    Heatwave in India kills 33, including election officials

    Thirty-three people, including election officials on duty, died of suspected heatstroke in three major Indian states on Friday, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.

    Fourteen people died in Bihar on Thursday, including 10 people involved in organising the seven-phase national elections that are currently underway. Many election officials are usually required to stand on duty all day, many times outdoors.

    Parts of Bihar are voting in the final round of polling on Saturday as well.

    In Uttar Pradesh, nine election personnel, including security persons, died on Friday, government officials said.

    Ten deaths were reported from the government hospital in Odisha on Thursday, authorities said, prompting government to advise against outdoor activities between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm local time when temperatures heighten.

    Three people died of suspected heatstroke in Jharkhand state, neighbouring Bihar.

    India has been experiencing a record hot summer. A locality of the capital Delhi recorded the country’s highest-ever temperature at 52.9°C this week.

    While temperatures in north-western and central India are expected to fall in the coming days, the prevailing heatwave over eastern India is likely to continue for two days, according to India’s Meteorological Department (IMD), which declares a heatwave when the temperature is 4.5°C to 6.4°C higher than normal.

    The last phase of voting is scheduled to be held on Saturday and votes will be in counted on Tuesday.

    However, the deadly heatwave in the South Asian region is expected to continue until Saturday.

    According to the police, a man was apprehended in Odisha’s Sambalpur district on Monday on suspicion of murdering his wife because she didn’t cook rice with curry.

    The incident occurred in Nuadhi village in the Jamankira Police Station region on Sunday evening. The accused has been identified as Sanatan Dharua, a 40-year-old man, while his wife has been identified as Pushpa Dharua, a 35-year-old woman.

    Sanatan and Pushpa have a daughter and a son, with their daughter working as a domestic help in Kuchinda while their son was spending the night at a friend’s house on Sunday.

    Upon returning home, Sanatan discovered that Pushpa had prepared only curry and not rice, sparking an argument that resulted in him assaulting and killing his wife, as per a police officer.

    The matter came to light when Pushpa’s son returned home to find his mother dead. He contacted the authorities, who took the body and detained the husband.

    Jamankira Police Station Inspector-in-charge Premjit Das stated that an autopsy was conducted on Monday and the accused husband was held in custody.

    A 70-year-old Indian woman was killed by an elephant in Odisha, India, while she was collecting water from a tube-well, reports The Print.

    The elephant trampled Maya Murmu. As a result, she sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital where she breathed her last.

    When the family members were performing Maya’s last rituals, the elephant returned and took the corpse from the pyre. It trampled her body again and fled after throwing it. 

    However, Maya’s last rites were finally conducted a few hours later. The elephant had wandered off from the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary.

    According to official data, as many as 3,300 people have been killed in attacks by wild elephants in India in the last seven years. Odisha has suffered the most deaths, with nearly 600 killed between 2014-2021.

     Police arrested a 17-year-old man in India’s Odisha for selling his young wife to a 55-year-old man to buy a cellular phone, India today has reported.

    The teenager got married in July this year. He met a 55-year old man at his work in a brick kiln to whom he sold his wife.

    Police have rescued the 26-year-old wife from the south-eastern Rajasthan district of Baran after facing “great difficulty” because the villagers resisted handing over the woman to the police, saying that they had paid for her.

    Police officials said that the man took his wife to Rajasthan with him in August when he started a job there but only a few days later, he decided to sell her to the 55-year-old man for INR 1.8 lakh (PKR 4.18 lakh).

    After getting the money, the man splurged money on dining and then bought a smartphone. Later on, he returned to his village and when the woman’s family asked about her, he lied that she had run away.

    Police said that the woman’s family did not believe him and decided to register a complaint with the police. Upon further investigation, it turned out that the boy had sold his wife off.

    The report says that since the boy was under 18 years of age, he was sent to a juvenile court. The court ordered the man to be taken to a correctional facility.

    It has hired a Bollywood inspired ghost to keep people stay at their homes.

    Apparently, hired by the village panchayat, a sari-clad woman with chalk-white skin roams around at night to ensure that people follow the lockdown. Her payal makes sound ‘chhan chhan’ when she walks. Villagers get scared and retreat as soon as they see her.
