  • Mahira Khan’s marriage shows families just aren’t about father, mother, children: they can be different and happy

Mahira Khan’s marriage shows families just aren’t about father, mother, children: they can be different and happy

It was a picture of serenity, one that won the hearts of millions of Pakistan. A 38-year-old single mother looking stunning in a light outfit walked down the aisle, shedding tears of joy as she married the love of her life, Salim Karim. For the past three days, Mahira Khan’s wedding was all anyone could talk about, and one many women are expressing joy about. One user shared a picture of Mahira as a bride, alongside veteran celebrity couple Manzar Sehbai and Samina Ahmed (who both married at a later age) with the caption “Love and life are worth trying for”, which pretty much sums up why we are feeling so emotionally attached to the event. Not because it’s a celebrity who got married, but because she chose to marry on her own terms, and kept advocating throughout her career that families can be complex and unique.

Mahira Khan married during the beginning of her career, to Ali Askari, whom she called her “childhood sweetheart” in some interviews. This decision, she revealed during a session at Faiz International Festival, was something other people urged her not to follow, because it might harm her career.

“You’re just 21 years old!’ Mahira recalled Ghazanfar Ali telling her, when she was working as a VJ.

“Career, career, career, it didn’t make sense to me. I just wanted to get married,” said Mahira. She spoke about how she objected to the concept that a film heroine is not allowed to get married or have a baby, and has to, in a way, remain “an untouched girl” to the public, while the same isn’t expected from the man.

The couple got divorced in 2015, but Mahira maintained that it was not out of enmity, as the two continued to remain close friends even to this day. She maintains a cordial relationship with him to this day

“I think that Azlan’s father and their family and my family, we are on the same page, when it comes to Azlan,” the actress told Fuchsia in 2021. “I’m very close to them, even now, as I have grown up in their house. It takes work, it takes swallowing your pride at times, and it takes trying to understand the other person. And for your child’s sake, you do it. If you’re lucky that people from both sides are good and looking at the child’s well-being and true happiness, then you forget the bitterness.”

She also revealed recently to Frieha Altaf that their relationship wasn’t abusive, and the two continued to remain good friends to this day, while ensuring that Azlan remained their top-most priority.

Such words coming from a woman hold a lot of weight as she is currently one of Pakistan’s top-paid actresses, and also one who comes from a country where divorce is treated like a plague. A 2021 report said atleast 19,875 households in Pakistan were headed by single mothers, but the majority of our pop culture loathes divorcees and does it openly. Only this year, two of the most critically acclaimed dramas consisted of women forcefully married to a man their family chose.

Mahira’s marriage is a lighthouse moment, proving that families can comprises of two parents and a child, but can also include a step-parent, or even just a single mother. Her wedding wasn’t typical, a powerful reminder that you can settle when you want and choose how to celebrate your wedding. One picture that made the most rounds on social media and earned a lot of praise was when the actress walked down the aisle with her son.

Many users highlighted the beauty of this picture, an actress being given away by the son she raised on her own as a single mother, to the man she married for love. There’s nothing more beautiful than this moment, no matter how many celebrity weddings we watch in the future, watching Mahira gracefully embrace her ‘imperfect’ family, while encouraging other Pakistani women to do so, is the catharsis we all needed.

‘We didn’t want a haram relationship’: Hira Khan on why she, Arslan Khan married early

Celebrity couple Hira Khan and Arsalan Khan were guests on a recent episode of Express Entertainment’s ‘The Talk Talk Show’ with Hassan Choudary. During the conversation, Hira Khan opened up about the couple’s decision to get married early, even though the two had just began their careers, and didn’t wait to settle down before tying the knot.

“If you’re planning to do something as blissful as Nikkah, then there is no way it will prevent rizq from coming in your way. It’s not true that you will face hurdles in your work life,” Hira said.

