    May 28 2022 – Saturday

    Good morning,*|MERGE1|*

Fuel prices increased last week, and all I can think about these days are the ways to control my fuel consumption. By getting on a bicycle, you will not only save your money but help the planet too. However, if you are a woman then good luck with all the cat calling you will have to face, unless you are a foreigner visiting Pakistan. Sadly, Pakistan’s public transportation system is not up tp the mark but if you have the option of using it, do it. Car parking kay malse se bhi jaan chot jae gi. The idea which I like the most is car polling. Recruit some coworkers and try car pooling. Paise bhi bachein ge aur workplace gossip kay lie baar baar cigarette break bhi nahi leni pare ga. Otherwise, lock yourself up in your room and only watch Pakistani content..aahh the Pakistani content Actor Adnan Siddiqui wants all of us to watch. Talking about Pakistani content, have you seen the clip from Pakistani drama Kaise teri Khud Garzi? That went viral on social media? What is the story line? Why are they romanticizing a man abusing a woman? What’s so romantic about non-consensual intimacy? I hope we learn to show romance in a non-problematic way. These kind of dramas are big No for me but I’m  eagerly waiting for one Pakistani drama: season two of Midsummer Chaos. The writer shared the news of the upcoming second season in a tweet. The drama serial got a lot of attention last year, with most people making fun of the the actors. But I think it was a great attempt by a young filmmaker. At least, they tried to portray sensitive issues in a sensible manner, which is far better than showing abusive men getting turned on by listening to their name. How can I forgot to mention Joyland? The movie  won the Jury Prize in the “Un Certain Regard” at Cannes, which is a first for not only Pakistan but for the sub-continent also. It has made us all proud. Noor had a conversation with the team of Joyland, and Uzair and I discussed the best look at Cannes.  And last week, Ashar went to try food from ‘De Meal,’ and he loved the food.

Have a good day! In the meantime, I hope the government announces a four day work week.

This week our former PM, Imran Khan wants elections in six days or he will come back to do a dharna in Islamabad. Our Prime Minister made his first address to the nation and announced a relief package. Anchor Shahzeb Khanzada said that Khan’s march to Islamabad, which happened earlier last week and was bombarded with tear gas and shelling, wasn’t successful because people just didn’t show up. And according to the anchor, some PTI leaders are saying it’s because Khan didn’t give them enough time to prepare for the dharna. Also, a leaked Malik Riaz audio, speaking with PPP’s Zardari made it to TV screens. Riaz is telling Zardari that Khan wants to make up with Zardari. Zardari says no chance bro. So, the game is definitely on. The coming week, Khan’s six day deadline will expire on Wednesday. Let’s see what Khan will do next.

What inflation? I find it amusing how Pakistani consumers grumble about skyrocketing vehicle prices while continuing to purchase top-end vehicles they fancy.

In case you missed it, Honda Atlas Cars Limited made a profit after tax of Rs2.50 billion in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2022 (FY2022), compared to a profit of Rs1.79 billion in the same period last year. This represents a 40 per cent increase over the previous year.
Let’s talk Apple! iPhones have once again become the best-selling smartphones globally in the first quarter of 2022. The iPhone 13 was the most popular smartphone in Q1 2022, followed by the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max listed in the top five.

This comes as a surprise since I wasn’t expecting Apple to report such impressive sales figures considering their hefty prices.

There are no Samsung flagships among the top five, but the company’s budget phones have risen to the top. The Samsung Galaxy A32 was ranked fifth, while the Galaxy A12 was ranked third in the world.

A female researcher working with the corporate accountability campaign group SumOfUs alleged that her avatar in Meta’s virtual reality platform Horizon Worlds was sexually abused.

The report said: “A SumOfUs researcher was led into a private room at a party where she was raped by a user who kept telling her to turn around so he could do it from behind while users outside the window could see – all while another user in the room watched and passed around a vodka bottle.”

SumOfUs director Vicky Wyatt, while talking to BBC, said that while the attack did not take place in real life, “it still counts, it still has a real impact on users.”

The group claims that the researcher also witnessed homophobic slurs and virtual gun violence.

Wyatt said that Meta needs to act now to deal with issues.

The metaverse is not a single place, and it is stated to include a variety of 3D virtual environments, including well-known games and virtual worlds.

  • Ban, what ban? Local alternatives to your favourite imported products

Ban, what ban? Local alternatives to your favourite imported products

Usually when we hear the word “imported”, the first that comes to our mind is good quality products and when we hear the word “local”, we think of not so great, local quality products. However, more small- to medium-enterprises are now making better quality products at low costs. The government yesterday announced that luxury or non-essential commodities have been completely banned in the country to help the nation emerge from its financial crisis. After the announcement, many are wondering how will they get their hands on their favourite imported products.

The Current has complied a list of local products that you can as alternative to imported products.

    Mobile phones

The production of mobile phones by local manufacturing plants has more than doubled against the import in the country during 2021. You will not be able to get your hands on Apple Iphones but you thankfully there are many locally made options, like Vivo, Techno, and Oppo among many others.

    Home appliances

Major appliances, also known as white goods, comprise major household appliances and may include: air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, drying cabinets, freezers, refrigerators, kitchen stoves, water heaters, washing machines, trash compactors, and microwave ovens

Haier, is one of Pakistan’s most well-known brands, it also exports air conditioner. Dawlance, PEL, and Orient are three other important corporations that participate in Pakistani exports.

    Shoes

You can find some of the best shoes in Pakistani markets. Everyone loves khussas and apart from local bazars like liberty, zainab market and others, there are many local brands you can shop from.

Mochari, is a good local brand for shoes and bags.

    Sauces

Sauces are essential for good food. The government has banned imported sauces but you can try Pakistani brand Dipitt.

    Sanitary ware

Sanitary ware is an umbrella term that refers to sanitary appliances found in bathrooms and kitchens. There are local alternatives although they don’t last as long as the imported ones. But then apparently the ban is also temporary so perhaps wait before you remodel that bathroom or kitchen.

    Tissue paper

I think it goes without saying that Rose Petal is the household name in Pakistan when it comes to tissue paper.

    Shampoos

We have personally heard some good reviews about Conatural’s shampoo. In addition, you can easily find local Sunsilk, Lifebuoy among others in local shops

In the summer, one can’t live without icecream and Hico Pakistan makes some really good flavours.. Their cookie and cream is the best! Walls is another local alternative.

    Pasta

Bake Parlor Pasta is a good alternative to international brands.

    Juices

Imported juices have also been banned but have we don’t have to worry as we our own local brand for juices. Who does not love to drink Shezan mango juice in this weather? And Nestle fruit juices are also locally produced.

    Toiletries

Personal care items are necessary but a ban on imported items should not stop you from taking care of yourself. You can try many local brands.
