French couple sentenced for keeping 159 cats, seven dogs

A French couple has been given a one-year suspended sentence for keeping dozens of animals in closed spaces in a case pertaining to animal cruelty.

The couple occupied an 80 square meter (861 square foot) apartment with 159 cats and seven dogs, as per BBC.

The judge ruled that the couple had not given the animals proper care. The investigation found animals living in filth, many of them malnourished, dehydrated, or parasite-infected.

The owners are a 68-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man, both of whom were banned from owning pets. They were ordered to pay more than €150,000 (£128,000) to animal rights’ charities and civil parties.

When police broke up a fight at the couple’s apartment last year, they found each room contained numerous animals.

Authorities also reported animal waste everywhere in the apartment.

Due to their poor health, some dogs and cats later passed away. In a washroom, investigators discovered the bodies of two dogs and at least two cats.

The apartment’s owner testified in court that although the animals were “the love of her life,” she had “screwed up.”

It appears that in 2018, she moved in with her parents’ three dogs and three cats before bringing about thirty cats from an abandoned building to her apartment. After that, the animals procreated.

The woman claimed that she would have felt like an “abandoned person for abandoning [the animals].”

This condition is called Noah’s syndrome. It is a psychological need to save animals even when one is unable to do so, according to a psychiatric evaluation.

An 18-month prison sentence was what the prosecution had asked for.

In 2014, the couple was already under investigation for residing in an 18-square-meter studio with a dog and thirteen cats.

  • In the face of indescribable cruelty, Palestinians continue displaying love for animals

In the face of indescribable cruelty, Palestinians continue displaying love for animals

Despite hardship and violence, Palestinians keep proving their hearts are as big as the sea. As videos go viral of displaced civilians forced to leave behind their homes and belongings during the Israeli airstrikes, one thing remains consistent: the Palestinians will never leave behind their pets.

Several videos show Palestinians living in refugee camps and surviving with meagre rations, but still doing everything to provide for the cats and dogs being left behind. An animal rescuer by the name of Salula Animal Rescue has been going viral on Twitter, with the platform applauding him for providing shelter and food to the cats whose owners did not survive or who got lost.

In several videos, he can be seen housing injured animals found under the rubble of bombed homes.

In many other videos, Gazan children can be seen cuddling their cats as they take them along to escape the bombing by Israeli airstrikes.

A man from Gaza went viral when he was seen taking his cat along with him to escape Northern Gaza.

At a time when many experts have compared what is happening in Gaza to hell, Palestinians keep on proving they have bravery and resilience in spades.

  • Moments when we miss Imran Khan

Moments when we miss Imran Khan

Today is Imran Khan’s 71st birthday and as much as PTI followers are missing his birthday celebrations, we miss him the most when we are cutting birthday cake, waiting to eat it all by ourselves.

Of course, he is the one who we miss today as ICC World Cup is starting. Many are drawing parallels with 1992 when Pakistan Won the World Cup under Imran’s captaincy.

All pet lovers know that Khan is indeed a pet lover and he used to spend a significant time with his dogs.

For me, another cute memory is him having a fun time with Pervez Khattak in a chair lift.

For all the right reasons, we can’t forget his romantic and protective side for his wife, Bushra Bibi.

Nothing can be said about Imran Khan without mentioning Jemima, his first wife. For a few years, they did give a lot of young couples a happy ideal marriage to emulate.

  • Cops in KP to be called ‘Sheru’, which is also the name of PM Imran’s dog

Cops in KP to be called ‘Sheru’, which is also the name of PM Imran’s dog

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Bahramand Tangi has objected to the provincial authorities’ decision to not call personnel of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police by informal names, highlighting that one of the names approved for the cops is that of Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s pet dog.

According to media reports and a written order issued by KP Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Headquarters, a copy of which is available with The Current, no informal names such as “mama ji”“khan ji” and “pehlwana” will be used for the police, which “undermine the sacrifices rendered by the force”.

Instead, the personnel will only be addressed by their own names or by approved nicknames that are “jawaan“, “sheru” and “sahib“.

With the order making headlines, it drew a strong reaction from the PPP leader who said that “Sheru [tiger]” was the name of one of PM Imran’s dogs.

“This is unethical,” he said in a statement, adding that the personnel of KP police weren’t employees of Bani Gala.

    IMRAN & HIS SHERU:

The premier has had a total of five pet dogs, all of which have been a focus of interest in several media reports.

In 2011, former military ruler General (r) Pervez Musharraf gifted a puppy to Imran before the former’s self-imposed exile. The puppy was born at Musharraf’s farmhouse, and according to the premier’s former wife Reham Khan, his name was Sheru, who was an Alsatian.

In September 2014, Imran in a television talk show revealed that Sheru had died three months earlier. However, in April 2018, reports and social media rumours emerged that he had removed Sheru from his Bani Gala residence on the advice of his third and current wife Bushra Bibi.

According to local media, a new quarter was then built for the dog outside the main residence building, as his wife was not comfortable with pet animals inside the house.

However, the premier, during a press conference had later denied the media reports, saying that Sheru died three to four years ago.

  • Fitbit launches tracker for your cat

Fitness trackers give you a way to find out patterns like how many steps you walk, how many calories you consume and how many hours you sleep. This type of information is important for your health.

PurrSong Pendant is a fitness tracker for cats. The idea of a cat fitness tracker might sound weird but it is very useful for pet owners. It tracks your cat’s activities and sleeping pattern. The idea is to get data about your pet’s normal routine and keep track of those time when they deviate from it.

When your furry friend starts to stray from the routine, it could be an indicator that there’s something wrong.

As anyone who has ever owned a cat will know that it can be tricky to find out if they are sick, especially cats try to hide when they are sick.

The pendant identifies an irregular pattern early so that you can seek veterinary care sooner.

The information from the tracker is shared over Bluetooth with an app on your phone that can alert you when there’s an abnormal pattern. For examples, if your cat isn’t being active as usual, you’ll be notified about that.

The PurrSong pendant is roughly the size of mentos candy, with IP56 (strongest) rating for water and dust resistance. It attaches to your cat’s collar and will last one month on a single charge.

The data from the PurrSong Pendant can give you a snapshot of your cat’s overall health — this reason is enough for a pet lover to go a buy one for your cat.
