France bids farewell to screen legend Alain Delon

As tributes for film legend Alain Delon poured in from around the globe following his death at 88, France was preparing on Monday its farewell to one of its greatest stars.

No national tribute has been planned, as Delon had made it clear he did not want one. He said he wanted to be buried near his dogs on his property in Douchy in central France where he died.He had already started sounding out the local authorities there, Christophe Hurault, the sub-prefect of Loiret, told AFP. The prefecture “had given its agreement in principle”.His three children, Anthony, Anouchka and Alain-Fabien, having squabbled bitterly for months over his medical treatment, spoke in a unified voice Sunday when they announced their father’s death. Now they have to manage the funeral of the screen icon, deciding whether to limit it to close family or extend it to the cinema world.Delon, naturally, dominated the front pages of France’s newspapers Monday, many of them featuring full-page portraits of the actor in his prime.”The Last Samurai”, wrote Le Figaro for its front-page headline, a reference to one of his most famous roles, as the enigmatic assassin in Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 thriller “Le Samourai”.

    – End of an era –

Delon’s performances in some of the greatest films of the 1960s and 70s were widely praised, his charisma on screen impossible to ignore. He was one of the last living legends of a golden era for French cinema in the 1960s.Fellow 60s star Brigitte Bardot, 89, told AFP Delon “leaves a huge void that nothing, nobody, can fill”.French President Emmanuel Macron called him a “French monument” who “played legendary roles and made the world dream”.His death was covered by newspapers around the world, with the New York Times, Washington Post and New York Post all publishing lengthy obituaries. The Washington Post described him as the “angel-faced tough guy of international cinema”, while The Hollywood Reporter said he was the “seductive star of European cinema”.”Mesmeric and beautiful, Alain Delon was one of cinema’s most mysterious stars,” The Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw wrote.Germany’s Spiegel called him “Europe’s James Dean”, while Sueddeutsche Zeitung said the “aura of the handsome angel of death made him a legend”.Italy, where he spent much of his career, also gave extensive coverage to his passing. “There will never be another actor like Delon, unique and immortal”, wrote Il Corriere della Sera.La Stampa and La Repubblica bid “adieu to the legend of French cinema”.”For me, he was a legend,” 26-year-old moviegoer Victor Roussel told AFP before a showing of his 1963 film “The Leopard” at a Paris cinema Sunday.”Alain Delon really represents French cinema with a capital ‘C’”.

    – Controversial views –

While he had legions of fans around the world, his personal life and political opinions divided opinion.Delon’s relationship with women caused controversy. His sons accused him of domestic violence, which Delon denied while admitting slapping women during quarrels.Delon also drew criticism for supporting Jean-Marie Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front, who was in favour of the death penalty and spoke against same-sex relationships.Feminists were also appalled by the lifetime achievement award the Cannes Film Festival gave him in 2019.He lived his later years largely as a recluse, though his personal life kept him in the headlines. In 2023, his three children filed a complaint against his live-in assistant Hiromi Rollin, accusing her of harassment and threatening behaviour. The siblings went on to wage a public battle in the media and the courts, arguing over his health, which worsened after a stroke in 2019.Delon lived out his final years in the small village of Douchy, surrounded by high walls, where he planned to be buried not far from his dogs.Outside the entrance to his home, dozens of fans placed flowers to pay their respects.”In our minds we believe that these icons are eternal,” said Marie Arnold, laying white flowers with her sister Michele.”It’s a part of our youth that is gone, it’s very sad.”

Exclusive: Sharmila Faruqi meets the Ambanis

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani was recently spotted with politician Sharmila Faruqui at Disneyland Paris.
Asia and India’s richest man, Ambani is currently in the French capital with his family, including wife Nita Ambani and daughter Isha Ambani. The Ambanis are expected to attend events of the upcoming Paris Olympics.

There was a special moment when Mukesh Ambani introduced his little granddaughter to Sharmila and her family. These unexpected encounters left a lasting impression, showcasing the Ambani family’s hospitality and friendliness.