“A lot of people told us ‘brands won’t pick you.’ ‘Your image would change because you would be a married couple, you would be out of that millennial category’”, recalled the ‘Guru’ actress. “But that never bothered us. We were doing this with the intention that we don’t want a haram relationship, even engagement for a long time. We just want to be religiously right, nothing bad will happen if your intentions are pure.”

Actor Arsalan Khan said it’s better that couples settle down early rather than later in life “If you’re going to get married later in life, then isn’t it better that you do it now? If you’re thinking no, I’ll do it later in life, that means your intentions are not right. Because you’re thinking if you find someone new you’ll ditch the woman and marry them.”

“I only wanted to create a stable life,” the ‘College Gate’ actor said. “I wanted to focus on my career, and I need to have someone back home whom I could talk with without worrying about whether this relationship is good, is it breaking?”

“We think we married quite late,” joked Hira. “We should have married even earlier.”

  • Mahira Khan walks down the aisle with her son and he is so grown up

Mahira Khan walks down the aisle with her son and he is so grown up

Mahira Khan’s wedding has been the talk of the town since Monday, when two short snippets from the event were shared online by the actor’s manager Anoushay Talha and her brother Hissan Khan. The actress later shared a longer video and photos of her marriage to long-term partner Salim Karim.

However, what is making Twitter users more emotional than the bride and groom is Mahira’s grown up son Azlan, shedding tears of happiness as he accompanied her down the aisle.

For many users, seeing a woman getting married again and that too accompanied by her son, whom she raised as a single mother, was a heartening thing to witness.

“ok but mahira and her son holding hands on her wedding day is making me feel a lot of good emotions. this is everything,” one user wrote.

Users shared clips from Mahira’s wedding where Azlan could be seen sitting next to the actress during the Nikkah, and no we’re not crying either, it’s the onions.

Some users shared a comparison picture of Mahira holding Azlan when he was a child, to the moment when he walked her down the aisle along with her brother. “Mahira’s son being all grown up, and walking her mom down the aisle, has to be one of the beautiful thing I saw today, such a precious moment omg”

Many users pointed out how this moment was poignant to witness because a divorced woman, something our society deeply loathes, established a successful career and raised her son, and then got married to the person she loves with her son walking her down the aisle? We want more women in Pakistan to get such a similar happy ending.

During an appearance at the ‘Fwhy podcast with Frieha Altaf’ Mahira shared how she married her childhood sweetheart Ali Askari, sharing how the two continued to remain close friends in order to raise their son Azlan, her main priority. She revealed the two had evolved into a modern family where respect for each other’s partners prevails.

Which Bollywood celebs congratulated Mahira on her wedding? The names might surprise you

  • Mahira weds and the biggest, saddest debate on social: who has more money – her husband or her?

Mahira weds and the biggest, saddest debate on social: who has more money – her husband or her?

Pakistan’s sweetheart Mahira Khan has officially married her long-term partner Salim Karim over the weekend. Short snippets we received of the ceremony showed it was an emotional moment for the bride and groom, who could be seen shedding tears as Mahira walked down the altar, looking mesmerising in ivory.

We’re incredibly happy for her, and we will keep championing women finding their happily ever after- but it seems like the Pakistani instinct to crush any woman in love remains ever present like some disease. Because we can’t fathom the idea that a woman could marry for love, right? Itna rata tou Pakistani dramas ko dekh kar lagwa liya hai.

A tweet has gained a lot of traction on X (formerly Twitter) where a user shared the unverified net worth of Mahira’s husband Salim- which totaled up to $1 million dollars, claiming that the actress got married for the sake of money rather than love.

“So in the end, its all about money. Larkooo!! Paise kamao ….” the user wrote.

Why would the biggest actress of Pakistan- who is also an ambassador for international brands like Lux- want to marry for money? Mahira doesn’t even star in most of the biggest projects currently airing in Pakistan, yet she makes international headlines because of a small snippet from her wedding. The math is not mathing here.

