  • Timeline of military operations in Pakistan

Timeline of military operations in Pakistan

Ever since the War on Terror began, Pakistan has had to conduct multiple military operations to battle with militancy.

In 2007, the first battle was fought in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Swat district between Pakistani security forces and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Parvez Musharraf was the army chief at that time. Following the failure of talks between army and TTP, Musharraf gave the go-ahead to start a military operation named Rah-e-Haq in KP’s Swat district.

By mid-2007, an organization founded by Sunni Islamist cleric and militant Sufi Mohammad Khan, Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariah-Mohammadi, had taken over the majority of the district.

In November 2007, military forces started an operation to eradicate terrorist elements from Sawat Valley.

In 2009, the security situation in Swat again became worse when Mullah Fazlullah appeared on the scene. The army started an operation called Rah-e-Rast, which lasted for three months.

According to the details of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), during Operation Rah-e-Rast, the army killed 2635 militants, detained 254, and wounded 454 others.

The tenure of former army chief Gen (r) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani was full of military operations in tribal areas of the country as the armed forces conducted a military operation named Rah-e-Nijat in 2009 in South Waziristan.

The aim of the operation was to wipe out TTP, including eliminating TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud from the area.

Operation Zarb-e-Azb was launched on June 15, 2014, under the leadership of former army chief Gen Raheel Sharif against multiple militant organization including TTP, the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, al-Qaeda, Jundallah and Lashkar-e-Islam in North Waziristan.

Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad started in 2017. At that time, Nawaz Sharif was the Prime Minister and General Qamar Javed Bajwa was the army chief. The operation’s purpose was to root out terrorism from the entire country.

Now, the Apex Committee on National Action Plan on June 22, 2024, approved a new operation with the name of ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said today that operation Azm-e-Istehkam will be implemented in different areas of Balochistan and KP.

The purpose of ‘Azm-e-Istehkam’ operation is to strengthen the government’s writ in certain areas.

  • Salman Khan’s father explains his son’s decision to stay single

Salman Khan’s father explains his son’s decision to stay single

Bollywood’s legendary screenwriter Salim Khan recently shared that his son, superstar Salman Khan, “is not ready” to get married.
Superstar Salman Khan, aged 58, has starred in about 100 Hindi films, gaining fame for his romantic and action-packed roles and breaking box-office records.

Despite a successful career spanning three decades and immense popularity, Salman hasn’t tied the knot yet.
A video circulating on social media features Salim Khan discussing his son’s single status and the reasons behind the megastar not moving forward with his relationships.

“Salman easily gets into relationships with any girl but doesn’t get married,” Salim Khan stated.

He described Salman as a straightforward man who “always thinks about whether the woman he marries will be able to manage a family like his mother did.”

“When Salman dates someone, he always seeks qualities and abilities similar to his mother’s,” Khan’s father further explained.

He added that Salman is looking for a “wife who would dedicate her time and attention to her husband” and children, just like his mother did.
Salim Khan also said that Salman desires a wife who would cook for the family and take care of all household responsibilities.

  • Shehzad Roy urges government to reverse sales tax on books

Shehzad Roy urges government to reverse sales tax on books

Singer and social activist Shehzad Royal has requested the government to undo the book sales tax it has recently imposed, and restore teacher salary rebates.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the singer said that he also requested the Prime Minister and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal to reinstate the 25 percent tax rebate for teachers.
Shehzad Roy tweeted, “I have spoken with the Prime Minister @CMShehbaz & planning Minister Ahsan iqbal @betterpakistan sahab & requested to reverse the 10 percent sales tax on books and reinstate the 25 percent tax rebate for teachers. They both reassured me that they will reconsider this decision with a favorable outcome.”

The federal government, through the Finance Bill 2024, removed tax rebates for full-time teachers and researchers which created panic in the education sector. The proposal was aimed at teachers at both private and public education institutions.
The Finance Bill proposes a 10 percent sales tax on books, with the condition that any refund of excess input tax would not be allowed. When the International Monetary Fund (IMF) wants Pakistan to tax stationery products, which include books, pens, paper, sticky notes, and similar material, it is uncertain if the government would remove this tax rate.

  • Why did Mehwish Hayat say no to Bollywood?

Why did Mehwish Hayat say no to Bollywood?

Actress Mehwish Hayat has captivated audiences with her versatility in roles in dramas and films like Dillagi, Punjab Nahi Jaungi, London Nahi Jaunga, Daghabaaz Dil and her Hollywood debut Ms. Marvel.
But the star has never appeared in a Bollywood project and now we know why.

She appeared as a guest on Nashpati Prime where she highlighted how fortunate she had been to get offers from Bollywood over her career, but she turned them all down.
Mehwish said, “Luckily, I have been blessed to be part of the revival of Pakistani cinema from the beginning. I’ve worked with Nabeel, I’ve worked with Nadeem, and seeing the love people showed for our films, and how great those films were, made me feel I don’t need to go elsewhere to prove myself. I am appreciated in my own country, where actors receive the respect they deserve. However, it’s unfair that due to film promotions, sometimes we don’t even get to watch our films in cinemas for the first time with our team members. So, I prefer to play on my home ground, play well, and enjoy.”

Sounds like a good enough reason to us too.

  • ‘Budget by babus, of babus, for babus,’ says Bilawal in NA speech

‘Budget by babus, of babus, for babus,’ says Bilawal in NA speech

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Tuesday emphasised the need for a national consensus over a “Charter of Economy” to solve the country’s financial problems.

In his speech, Bhutto criticised the “babus”, euphemism for the bureaucracy, for not knowing the ground realities of the country.

“Without political input, the budget will be by the babus, for the babus and of the babus. And we want to end this tradition,” said the PPP chairman.

The PPP, which is the main ally of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), continued to raise objections for not taking it into confidence regarding the federal budget.

The party initially boycotted the session on the economic budget, but both parties have since held several rounds of talks.

Bilawal further said, “A politician would never suggest taxing milk or stationary in a country with a 40 percent stunting rate and 26 million out-of-school children, but this would be a “babu’s” suggestion.”

The head of PPP also said the abolishment of anti-corruption body National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is necessary because “NAB and the economy cannot go together.”

Arsalan Naseer says a nepo baby hijacked his project with Ayeza Khan

In the Pakistani drama industry, celebrity children often get special treatment. Actor Arsalan Naseer, who debuted in the 2021 series ‘Chupke Chupke’, recently talked about his run-in with nepotism.

Naseer took to his Instagram Stories for a candid Q&A session with fans earlier this week. In his honest style, Naseer openly discussed how he, too, has been affected by the widespread issue of nepotism.

A fan eagerly wrote to Arsalan Naseer, “Please work with Ayeza Khan… That too with the main lead and a happy ending.” Sharing this fan’s comment on his Instagram Story, the actor revealed some behind-the-scenes drama.

“I was working with her, but they took an actor’s son instead and kicked me off the project. After a while, Ayeza left as well,” he stated. Naseer highlighted how the industry often favors star kids over talented actors, depriving fans of what could have been a great on-screen partnership.