While talking to The Current, Sharmila said, “Well, [they are] very cool and friendly, especially Mukesh Ambani, who chatted up with us when he got to know we are from Pakistan and in politics. Isha was super sweet. Kept bumping into them in Paris and Disney Land. Also, he proudly introduced his little granddaughter to us.”

  • What we know about the Paris Olympics opening ceremony

What we know about the Paris Olympics opening ceremony

Organisers of Friday’s opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics — the first time it will be held outside a stadium — have provided teasers for their spectacular plans but refused to give specifics.

Here is what we know about the concept, the artists and music based on public statements over the last few months and press leaks:

    – What’s the concept? –

Instead of using the main athletics stadium for the opening parade, as is customary, organisers have moved the event outside and into the heart of the capital — in keeping with their motto “Games Wide Open”.

Around 6,000-7,000 athletes are set to sail down a six-kilometre (four-mile) stretch of the river Seine from the Austerlitz bridge in the east to the Eiffel Tower, on 85 barges and boats.

Up to 500,000 people are set to watch in person from specially built stands, where tickets have sold for up to 2,700 euros ($2,900), on the river banks for free and from the overlooking balconies and apartments.

“Organising a ceremony on the Seine is not easier than doing it in a stadium… but it has more punch,” chief organiser Tony Estanguet told AFP earlier this month.

Because of the size and complexity of the parade, it has never been rehearsed in full.

    – What about the entertainment? –

The show has been designed by prodigious theatre director Thomas Jolly, a 42-year-old known for hit rock-opera musical “Starmania”.

He brought on board a creative team that includes the writer of French TV series “Call My Agent”, Fanny Herrero, as well as best-selling author Leila Slimani and renowned historian Patrick Boucheron.

The show has been split into 12 different sections, with around 3,000 dancers, singers and entertainers positioned on both banks of the river, the bridges and nearby monuments.

A tribute to Notre-Dame cathedral, in the process of being renovated after a devastating fire in 2019, is guaranteed, possibly with dancers on its scaffolding.

Starting at 07:30pm (1730 GMT), two thirds of the ceremony will take place in daylight, then dusk — Jolly is hoping for one of Paris’s stunning summer sunsets — and will end with a light show.

The music will be a mix of classical, traditional ‘chanson francaise’, as well as rap and electro.

Franco-Malian R&B star Aya Nakamura is widely tipped to perform despite criticism from far-right politicians, including Marine Le Pen who suggested an appearance by her would “humiliate” France.

French electro superstars Daft Punk said they had turned down an invitation to play, while globe-trotting French DJ David Guetta has been overlooked — much to his irritation.

    – What’s the message? –

Asked to sum up his message last week, Jolly said it was “love.”

Despite the risk of irking conservatives, he said his work would be a celebration of cultural, linguistic, religious and sexual diversity in France and around the world.

“I think the people who want to live together in this diversity, this otherness, are much more numerous, but we make less noise,” he told AFP.

It is fair to assume it will be nothing like the widely panned retro-styled opening ceremony of last year’s rugby World Cup, which featured a succession of French cliches from baguettes to berets and the Eiffel Tower.

Jolly’s team is also wary of over-emphasising France’s historic contribution to the development of democracy and the concept of universal human rights thanks to its Enlightenment philosophers and 1789 Revolution.

“We wanted to avoid our natural tendency to lecture people,” Herrero told Le Monde newspaper recently.

And don’t expect a three-hour tribute to French greatness to rival the nationalistic pageantry seen at the Beijing Games in 2008.

“The opening ceremony in Beijing in 2008 was exactly what we did not want to do,” Boucheron told Le Monde.

    – What will be the big moments? –

With so much still under wraps, it’s hard to predict.

A performance by Aya Nakamura, after so much controversy about her role, would be a major moment so soon after parliamentary elections that saw the anti-immigration far-right gain a historic 143 seats in the national parliament.

