    ‘Taliban poster’ outside women college tells them to quit education or get killed

    A poster allegedly by proscribed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) outside a women degree college in Samarbagh area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) Lower Dir district has warned the students to abandon education or face dire consequences.

    According to the principal of Government Ghazi Umara Khan Degree College, the poster was pasted outside the institution’s main entrance on Friday night.

    The principal has also sent a letter to the KP Higher Education Department director, asking for security measures for safeguarding the lives of the female students.

    The poster threatened the students with death if they did not stop coming to the college.

    The college management has also informed the Lower Dir administration and the police about the development.

    While the poster has left worried the parents who demand of the district administration to probe the matter and take appropriate preventive measures, the TTP, in a statement, has reportedly distanced itself from the same.

    It is pertinent to note that one of Pakistan’s only two Nobel laureates, Malala Yousafzai, was also shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012 for raising her voice for girl education.

    The attempt on Malala’s life was made while she was on a school bus in the Swat district that was back then under Taliban occupation.

    COVID-19: Karachi authorities seal several eateries for SOPs violation

    Authorities have sealed at least 14 restaurants and two gaming zones in the port city for violating the government’s COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).

    As per reports, Deputy Commissioner South Irshad Ali Sodhar said his team checked 41 restaurants, of which 17 were warned to follow the SOPs, while 11 were instantly sealed for not following the government’s directives at all. Three more eateries and two gaming zones were also shut down.

    “We inspected six shops and warned three of them to comply with the SOPs. That apart, we checked four wedding venues, issued warnings, and fined them with Rs185,000,” Sodhar told The News.

    Meanwhile, the Serena Mobile Market in North Nazimabad, that was sealed earlier on Monday for three days, has been reopened.

    Not only in Karachi, most restaurants in Lahore were also sealed at Mall1 which is located in Gulberg III.

    As Pakistan experiences the second wave of coronavirus, the country has reported 338,875 cases so far.

    Wearing a mask in confined indoor places, crowded spaces, bus stands, and inside public vehicles was declared mandatory for everyone and all commercial activities are allowed till 10 pm.

    Police arrested a man in Peshawar who was posing as a policeman with PTI leader Taimoor Hassan Khan in multiple TikTok videos.

    As per reports, the man is employed as a private bodyguard with Sahibzada Taimur Hassan. The accused posted many videos on social media, which were pointed out by the Capital City Police social media team.

    Fake cards, police uniforms and weapons were recovered from the bodyguard. A case has also been registered against the Sahibzada Taimoor Hassan.

    Pakistan’s COVID-19 positivity nears 5%. What does that mean?

    Pakistan on Tuesday recorded 4.94% COVID-19 positivity rate – highest in three months.  But what does this positivity rate mean?

    The positivity rate is obtained by dividing the number of people who test positive for the coronavirus with the total number of tests conducted in 24 hours. With that we can determine how many people being tested are actually positive for the virus. This is perhaps, the most important indicator of how the virus is spreading.

    According to the details issued by the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC), 1,313 new cases were reported across the country.   A total of 26,565 tests were conducted. Pakistan has reported 337,573 COVID-19 cases so far.

    The country’s death toll stands at more than 6,800 as 18 people lost their lives in the past 24 hours. At least 316,060 have recovered from the virus so far. 

    The country’s positivity rate dropped to less than 2%, a few months ago, which was a great sign but it started increasing last month and now it is around 5%. The highest positivity rate was 23% in July and the minimum was reported at 1.7% in September.

    Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan officially announced that the second wave of the virus has started in the country.

    Meanwhile, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) has tightened restrictions on some high-risk public activities to control the coronavirus spread.

    NCOC has also launched a helpline to report the COVID-19 related violations by the public.

    Now people can report the violation of COVID-19 SOPs like non-wearing of the mask, non-adherence to Social distancing, over-crowding at public places etc, at 0335-333-6262 (0335-333-NCOC) along with a picture and the following details: Location name, tehsil/district/city, date and time, event.

    Punjab reports surge in COVID-19 with 340 new cases in a day

    Punjab on Tuesday reported as many as 340 new cases of the coronavirus, which is the highest single-day surge since July 21.

    As per reports, the number of confirmed cases reported across the province has risen to 104,894 so far.

    According to the Primary and Secondary Health Department, seven more people died due to the coronavirus, lifting the death toll from the disease in the province to 2,372.

