    No new subvariant of Covid-19 spreading in Pakistan: NIH

    The Ministry of National Health Services has refuted news reports that said a new subvariant of Covid-19 is spreading in Pakistan.

    “NCOC-NIH refutes the news of any new COVID-19 subvariant. Currently, XBB Omicron sub-variant is already the dominant variant for the last 3 months. NCOC is closely monitoring the situation,” the ministry wrote in a tweet.
    According to the spokesperson of the National Institute of Health (NIH), Pakistan has had a total of 29 cases of XBB (Omicron) since it first appeared, but no cases of BF.7 have been reported as yet.

    A review meeting was held on tuesday to review prevalence of the virus in the country under the chairmanship of Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif .
    The Premier commended the efforts put in by all the relevant officials and NCOC to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

    The meeting was informed in detail about the current situation of Covid in the world including the region and in Pakistan, new variants of the pandemic, measures taken to prevent them and status of vaccinations.

    According to the National Institute of Health (NIH),171 cases of Covid-19 with a positivity rate of 1.53 per cent were reported in Pakistan on June 20.

    The number of positive cases has risen to 1,532,153. However, no death was reported. A total of 11,212 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours .

    The positivity rate in Sindh’s capital Karachi has reached to 5 per cent. The Sindh government has also requested citizens to get booster shots.

    In April, Pakistan reported zero Covid-19-related deaths for the first time since the breakout of the pandemic in the country.

    In March this year, the government announced the closure of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC). The body was set up in March 2020 to deal with Covid-19.

    Surge in Covid-19 cases in Pakistan

    Pakistan’s Covid-19 positivity rate has gone to 1.22 per cent today (Thursday), according to the National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad.

    According to NIH data, 144 people have been found infected with the virus and one death has been reported.

    The positivity rate was at 0.83 per cent on Wednesday with 106 cases.

    In April, Pakistan reported zero Covid-19-related deaths for the first time since the breakout of the pandemic in the country.

    In March, the government announced the closure of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC). The body was set up in March 2020 to deal with Covid-19.
