    PML-N stalwart Ahsan Iqbal arrested

Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday.

The anti-graft watchdog had earlier summoned Iqbal for recording his statement in a multi-billion-rupee case pertaining to the controversial Sports City Project in Narowal.

It was the second time in two months that NAB had summoned the PML-N leader to seek details of his income and expenditures.

According to Dawn, the opposition leader, who is accused of using funds of the federal government and the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for the sports city, had already replied to a questionnaire given to him by the bureau in connection with the same case.

The PML-N leader had said he had submitted documents related to his income and expenditures to NAB Rawalpindi.

He claimed that he had nothing to do with the case as the project had been launched in 2009 during the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government when he was not a federal minister.

He said that before Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) came to power, the project was 90 per cent complete, but the present government had turned it into ruins.

“In fact NAB should take those people to task who are responsible for the destruction of a national asset,” he added.

The PML-N leader said that when he became a federal minister, the NSC project was in the doldrums and like many other stalled projects, the PML-N government revived it and took it to near completion.

Meanwhile, analysts have expressed concern over the arrest, saying that Iqbal was the sole PML-N leader commenting on former military ruler Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf’s death sentence in the high treason case.

The Daft Draft: Judging society’s stereotypes with illustrated wit

The Daft Draft on Instagram has over 7,000 followers, many of whom are influencers. The appeal: taking on societal stereotypes, illustrating them in pop culture graphics and making us all question the method of our societal madness.

A popular post by TheDaftDraft, poking at society’s desire for the gori bahu

We spoke with the person behind the instagram account and found that that she, (it is a woman), knew how to use photoshop but learnt how to use illustrator by watching YouTube videos.

Two years ago, “a traumatic incident regarding a family member being unwell put me through a very rough phase in my life,” she says. After the incident, she decided not to be defined by misfortune but decided to use her humour to give her the power to come back, “stronger, happier and in my case, funnier”.

She is obviously from Karachi, since no other city would understand the trudge from central Defence to KDA

She learnt how to use illustrator four months ago, “because I had all these ideas and no way of communicating them in an interesting way,” and she feels that not only does she get her message across, she is also setting, “an appropriate tone”.

The Daft Draft’s humor also includes Karachi-specific ‘legends’ such as ‘Slims, Pick-a-Pack Party Chilli Chips’

“I also love knowing that I can make people laugh, it makes me feel like I’m contributing something good to society”. Her account has become very popular in a short amount of time and she now is also running a website where you can buy the designs.

For her innovative way of poking fun at society, and pushing through life’s difficult times to come out stronger, The Daft Draft, is this week’s Sunday Superstar.

  • Treason case: Gen (r) Musharraf handed death sentence

Former military dictator General (r) Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday was handed death sentence in the high treason case against him.

The case was being heard by a a special bench comprising Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice (CJ) Waqar Ahmad Seth Akbar and Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court (LHC). The bench was formed on the orders of the Supreme Court (SC).

According to reports, the court, in its short order, said that it analysed complaints, records, arguments and facts in the case for three months, adding that it found Musharraf guilty of high treason according to Article 6 of the constitution.

    It was a majority verdict.

    TREASON CASE:

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government had in 2013 filed the treason case against Musharraf over the president’s imposition of extra-constitutional emergency in November 2007.

Earlier this year, head of the prosecution, Mohammad Akram Sheikh, tendered his resignation. In his resignation letter sent to the interior secretary, Sheikh expressed his inability to proceed with the case after the imminent change of government at the centre.

Akram was appointed as the head of the prosecution in the case in November 2013, by the then ruling PML-N.

Musharraf was indicted in the case in March 2014 after he appeared before the court and rejected all charges.

On March 18, 2016, the former president left the country for Dubai for medical treatment after his name was removed from the exit control list (ECL) on the orders of the Supreme Court (SC).

A few months later, the special court had declared him a proclaimed offender and ordered the confiscation of his property owing to his continuous inability to appear.

Later, his passport and identity card were also cancelled on orders of the apex court.

‘India is the rape capital of the world’ Rahul Gandhi

“India has turned into the rape capital of the world. The international community looks down upon us. Modi sarkar (Modi government) falsely claims that they are protecting women of India day and night.” said Rahul Gandhi in many of his speeches in 2019.

Today, Smriti Irani, BJP’s politician, and former TV star outrageously demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi in the parliament of India.

She said, “For the first time in India, the member of the Gandhi family is saying, the women of India should be raped. He made fun out of this heinous crime.”

Rahul Gandhi denied and accused smirtin Irani of twisting the facts smirti Irani of twisting the facts.

Furthermore, while answering the accusation, he tweeted a video clip of Modi and captioned it, “Modi should apologize for burning the north, for destroying India’s economy, and for the speech which I am attaching.”

    It
is true that Indian is one of the most unsafe countries in the world for women,
however, such insensitive comments should be avoided in public spheres.

  • US threatens India with sanctions over ‘anti-Muslim’ citizenship bill

US threatens India with sanctions over ‘anti-Muslim’ citizenship bill

The United States (US) has threatened Indian government officials with sanctions for failing to list Muslims among ‘persecuted’ minorities, RT reported.

According to the details, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has claimed that it was “deeply troubled” by the citizenship bill, which passed the Indian parliament’s lower house, the Lok Sabha, in a 311-80 vote, calling it nothing short of a “religious test for Indian citizenship” which “excludes Muslims.”

The commission said, “The United States government should consider sanctions against the home minister and other principal leadership if the bill passes”, insisting that it knows how Indian internal politics works best.

Dubbed the Citizenship Amendment Bill, the new law will fast-track Indian citizenship for immigrants facing religious discrimination in several neighboring countries.

The bill provides that Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians fleeing persecution in Muslim-majority Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan can be granted citizenship of India but there are no similar provisions for Muslim refugees.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah, who introduced the law, has rejected the US butting into India’s internal affairs, insisting the bill is solely intended to protect those facing persecution.

The bill also has backing from Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, who, like Shah, belongs to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Meanwhile, PM Imran Khan has strongly condemned controversial legislation passed by the Indian Parliament, terming the move as “part of the RSS Hindu Rashtra design of expansionism propagated by the fascist Modi government.”.

“We strongly condemn Indian Lok Sabha citizenship legislation which violates all norms of international human rights law and bilateral agreements with Pakistan,” PM Imran tweeted on Monday.

The USCIRF was earlier established in 1998 to monitor and evaluate religious freedoms in other countries and to make policy recommendations to the US president, the State Department and the House of Representatives – routinely calling for sanctions against those countries who don’t live up to American standards.

The commission had earlier placed India on a “watch list” in 2009 over what it said were “largely inadequate” protections for minorities.

  • Dairy farm in Russia makes cows wear VR glasses to increase milk production

Dairy farm in Russia makes cows wear VR glasses to increase milk production

Did you know that a dairy farm in Russia uses VR glasses to make cows give more milk? Yes, we were equally surprised when we got to know this. In RusMoloko dairy, farm cows wear specially designed VR headsets for improved milk productivity.

In their glasses, the cows see sun-filled views of green grazing fields. This helps the cows relax which is directly linked to their milk-productivity.

The summer field views were designed after studying cows’ response to different tones of colors – the cows showed signs of improvement in their mood and decreased anxiety.

The VR headsets were specially adapted to fit cows’ heads.

Experts in the field of technology and dairy farming have collaborated to find a solution to the problem of milk production. They had the solution of perfect-fit VR goggles as a solution to offer a restful atmosphere in addition to fulfilling the cows’ physical needs. However, more studies are underway to study the impact of VR goggles in terms of milk productivity.
