Imports of mobile phones have recorded a significant year-on-year increase in the first eight months of the current financial year.
According to statistics released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, during the period from July to February 2024, 1.148 billion dollars was spent on the imports of mobile phones, which is 156 per cent more than the 448 million dollars of the same period of the previous financial year.

A recent survey conducted by WhistleOut, a consumer-focused website, has revealed that one in 10 people cannot remember their own phone numbers.
The study reported that about 80 per cent of survey respondents had only a handful of phone numbers that they had memorised.
The research revealed that one in 10 people could not remember their own phone numbers, 16 per cent do not have their parents’ numbers memorised and 17 per cent do not have their partner’s number memorised. Only 49 per cent have memorised between two to five numbers.
The reliance on mobile devices keeps people from retaining important information. A 2020 Panda Security survey termed it as “Digital Amnesia”, the effects of technology dependence that leads to an inability to remember things.
A previous study said that six in 10 people simply “couldn’t cope” without their cell phones for more than a day and one in eight suffer anxiety when their phone battery is low.

European Union (EU) police agency, Europol, has arrested at least 746 criminals after decrypting a phone network of 60,000 organised criminals, including murderers, cartels, hitmen, assassins and money launders.
French police first hacked the network of EncroChat by deploying a “technical device” to penetrate so that they could read millions of messages “over the shoulders” of suspects as they communicated with custom-made devices.
“This is an unprecedented look into the heart of organised crime groups that led us to foil violent attacks, corruption, attempted murders and large-scale drug transports,” said Wil Van Gemert, deputy director of Europol, during a press conference in The Hague.
According to Van Den Berg, chief constable of the Dutch police’s central unit, some of the encrypted messages were so worrying that it went “far beyond the authorities’ imagination”.
In 2017, French authorities launched an investigation after finding that EncroChat phones were regularly found in operations of criminal groups and the company was operating from servers in France.
EncroChat sells customised Android handsets with GPS, camera and microphone functionalities removed. These devices are loaded with encrypted messaging apps as well as a secured secondary operating system, in addition to Android.
The phones also come with a self-destruct feature that wipes the devices after a PIN code is entered.
EncroChat had in June sent a message to its estimated 60,000 users to throw away their 1,000 euro devices as its servers had been “seized illegally by government entities”. The company has also been shut down.
EncroChat had customers in 140 countries globally. More than 90 per cent of EncroChat clients were linked to organised crime as between 50,000 to 60,000 of the phones were being used by hardened criminals.
The Dutch police have busted 19 crystal meth labs, seized 10 tonnes of cocaine and thousands of kilos of crystal meth, said Andy Kraagm, head of Dutch police’s central investigation division at the press conference.
After this massive operation, some users are throwing away their phones; some have gone offline completely while others are attempting to flee their countries.

Internal features and Storage
The smartphone is powered by Snapdragon 855+ with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. However, it does not have any storage expansion options. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip runs on One UI 2.1 based Android 10 OS.
Cameras
At the back, the smartphone features a dual-sensor rear camera with 12 MP regular wide sensor and a 12 MP ultra-wide sensor. On the front, it is equipped with 10 MP single sensor for selfies.

It is equipped with two batteries that, when combined, total 3300 mAh. The smartphone surprisingly also supports wireless charging.
Coronavirus outbreak in China could start to disrupt India’s production of smartphones. This spread can delay component shipments that are important for the production of smartphones, reports have said.
India is the world’s biggest smartphone maker after China but is still largely dependent on China for supplies of parts such as cells, displays panels, camera modules and printed circuit boards.
“Those disruptions were already planned but if it gets prolonged, for March and April, production will have serious trouble,” said S N Rai, the co-founder of homegrown smartphone maker Lava.
China’s OnePlus said its Indian operations could manage, in the short term at least.
“We are well covered because we have the entire production in India, we already have enough stock, and even going forward many of the components will anyway be coming directly from other markets,” said Vikas Agarwal, the India head of OnePlus.
However, Beijing has expressed confidence in uprooting the “devil” virus that has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Giants like Alphabet Inc’s Google and Sweden’s IKEA have closed operations in China.
India’s Tata Motors, which counts China as a major market for its luxury Jaguar Land Rover cars, said on Thursday it was worried about the coronavirus and warned that the outbreak could impact productions and profits.
For now, the industry just hopes the outbreak can be contained within the next two weeks. “If the problem persists beyond February 10, we have a real problem at hand,” said Pankaj Mohindroo, head of the India Cellular & Electronics Association, an industry lobby group.