Jolly has strongly hinted that a submersible or submarine could emerge from the waters of the Seine at some point.

“You have the sky, you have bridges, you have water, you have banks, you have so much space to make poetry,” Jolly told reporters last week. “So why not under the river also?”

The biggest moment of all might simply be the end if everyone gets home safely.

The ceremony has given French police cold sweats ever since it was unveiled in 2021 because of the difficulty of securing so many people over such a vast urban area.

Around 45,000 members of the security forces will be on duty.

Milk prices in Karachi higher than cities in France, Netherlands, Australia

Milk has become more expensive in Pakistan as compared to many countries of the world, Bloomberg has reported.

According to the report, the price of boxed milk in Pakistan is 370 rupees per liter, while the same milk is available in Paris, the capital of France, for 342 rupees per liter. The price of milk in the Netherlands has also been declared cheaper than Pakistan.

The report states that milk is available at Rs 358 per litre in Amsterdam and in Australia for Rs 300 per litre, while the price of canned milk in Pakistan is Rs.370.

“Ultra-high temperature, or UHT, milk now costs 370 rupees ($1.33) a litre in supermarkets in Karachi. That compares with $1.29 in Amsterdam, $1.23 in Paris, and $1.08 in Melbourne, according to data collected by Bloomberg.” the report highlights.

Bloomberg says that more than 60 percent of children in Pakistan are suffering from anaemia and increasing the price of milk is akin to putting the lives of sick children at stake.

French boys charged with rape of 12-year-old girl

French authorities said they have charged two teenagers with the gang rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl in a Paris suburb in an attack suspected to have been motivated by anti-Semitism.

The violence has sent shockwaves through the Jewish community and added to tensions in the run-up to a snap election that could bring the far-right National Rally to power for the first time.

The girl told police she was approached by three boys aged between 12 and 13 while she was in a park near her home with a friend and dragged into a shed on Saturday evening in the northwestern suburb of Courbevoie.

The suspects beat her and “forced her to have anal and vaginal penetration, fellatio, while uttering death threats and anti-Semitic remarks,” a police source told AFP.

Her friend managed to identify two of the attackers.

The three boys were arrested on Monday.

On Tuesday evening, two of them both aged 13 were charged with gang rape, anti-Semitic insults and violence and issuing death threats. The pair were taken into custody.

The third boy, 12, was also charged with anti-Semitic insults and violence and issuing death threats, but not with rape. He was allowed return home after being charged.

  • PIA to resume direct flights to Paris in June

PIA to resume direct flights to Paris in June

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is set to resume its flight operations to Paris in June, marking a significant step forward for the national carrier.

In an address to a delegation from the Council of Economic and Energy Journalists in Islamabad, PIA Chairman Abdullah Hafiz unveiled the anticipated receipt of safety approval from the International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) in the imminent future.

“With the imminent clearance from IASA, we are poised to launch flights to Paris by June, followed by the reinstatement of direct flights from Pakistan to Britain’s Heathrow Airport on August 14,” stated Hafiz with assurance.

In anticipation of these pivotal routes, PIA has intensified its efforts in the maintenance and overhaul of its Boeing 777 aircraft fleet.

Presently, seven Boeing 777 aircraft are operational, with an additional two expected to join the fleet within the next two months.

This expansion will equip PIA with a total of nine Boeing 777 planes, facilitating efficient flight operations to both Europe and Britain.

Highlighting Pakistan’s global aviation connectivity, Chairman Hafiz underscored that the country boasts air service agreements with 97 nations worldwide.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had imposed a flight ban on PIA following a tragic plane crash in Karachi in May 2020, which claimed 97 lives.

Subsequent investigations uncovered discrepancies in the licensing procedures for commercial pilots.

It is noteworthy that in November 2023, a delegation from EASA conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and PIA, assessing various aspects such as licensing, flight safety, flight standards, and airworthiness.
