    President Pakistan Olympic Association Lieutenant General (R) Arif Hasan resigned

    Pakistan Olympic Association (PAO) President Lieutenant General (retired) Arif Hasan resigned from his post after 19 years.

    Lt Gen Retd Arif Hasan wrote in a letter to the Executive Committee of the Pakistan Olympics Association members that he is resigning as President of POA on January 1, 2024.

    He further wrote that the decision was not easy but due to ill health, he needed help to continue the responsibility of heading such an important organization.

    Arif Hasan is currently living in America where he confirmed his resignation when contacted by Geo News, while Secretary POA Khalid Mahmood has also confirmed Arif Hasan’s resignation.

    Arif Hassan was appointed as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the South Asian Games in 2002, after which he remained active in Pakistan Sports, in 2004 he became the first President of the Pakistan Olympic Association and was then elected for four consecutive terms.

    After the resignation of Arif Hasan, the executive committee of the POA will temporarily decide on the acting president until the next elections.

    Balochistan wins first gold medal in national games

    The 34th edition of National Games 2023 is being hosted by Quetta after a gap of 19 years. The tournament iss scheduled to take place from May 22 to May 30.

    Balochistan have won the first gold medal in the ongoing National Games organized by Pakistan Olympic Association, picking up gold in Martial Arts (karate). Taj Rehan won the medal in below 75 kilogram category.

    WAPDA’s Waheed Ahmed won gold in men’s over 84, Mohammad Owais won gold in under 84, Saifullah of Army won gold in one on one while Army also won gold in team kata.

    In the women’s under-68 category, Army’s Arzoo won the gold medal while WAPDA’s Shahida bagged the gold medal in individual kata, while team kata was won by Army.

    Army’s Sana Kausar won the golden medal in women’s over 61 kg karate.

    So far, Army has won 5 gold medals, WAPDA three and Balochistan one gold medal in karate.

  • ‘Don’t use supplements’, Pakistan Olympic Association warns athletes

    The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) has issued a warning to athletes against using sports supplements following Talha Talib’s positive doping test case, reports Samaa.

    Secretary POA Medical Commission, Dr Asad Abbas warned that such supplements could deteriorate the health of athletes, saying that consumption of these performance-enhancing supplements could lead to the death of athletes.

    Dr Abbas said: “Athletes should not use unfair means to win competitions as it could lead to a four-year ban. Performance-enhancing drugs are dangerous for a player’s health and could lead to death.”

    He also revealed that the Talha Talib case is not yet reached the Pakistan Olympic Association. Awareness against doping in Pakistan has also been started ahead of Common Wealth Games this year. He also warned to stay away from prohibited activities as it could defame the country.

    “Athletes in Pakistan should be careful about doping because such incidents bring the country’s name into disrepute while also ending their careers,” he concluded.
