations during a press conference on Sunday.
She said that authorities are already giving food and other forms of assistance to those in need.
She continued by saying that several state administrations “failed not to prepare” for the disaster despite “concerted efforts” and early warnings.
Of Nigeria’s 36 states, 27 have been impacted by the disaster.

‘Nigeria chota ghareeb sa mulk’, Twitterati reacts to Faisal Vawda’s comment

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Vawda, on live television, called Nigeria a ‘chota ghareeb sa mulk’ [a small poor country].

Twitterati immediately started drawing comparisons between Pakistan and Nigeria, trying to school the senator with facts.

A Twitter user wrote, “Imagine the embarrassment for the Foreign Office (FO) if the Nigerian Ambassador lodges a formal protest with them tomorrow.”

Sports journalist Faizan Lakhani reacted to the comments by posting a video of Prime Minister Imran Khan face-palming himself.

Journalist Shiraz Hassan wrote, “I don’t know in what context he said that but we know that Nigeria has already won two medals in #Tokyo2020 – both by women athletes.”

Another Twitter user wrote, “Pakistan 2020 GDP: $263.6B, Nigeria 2020 GDP: $432B. How Mr. Vawda came to the conclusion that Nigeria is ‘small and poor’ really escapes me.”
