Govt snags big committees usually given to opposition

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has bagged the chairpersonship of crucial Senate committees.

The Opposition does not have the chairpersonship of law and justice, interior and human rights committees anymore, Hasnaat Malik reported in The Express Tribune.

The chairpersonship of the Senate Committee on Human Rights was first offered to the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). However, instead of retaining it, the PPP passed it on to the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

“The Opposition parties, either due to internal differences among themselves or backchannel understanding, have been unable to head committees wherein they could have given a tough time to the government in the upper house,” tweeted Hasnaat.

The PML-N nominated Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed as the chairman of the human rights committee. However, he bartered it with the government and instead became the head of the Standing Committee on Defence in return.

Earlier, Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar from the PPP was the chairman of the Senate Committee of Human Rights. He took up several human rights issues, including attacks on journalists.

Mustafa took to Twitter and wrote, “Top of the agenda items for the day was to clip the wings of the Human Rights Committee to turn it into a standing Committee from a funtional one.”

The government has already modified the rules through the house and converted the functional committee on human rights into a standing committee, which has limited powers. The standing committee can only take up matters related to the human rights ministry.

Jumma Mubarak!  *|MERGE1|*, It’s June 4th. I really hope today’s weather remains good!

Nowadays, I am just thinking ke meri vaccine ki baari kab aayegi. Earlier this week, the government announced that from June 3, people above 18 would start getting vaccination. I really hope my turn will come this week.

Do you know the Sindh government just announced that non-vaccinated people will not get salaries? I  think this is the right step and other provinces should do that too.

It is going to be sunny in several cities today, but baarish ki bhi thori possibility ha in Islamabad and Peshawar.

Lose your weight turns into losing your wife

    What is the fuss about?

A 28-year-old man from Karachi got divorced as his wife claimed that he was not the person she got married to.

Mr Cheema, a resident of Karachi, was working in a multinational company. He has been recently transferred to his company’s office in Lahore for a three-month project.

He weighed almost 135 kgs and wanted to surprise his wife on his return to Karachi with a massive bodyweight loss.

He subscribed to a low carb meal plan from an international health meal chain in Lahore, called On the Go by AK (OTG).

His dedication to avoid Lahori food and strictly follow his diet plan transformed his body.

As a man with a better physique and appearance, he was ready to surprise his wife after three months. But to his surprise, he was not allowed to enter the house. His wife failed to recognise him and said: “This is not the man who married me.” A huge drama was created and everyone in the neighbourhood also witnessed it.

The residents reported that the husband took the insulting remarks from his wife personally, and his aggression escalated beyond control. The fight led to a divorce.

Mr Cheema filed a lawsuit against On the go by AK (OTG) as he held the company responsible for his divorce.

A representative from OTG has discredited the information of a lawsuit, claiming no such action was taken by their client.

OTG claimed that the client was provided with a healthy weight loss diet to lose weight for which they have been successful. Losing 40 kgs in three months was the highest weight loss by a client in such time, OTG mentioned.

Celebrities and the meme community have urged followers to subscribe to a meal plan from OTG as a protest against such people in society.

Many A-listers influencers use our High-end meal plans to stay in shape but never have we seen such drama in the past.

  • Netanyahu’s grip on power loosens as rival moves to unseat him

Netanyahu’s grip on power loosens as rival moves to unseat him

Far-right party leader Naftali Bennett threw his crucial support on Sunday behind a “unity government” in Israel to unseat Prime Minister Benjamin (PM) Netanyahu, in what would be the end of a political era.

Bennett’s decision, which he announced in a televised address, could enable opposition chief Yair Lapid to put together a coalition of right-wing, centrist and leftist parties and hand Netanyahu his first election defeat since 1999.

Lapid, head of the centrist Yesh Atid party that finished second to Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud in an inconclusive March 23 national ballot, faces a Wednesday deadline from Israel’s president to announce a new government.

Lapid’s chances of success have rested largely with Bennett, a former defence chief and a high-tech millionaire whose Yamina party’s six seats in the 120-member parliament are enough to give him the status of kingmaker.

Under a prospective power-sharing deal, Bennett would replace Netanyahu, the 71-year-old head of the Likud party, as prime minister and later give way to centrist Lapid in a rotation agreement.

“I am announcing today that I intend to work with all my might towards establishing a unity government with Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid,” Bennett said in his speech. “It’s either a fifth election, or a unity government.”

Responding on television to Bennett’s announcement, Netanyahu accused him of perpetrating “the fraud of the century”, citing past public promises Bennett made not to join up with Lapid. He said a right-wing government was still a possibility.

Israel has held four elections since April 2019 that ended with no clear winner and left Netanyahu and his rivals short of a parliamentary majority, with the veteran leader remaining in office as head of a caretaker government.

The new prospective coalition’s diverse members would have little in common apart from the desire to end the 12-year run of Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving leader, now on trial over corruption charges that he denies.

An anti-Netanyahu alliance would be fragile and require outside backing by Arab members of parliament who oppose much of Bennett’s agenda, which includes more settlement building in the occupied West Bank and its partial annexation.

It would be expected to focus on the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, while setting aside issues on which members disagree, such as the role of religion in society and Palestinian aspirations for statehood.

Netanyahu said such a coalition was a danger to Israel’s security and future.

“What will it do for Israel’s deterrence? How will we look in the eyes of our enemies,” he said. “What will they do in Iran and in Gaza? What will they say in the halls of government in Washington?”

A Bennett-Lapid agreement had already been reported to be close when violence broke out between Israel and Gaza militants on May 10 and Bennett suspended the discussions. The fighting ended with a ceasefire after 11 days.

A Palestine Liberation Organization official said after Bennett’s speech that the prospective government would be “extreme rightist” and no different than administrations headed by Netanyahu.

Trying to scupper an opposition deal, Netanyahu made a three-way counter-offer on Sunday to stand aside in favour of another right-wing politician, Gideon Saar.

Under that blueprint, Saar would serve as prime minister for 15 months, Netanyahu would return for two years, and Bennett would then take over for the rest of the government’s term.

However, Saar, a former Likud cabinet minister, swiftly rejected the offer.

Netanyahu’s rivals have cited his corruption case as a main reason why Israel needs a new leader, arguing that he might use a new term to legislate immunity to shield himself.

If Lapid, 57, fails to announce a government by Wednesday, at the end of a 28-day period to build a coalition, a new election is likely.
