Twitter calls out PML-N’s Hina Butt for blaming the victims

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Hina Pervaiz Butt took to Twitter to comment on the Usman Mirza case. She ended up blaming the victims instead in a now-deleted tweet. In a harrowing video that went viral on social media, Mirza was seen torturing, harassing, and assaulting a young couple in Islamabad along with his accomplices.

Hina Butt tweeted, “Why do young people go out and become victims of people like Usman Mirza?” She added that we also need to educate our children on why they become targets when they go out.

Twitterati reacted to Butt’s tweet and called her out for blaming the victim.

Natasha Kundi, a writer wrote, “According to her [Hina] young people go out and deliberately become victims …. so basically young people shouldn’t go out!”

Lawyer Reema Omer said Butt’s take was no different from CCPO Lahore’s comments. She tweeted, “Why can’t we focus on criminal acts of the perpetrators instead of lecturing victims?”

Singer and UNODC Goodwill Ambassador, Shehzad Roy, tweeted, “It is true that the oppressor should be severely punished, but it is very inappropriate to criticise the oppressed.” Roy further said that it is akin to blaming victims of a robbery by saying that the locks were not strong enough so it is their fault.

A Twitter user showing his disapproval with PML-N’s leader’s statement compared her stance with CCPO Lahore Umar Sheikh’s comments in the Motorway rape case where he had blamed the victim.

Journalist Zeb Aslam tweeted, “There is next-to-no difference between this and IK’s statement linking “modesty” and rape…a point that I hope both PMLN and PTI supporters can appreciate before leaping to defend their chosen leader.”

After the backlash, Hina Butt deleted her tweet.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday said she believed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has recognised Israel as “it is not presenting a denial” to reports and statements emphasising Pakistan’s reported acceptance of Israel.

Maryam stressed the government should inform the nation of its decision on Israel. “It’s not your personal decision, it’s something that is linked to 220 million people of Pakistan.”

Commenting on the Afghanistan situation, the PML-N leader asked the government to bring its own house in order first.

“Your foreign policy should not alter in view of a changing political landscape. It should not be based on your political standing,” said Maryam, calling for a unified stance on issues.

Responding to a question on whether the PML-N had entered a deal with the government, Maryam said, “Why do you people call everything a deal. This is an inappropriate question. Why will there be any deal? Are we mad to have a deal with those we are [fighting] against?” she questioned.

Maryam further added, “PML-N is in the strongest position in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and if free and fair polls are held, then our party will win the election with an overwhelming majority.” She added that people had lost trust in the present system in view of “obvious rigging in the past elections”.

The PML-N vice-president said the current approach of the government would take Balochistan further away. “I believe grievances of people of the province should be addressed,” she remarked.

When asked for her point of view on Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s statement that Shehbaz Sharif should generally refrain from making emotional remarks in public and that his [Shehbaz Sharif’s] statement was taken out of context, Maryam replied that she agrees with Khaqan that Shehbaz’s statement was taken out of context.

We knew what were the weaknesses of all parties and what was their due share in the Senate seats. So on the basis of it, Tariq Bashir Cheema, Moonis Elahi, and I worked on it and thankfully we achieved the goal of holding an unopposed election in Punjab,” added Elahi.

Criticising Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s recent comments on women’s clothing and rape, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday said that linking women’s clothing to rape reflects the criminal mindset of the PM, adding that his words would only encourage the perpetrators.

She further questioned if the young children who were sexually abused were also molested due to their clothes.

“[He is] a person who validates rape and holds the victim responsible. Pakistan needs to be rid of this mindset of rape apologists,” she said. The PML-N leader went on to question whether Zainab’s rape and the motorway incident were a consequence of what the victims were wearing.

Maryam said the prime minister “should be ashamed over such a statement”. She added that through his remarks in the interview, the PM had “insulted rape victims”.

‘Maryam Nawaz group wishes for chaos to ensue’: Shafqat Mahmood

Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood on Wednesday blamed the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for the ruckus in the National Assembly.

Speaking on Geo News’ programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath’, Mahmood said there is a group within the PML-N that is “perhaps aligned with Maryam Nawaz Sahiba that wishes for chaos to ensue”.

He claimed that when Minister for Finance Shaukat Tarin was presenting the budget in parliament, the Opposition came close to the prime minister and said words like ‘Donkey Raja’.

Mahmood said that the Opposition itself asked for a committee to be formed to investigate the ongoing ruckus but when they were asked by the Speaker to turn in their members’ names, “they refused to do so”.

“Then, when Shehbaz Sharif’s speech began, a member of the PML-N threw a bottle in MNA Akram Cheema’s direction and he was wounded. He was left all bloodied.”

Speaking of the Opposition’s decision to bring a no-confidence motion, Mahmood said that they will soon “run away from the move”.

Meanwhile, PML-N’s Rana Sanaullah said that both Speaker and Deputy Speaker are custodians of the House. It is very important that both the treasury benches and the Opposition need to have confidence in them.

Sanaullah said that no-confidence motion against both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker signals a trust deficit. “They have lost the confidence of the parliament.”

He also accused the prime minister of “conspiring to diminish respect for the parliament”.

No-confidence motion to be moved against NA Speaker Asad Qaiser

The Opposition has decided to jointly move a no-confidence motion against National Assembly (NA) Speaker Asad Qaiser, after two days of ruckus in the National Assembly.

The decision of tabling a no-confidence motion against Qaiser was reached when Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto met in the NA earlier today to discuss the way forward after yesterday’s session.

In this regard, the joint Opposition leaders also agreed to form a committee that would be tasked with tabling the motion. However, the names of its members are under consideration.

The Opposition members said that Tuesday’s session was the darkest day in the history of democracy, with the Speaker failing to fulfil his constitutional, legal, democratic, and parliamentary responsibilities.

“Asad Qaiser is not qualified to fulfill this duty,” said one of the Opposition members.

The Opposition demanded that a parliamentary committee be established with equal representation from treasury and Opposition benches to probe the ruckus that had transpired in parliament.

The National Assembly on Tuesday was complete mayhem as Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif addressed the lower house.

Moments after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president started speaking, he was greeted with loud slogans and whistles from the treasury benches.

Shehbaz continued his speech and questioned, “Imran Khan Niazi promised 10 million jobs. Where are those jobs?”

“Where are the $300bn that was supposed to be brought back to the country from abroad?”

Sharif said that PM Imran Khan’s claims of eliminating corruption from Pakistan were hollow.

He criticised the budget, saying that it had failed to provide relief to the masses amid spiraling unemployment and inflation.

Speaker Asad Qaiser kept interjecting, requesting lawmakers on the treasury benches to refrain from shouting while the Leader of the Opposition spoke.

Amidst the chaos, members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government were seen hurling books at the Opposition and vice versa.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Ali Nawaz Awan can be seen in one video clip responding to abusive language by a PML-N lawmaker with expletives.

A woman lawmaker tried to pull the PTI MNA away from the group of legislators who were shoving each other. He can be seen in the video throwing a booklet at the PML-N leader and shouting angrily at him.
