    October to end with lunar eclipse in Pakistan

    The second and last lunar eclipse of the year is going to be partially visible in Pakistan. It will last for some hours but will hit peak at 14 minutes past one o’clock in the night.

    The eclipse will be visible in many parts of Asia, Europe, Australia, America and Africa along with Pakistan. It will start at two minutes past 11 on October 28 and last till 26 minutes past three o’ clock in the morning of October 29.

    In a partial lunar eclipse, a portion of the moon appears darkened when the Earth comes between the Sun and the moon causing the shadow of the planet to fall on the moon.

    Petroleum prices expected to decline as rupee gains ground against US dollar 

    As reported by Geo News on Saturday, there’s an expectation that starting on October 1st, petroleum prices will see a decrease due to the stability of the Pakistani rupee (PKR) against the US dollar (USD). This shift is also attributed to a decline in international market prices. 

    The final decision on these petroleum prices will be made by the Ministry of Finance following consultations with interim Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar. 

    In recent news, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) cautioned against prematurely speculating about petroleum product pricing. This comes after federal ministers suggested that rates for petroleum, oil, and lubricants (POL) might decrease in the next fortnightly review. 

    Earlier statements by Caretaker Federal Commerce and Industries Minister Gohar Ejaz and Interim Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi hinted at a potential drop in POL prices, thanks to the recent strengthening of the Pakistani rupee against the US dollar. 

    Over the past two weeks, the Pakistani rupee has gained about Rs19 against the US dollar. This is significant because Pakistan, as a net importer of POL products, conducts transactions in US dollars. 

    In the previous fortnightly review, the caretaker government had raised petrol prices by more than Rs26 per litre and diesel prices by over Rs17 per litre, reaching record highs at Rs331.38 and Rs329.18 per litre, respectively. 

    OGRA emphasised that the pricing of petroleum products in Pakistan depends on international market trends and the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Pakistani rupee. While international petroleum prices have risen recently, the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Pakistani rupee has improved. 

    However, OGRA pointed out that there’s still one week left before the official announcement of new prices. So, any speculations about price changes during this period are speculative and could disrupt the smooth operation of the oil supply chain.

    October aka Spooktober has already set in motion with the return of the fan favourite horror novel series ‘Goosebumps’, set to release on Disney Plus and Hulu from October 13 onwards. A teaser trailer is already setting social media on fire. The series was created by Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller, and will feature an entirely new cast of child actors.

    The television series is adapted from the popular horror novel series written by R.L Stine, which explores the lives of protagonists who find them selves in scary situations involving ghosts or other supernatural elements.

    The series were previously adapted into a television series in 1995, and a film in 2015, which followed a fictionalised version of Stine teaming up with his daughter to save the neighbourhood after the monsters written in his book escape and begin igniting chaos.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif will perform Umrah in the last days of Ramzan on the invitation of the royal family.

    Nawaz is set to visit the Kingdom on the invitation of the Saudi ruler, with the former Prime Minister being a royal guest in the country.

    The news of Sharif’s planned visit to Saudi Arabia has led to speculation that he may use the opportunity to return to Pakistan. However, there has been no official confirmation from Sharif or his party about his plans to return.

    The PML-N supremo was granted an eight-week bail on medical grounds in October 2019, and, he was allowed to travel to London for treatment for four weeks. However, Nawaz has not returned since then.

    Sharif family concludes 10-day European tour, returns back to London

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, have returned to London with their family after concluding their tour of Europe.

    According to Geo News, Nawaz, Maryam, and their family returned from Geneva and landed at Heathrow Airport. They left London for the tour on November 20.

    It was reported that the Sharif family will visit five European countries during their 10 days trip.

    Three years after her passport was confiscated, Maryam Nawaz travelled to London in October to spend time with her father and the rest of her family.

    Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has announced a significant reduction in petrol prices on Friday, cutting the cost by Rs12.63 per litre to Rs224.80 per litre.

    A reduction of Rs12.13 has also been made to the cost of high-speed diesel, bringing the new price down to Rs235.30 per litre. After a reduction of Rs10.19 per litre, the cost of light diesel oil will be Rs191.83, according to Geo News.

    The new petrol price will go into effect after 12 AM.

    According to a statement from the Finance Division, the government decided to lower the price of petroleum goods in response to a drop in the price of these products on the global market and to help consumers who had been affected severely by inflation.

    PCB to award cash incentives to 15 cricket players

    The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will be giving cash incentives to 15 Pakistani cricket players in recognition of their outstanding performance throughout 2021.

    Chairman PCB Ramiz Raja is expected to present the cash prize of Rs1.5 million to each of the top 15 players who remained an integral part of the unit in all three formats of the game.

    Two Test specialists Abid Ali and Sajjid Khan have also been invited apart from 18 players (three reserves) for their exceptional show in the longer version of the game.

    “The reception to honour the top cricketers is meant to recognise the services of all those cricketers who have helped the team stand tall in almost all the formats of the game,” a PCB official said in a statement.

    “Barring some brief hiccups, the team members have given exceptional performance throughout the year. Be it T20 World Cup performance, Test matches performance at home and abroad, the team has shown exceptional courage in all the departments of the game.”

    “Beating South Africa at their own soil and later sweeping through Bangladesh in their own backyard were exceptional achievements that needed to be recognised,” the PCB official said.

    Pakistan won 20 of 29 T20Is during the year which also saw them putting up some resolute show in the T20 World Cup. The team that was unbeaten eventually lost to Australia in the semi-finals but not before winning many hearts for the competitive element that was on display.

    The reception which will only be attended by the PCB high-ups is supposed to improve morale of the team members in front of the hectic season that also incorporates some important series and T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October/November.

    Pakistan may also host leading international outfits including Australia, England, New Zealand, and West Indies through the coming season.

    Every player in the 15-man squad would receive Rs1.5 million each as cash incentive while the rest of the five including three reserves and two Test specialists will also be awarded.