    On November 2, provincial authorities had sealed numerous places to curb the virus spread under the micro-smart lockdown. The Punjab government has sealed 830 places across the province after spiking in COVID-19 cases. In these areas, 1416 cases of novel coronavirus were reported. The micro-smart lockdown has been imposed in 435 spots in Lahore, which is the maximum number of areas sealed in the province

    The line became famous when Indian wing commander was captured and then released shortly after his plane was shot down in Pakistani airspace in 2019.

    The viral video showed the captured Indian pilot praising Pakistani tea and the Pakistan Army for treating him with respect. Tea memes broke the internet back then.

    Pakistan helping Syria out in its fight against COVID-19

    A Pakistani plane loaded with medical assistance, aimed at supporting the efforts of the Syrian government to confront the coronavirus pandemic, reached the Damascus International Airport on Sunday.

    Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) organised the aid, including medical equipment, masks, protective gears and other health items, on the request of the Syrian government. Syrian Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Faisal Mikdad expressed gratitude to Pakistani government for supporting Syria, and stated that the shipment sent by Pakistan, was the largest shipment ever received by the country during the health crisis.

    Currently, Syria is considered vulnerable to the pandemic due to dire humanitarian situation and the civil war that has been ongoing for nearly a decade. The total number of COVID-19 infections registered in Syria has reached at 5789, out of which 2021 ones have recovered while 292 others have died.

    Under this situation, Syrian Deputy Health Minister Ahmad Khleifawi stressed the importance of this aid in supporting the country’s health sector, as reported by a Syrian state-run news agency (SANA).

    Since the beginning of the crisis in Syria, some countries have reduced their diplomatic activities in Damascus, but Pakistan has maintained its unbiased political stance towards the war-torn country.

    After receiving the aid, Pakistani Ambassador to Damascus Saeed Muhammad Khan ensured that the aid would be effectively distributed to hospitals and authorities in Syria.

    830 COVID-19 hot-spots sealed in Punjab

    Provincial authorities have sealed numerous areas in Lahore under the micro-smart lockdown strategy. 

    As per reports, the Punjab government has sealed 830 areas across the province after a rise in COVID-19 cases. A total of 1416 coronavirus cases were reported in these areas.

    The micro-smart lockdown has been imposed in 435 spots in Lahore, 37 hot-spots in Bahawalpur, 35 places in Bhakkar, 17 areas in Dera Ghazi Khan, 34 places in Faisalabad and 14 in Gujranwala district.

    Moreover, 44 places in Multan, 29 in Gujrat and many areas in Sahiwal, Sargodha, Shekhupura, Sialkot and other districts of Punjab have been sealed under the micro-smart lockdown.

    Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Planning and Development and NCOC Chairman Asad Umar has stressed for strict implementation of SOPs to control the COVID-19 spread in the country.

    Coronavirus seems to be gradually spreading again across the country as 1,078 new cases have reported over the past 24 hours. According to the NCOC, the total number of confirmed patients of coronavirus has risen to 332,186. 20 people succumbed to the infection during the past 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 6,795.

    Pakistan rejects Indian statements on Gilgit-Baltistan status

    Pakistan has rejected the Indian Ministry of External Affairs’ irresponsible and unwarranted statement regarding Gilgit-Baltistan.

    A Foreign Ministry statement said India has no legal, moral or historical standing on the issue.

    “For more than 73 years, India has been in illegal and forcible occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Regurgitation of false and fabricated claims by India can neither change the facts nor divert attention from India’s illegal actions and continuing humanitarian crisis resulting from the perpetration of the worst human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied valley,” the statement said.

    Pakistan’s position on the Jammu & Kashmir dispute remains firmly anchored in the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions, it said, adding that the final resolution of the Jammu & Kashmir dispute was only possible through the exercise of the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination by holding free and impartial plebiscite under the auspices of the UN.

    “Administrative, political and economic reforms are a long-standing demand of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. The envisaged provisional reforms reflect the aspirations of the indigenous populace of Gilgit-Baltistan,” it said.

    Pakistan called upon India to immediately end its illegal and forcible occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir and “comply with its international obligations by allowing the Kashmiris to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination through a free and impartial plebiscite under the auspices of the United Nations as enshrined in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”

    India had earlier rejected what it called an attempt by Pakistan to bring material changes to a “disputed territory”, after Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan declared the provisional provincial status to Gilgit-Baltistan.
