TLP worker arrested in India, allegedly plotting to murder BJP’s Nupur Sharma: Indian media

A 24-year-old Pakistani man was detained near the India-Pakistan international border in Rajasthan.

As per media reports, he was allegedly planning to kill Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Nupur Sharma who made derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in June.

According to Indian media reports, the man is influenced by Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).

The accused, identified as Rizwan Ashraf, son of Mohammad Ashraf is a resident of Mandi Bahauddin. He had sneaked into India from Hindumalkot international border. He was arrested on the intervening night of July 16-17.

“In the preliminary interrogation, he revealed his plan to kill BJP leader Nupur Sharma. He seems to be religiously motivated. He was produced before a court from where he was sent into police custody for five days,” said Superintendent of Police (SP), Anand Sharm.

His connections, according to the SP, are also being questioned.

Rizwan is the same man who in August 2021 vandalised Ranjit Singh’s statue, reports Roohan Ahmed for Urdu News. He was later released on bail.

As per Rizwan’s father, his son left home before Eid-ul-Azha. His father said that he told his mother that he is going somewhere but did not tell his family where he is going.

Indian authorities have not contacted Pakistani authorities in this regard.

According to a TLP leader, Rizwan is only a worker of the party.

Twitter sues Indian government over content removal directives

Twitter has sued the Indian government to challenge some of its takedown orders, a source familiar with the matter revealed, further escalating the tension between the American social giant and India.

In its lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Karnataka High Court, Twitter alleges that New Delhi has abused its power by ordering it to remove several tweets from its platform.

The lawsuit follows a rough year and a half for Twitter in India, a key overseas market for the firm, where it has been asked to take down hundreds of accounts and tweets, many of which critics argue were objected because they denounced the Indian government’s policies and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Twitter partially complied with the requests but sought to fight back against many challenges. Under India’s new IT rules, which went into effect last year, Twitter has little to no room left to individually challenge the takedown orders.

The tension between the two was apparent on May 24 last year, when Delhi police, controlled by India’s central government, visited two offices of Twitter — in the national capital state of Delhi and Gurgaon, in the neighboring state of Haryana — to seek more information about Twitter’s rationale to label one of the tweets by ruling partly BJP spokesperson as “manipulated media.”

Delhi police said it had received a complaint about the classification of the spokesperson’s tweet and visited the offices to serve Twitter India’s head a notice of the inquiry. In a statement, the police said Twitter India’s managing director’s replies on the subject had been “very ambiguous.”

Twitter at the time described the episode as “intimidation.”

The company has “concerns with regards to the use of intimidation tactics by the police in response to enforcement of our global Terms of Service, as well as with core elements of the new IT Rules,” it said.

Twitter India managing director resigned from the firm last year.

Twitter is not the first tech giant to sue the Indian government. WhatsApp sued New Delhi last year, challenging new regulations that could allow authorities to make people’s private messages “traceable,” and conduct mass surveillance.

It’s unclear if the new lawsuit will impact Twitter’s proposed acquisition by Elon Musk.

COAS Bajwa directs army officials to stay away from politics, avoid politicians: report

Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has issued fresh directives to all his commanders, and officials of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), to stay away from politics and avoid interacting with politicians, reports Ansar Abbasi for The News.

“These directions have been given in the wake of Imran Khan-led PTI propaganda against the establishment alleging certain ISI officials of having been involved in political engineering to manipulate the upcoming by-elections in Punjab to the disadvantage of PTI.”

The security establishment is of the view that the PTI should share evidence of the claims they are making. The establishment claims that even if an iota of evidence is provided, strict action would be initiated against those responsible.

Former Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry tweeted, “The desire of the army chief is commendable but in my personal opinion, the army needs to make a three-year project through which the army can separate itself from politics.”

Director-General (DG) ISI, Lieutenant-General Nadeem Anjum, made it clear in February to all officials of the ISI that no interference in politics and political matters would be tolerated.

The incumbent DG ISI decided soon after he joined the office to keep the institution away from politics.

Lt-Gen Anjum had conveyed to all the concerned authorities not to release to the media his pictures or video footage taken during official meetings.

‘Prove them traitors’: Bushra Bibi’s audio leak out

An alleged audio of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi has been leaked in which she is instructing Khan’s focal person for Digital Media Dr Arslan Khalid to make a statement against Khan’s opponents and run a campaign to ‘prove them traitors’.

In the alleged leaked audio, Bushra Bibi can be heard saying, “Khan Sahib told you to run a hashtag of treason. I have been getting calls from people that your social media was very active but after a week, it is not. You should have been very active nowadays.”