Why did we feel so necessary to write a long piece slamming this insensitive tweet, since we have lives as well? Because this isn’t just something Mahira alone has faced. Countless women in Pakistan are scrutinised for marrying of their own accord, or even being happy in their marriages because on a regular basis they are met with gossip mongers’ who assume these women married for money. But these women and Mahira are not being targetted because of money- it’s because our ghulami mindset mulk can’t imagine a woman being this happy on her wedding day and being in love with a man. It doesn’t sit right with Pakistanis that a woman is miserable since she has been bound for life to another man, and Mahira isn’t.

Mahira Khan is a woman who is completely self-made, did not rely on any man to build up her career, and then went on to travel the entire world on her own while being a single mother. A woman living her life on her own terms, choosing to get married in her forties and doing so while having been married previously and also having a son? Not something easy to swallow for a Pakistani man.

Our mard hazarat can’t settle on the prospect that any woman can be financially secure and choose who she wants to marry, since our cultural upbringing teaches us it is men who can be the sole providers and women must depend on them for survival so therefore, marriage is done purely on the basis of financial security, not for love or comfort. But here is a woman marrying someone she was in a relationship with for a while, and shattering this stereotype while looking phenomenal on her wedding. Clearly the knee-jerk reaction is to assume Mahira is a gold digger, right?

Have social media users learned about the concept of leaving other people’s private business alone? It is not Mahira’s job to justify to you why she chose to get married, and it clearly is no one’s business to make assumptions about such a thing. Rather than fixating on whether an actress had any ulterior motives behind marrying, focus this much energy on your own life because trust us- by the end of the day Mahira will keep outshining her haters and so will every other woman who laughed away on her wedding.

No woman owes any one explanations about her personal life, and we hope Mahira keeps on living rent-free in the minds of haters.

  • Three reasons why we’re excited to watch upcoming film ‘Gunjal’

Three reasons why we’re excited to watch upcoming film ‘Gunjal’

Social media was set ablaze yesterday when the official trailer for the upcoming film ‘Gunjal’ released on all platforms, promising to take users on a thrilling journey about one of the darkest cases in Pakistan. We are incredibly happy to witness the Pakistani industry shift its filmmaking approach and step into more complex social issues. Here are some reasons why we’re super excited to watch ‘Gunjal’:

1 It explores the investigation of the murder of prominent children right’s activist Iqbal Masih

For most of our audience members who don’t know Iqbal Masih, he was a vocal critic of abusive child labour in Pakistan, a state he escaped at the age of 10. Because of his protests, Iqbal was able to free more than 3000 children from forced slavery. He visited countries like the US and Sweden where he advocated for an end to bonded labour. However, Iqbal was tragically shot by unknown culprits at the age of 12. But his efforts to eradicate bonded labour didn’t go unnoticed as he posthumously received  World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child in 2000, and later the Sitara-e-Shujaat in 2022 from President Arif Alvi.

2 The cast list includes thespians like Resham and Ahmed Ali Akbar

After the success of dramas like ‘Gunah’ and ‘Churails’, as well as Sarmad Khoosat’s ‘Zindagi Tamasha’, it’s clear that Pakistanis want something else other than saas-bahu content. A film like ‘Gunjal’ will ignite the audience’s curiosity and encourage more to watch the film in theatres, because this is a clear opportunity to bring more diverse stories back on our screens.

3 We need more crime thrillers in Pakistan

After the success of dramas like ‘Gunah’ and ‘Churails’, as well as Sarmad Khoosat’s ‘Zindagi Tamasha’ it’s clear that Pakistanis want something else other than saas-bahu content. Clearly, a film like ‘Gunjal’ will ignite the audience’s curiosity and encourage more to watch the film in theatres, because this is a clear opportunity to bring more diverse stories back on our screens.

Gunjal is directed by Shoaib Sultan and written by Nirmal Bano and Ali Kazmi, and its set to release in theatres across Pakistan on December 8.