She also allegedly said that Aleem Khan and others will talk filth about Khan, her friend Farah and her as well. “They will make so much fuss and they will also give testimonies of the people but you don’t have to make any issue of it just link them all with treason,” says Bushra Bibi.

In the audio clip, Bushra can be reportedly heard instructing Khalid to build a narrative that all the PTI dissidents had joined foreign conspirators to save themselves.

The former first lady allegedly asks Khalid to direct his team to take up the issue of the government not buying oil from Russia and link it with how Imran Khan was being betrayed.

“You cannot let this matter die down,” Bushra Bibi allegedly says to him, asking him to make a trend so people know that the country and Khan are being betrayed.

“I am only telling you this, you don’t have to discuss this issue with anyone. They are after him [Imran Khan] because of this. But you have to link it with treason,” she concludes.

Responding to Bushra Bibi’s audio, PTI’s Fayaz ul Hassan Chohan condemned saying that is it unethical. He further said that there is nothing wrong in it if Bushra Bibi has linked conspiracy to treason.

This is not the first time an audio clip has surfaced on social media involving Bushra Bibi.

Earlier this month, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders played an audio tape between Bahria Town chief Malik Riaz and his daughter, revealing how allegedly Farah Gogi “demanded a gift” for former first lady Bushra Bibi.

  • ‘What has my Mum got to do with Pakistani politics?’ Jemima lashes out at PML-N for staging protest again

‘What has my Mum got to do with Pakistani politics?’ Jemima lashes out at PML-N for staging protest again

The ex-wife of former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, Jemima Goldsmith, lashed out at Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for organising a protest outside her 88-year-old mother’s house this weekend.

In a tweet on Thursday, she said, “What the hell is wrong with these people (PML-N)? Another mass demonstration was announced outside my 88-year-old mother’s house this weekend.”

She pointed out that this is the third time that such a protest is being organised outside her mother’s home. She called out the ruling party members for dragging her mother into Pakistani politics: “What has my Mum got to do with Pakistani politics? It’s disruptive for her and a total waste of police time.”

Jemima tweeted after the PML-N announced a protest in response to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) call to gather in Hyde Park on July 2 and then march to Nawaz Sharif’s London residence.

Since the removal of Imran Khan through a vote of no-confidence, several times PTI protested in London outside PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s residence. Similarly, PML-N workers have protested in front of Goldsmith’s residence and her mother’s in response.

Back in April, a video shared by Jemima on Twitter showed a man threatening to break into a bedroom in her house. She had stated that her children were being targeted by protesters and that she was facing anti-semitic abuse on social media.

After the incident, the act was widely condemned on social media as people were of the view that Jemima is not related to Pakistani politics anymore and she shouldn’t be dragged into this matter.

It is pertinent to mention that after her divorce from Khan, Jemima moved to London and since then she has been living there with her sons.

  • Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Zardari to be new neighbours?

Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Zardari to be new neighbours?

Former President Asif Ali Zardari has reportedly bought two bungalows of 14 kanal in one of the elitist areas of Gulberg in Lahore, reports The News.

According to media reports, discussions to purchase another bungalow of 6 kanal for residential purposes in Lahore are ongoing. This bungalow is situated in front of PPP’s rival Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s house near Gaddafi Stadium.

If the deal finalises, Zardari and Qureshi would become neighbours. It is pertinent to mention that Qureshi left PPP in 2011 after almost two decades of serving under the leadership of Benazir Bhutto. Since then, he is on bitter terms with PPP.

Zardari and his son Foreign Minister (FM) Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s current residence in Baharia Town in Lahore will be converted into a farmhouse.

Earlier, the former president hinted at buying a residence in Gulberg so that he can hold more meetings with people, as it gets difficult for people to come to his residence in Bahira Town.

    Stronghold in Punjab

According to Geo Urdu, Zardari is currently in Islamabad. However, he will later visit Lahore and hold meetings to discuss the political crisis in Punjab.

Prior to this, the PPP co-chairman claimed that his party will form the next government in the Centre after winning the next general elections.

“The next government (in the Centre) will be the PPP’s. I promise if I get a chance to return to power, I will turn around Pakistan 110 degrees. The PPP has the capability to help the country negotiate all the challenges,” said Zardari.

Talking about politics in Punjab, Zardari said, “The PPP has to sacrifice its politics to save Pakistan. I will myself look into the party affairs in Punjab and ensure its revival here.”

“We will strengthen our party in Punjab and ensure we get our fair share in the province,” he said.

Criticising former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, Zardari said that the policies of the “anokha laadla” (favourite) had caused price hike and inflation in the country.

The PPP is currently ruling Sindh, where it is in power for the third time in a row, while it is also a major stakeholder in the incumbent federal government.

  • Govt unveils Rs9.5 trillion budget 2022-23, focused on sustainable growth

Govt unveils Rs9.5 trillion budget 2022-23, focused on sustainable growth

The federal budget for 2022-23 has been revealed with a total outlay of Rs9,502 billion. It includes measures for sustainable economic growth, industrial and agricultural development, and aid for the poor ones.

Finance Minister, Miftah Ismail began his address by claiming that the PTI administration had left Pakistan’s economy in shambles and harmed investor confidence by often switching finance ministers and monetary policies.

He slammed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, claiming that he never cared about the poor, claiming that “keeping an eye on potato and tomato prices is not a PM’s duty”.

He claims that the governing party took control of the country despite the fact that it will have to make difficult decisions to save the economy, which will affect their individual parties’ appeal, but they chose to put the country’s interests ahead of their own.

Relief for working class and the poor

He claimed that the budget is geared at providing greater relief to the working class and the poor, as opposed to the wealthy, because the working class prefers to buy local products over foreign ones, boosting the economy.

Budget 2022-23, according to Miftah Ismail, will concentrate on offering facilities to farmers planting crops that supply cooking oil, such as corn and sunflower, so that the country does not need to import palm oil, which is at an all-time high in the worldwide market.

Slashing furniture, stationary expenses in govt offices

Considering the current economic downturn, the administration has decided to restrict operational expenditures to the absolute minimum, and that new furniture and stationary for government offices will be completely prohibited. Other than obligatory diplomatic visits, all government-sponsored foreign trips will be prohibited.

    Education

The government has set aside Rs65 billion for the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the current budget. In addition, the HEC has been granted Rs44 billion for development programmes, which is 67 per cent more than the previous year.

Miftah Ismail said that this is a demonstration of our commitment to the youth. We are encouraging provinces to completely fulfill their obligations in terms of higher education promotion in the coming years, he said. The HEC budget includes 5,000 scholarships for Balochistan and tribal district students. He added that a unique scholarship programme has been introduced for Balochistan’s coastal communities.

The Finance Minister said that 100,000 laptops would be provided to students around the country on affordable instalments. Funds have also been set aside for the purchase of cutting-edge equipment to improve engineering and technology education.

15 per cent Increase in govt employees’ salaries

In Budget 2022-23, Miftah Ismail announced a 15 per cent increase in government employee salaries, as well as the merger of adhoc allowances.

He said that the tax on savings certificates, pensioners’ benefit accounts, and martyrs’ family assistance accounts had been reduced from 10 per cent to 5 per cent.

Small merchants will be subject to a new fixed income and sales tax regime, according to the Minister. Electricity bills would be used to collect taxes ranging from Rs3,000 to Rs10,000 under this method. This will be a final agreement, and FBR will have no right to inquire about the tax.

According to Miftah Ismail, a proposal has been made to increase initial depreciation rates for industries and other businesses from 50 per cent to 100 per cent in the first year.

Furthermore, he stated that any tariffs imposed on industrial units during the import of raw materials will be considered adjustable in order to protect the business community’s working capital.

    New industrial policy

He stated that an industrial policy is being implemented in partnership with the Asian Development Bank in order to boost the country’s industrial base. He stated that the Prime Minister has directed that all exporter claims be resolved as soon as possible.

A sum of Rs40.5 billion is due to them right now, and we will pay it as soon as possible. Regardless of financial challenges, sales tax refunds are issued swiftly. Industrial feeders have been spared from load-shedding, according to him, in order to ensure that the industrial sector has uninterrupted power supply.

A new strategy for promoting investment in the country is being developed which aims to provide an enabling atmosphere for investors by eliminating the lengthy procedure. The government will overhaul the dispute settlement structure to make it easier for domestic and foreign investors.

    Boosting agriculture sector

Talking about the agriculture sector, Finance Minister stated that Rs21 billion had been set aside to boost agriculture and livestock productivity. He stated that the Ministry of Food Security, in consultation with the Planning Commission and the provinces, has developed a three-year growth strategy. This plan aims to increase agri-production, increase farmer prosperity, and promote smart agriculture and self-sufficiency.

    National Youth Commission

The Finance Minister also announced the development of a National Youth Commission to help youth realise their full potential. Various plans for the youth, he noted, have been offered. He stated that a coordinated strategy is being implemented to strengthen the role of educated youth in the growth of the country. According to him, the youth employment initiative will create over two million job chances.

He added that a scheme to foster youth entrepreneurship will be launched, under which interest-free loans of up to Rs500,000 and loans of up to Rs25 million will be made available on easy payments. He stated that in this lending arrangement, a 25 per cent quota has been been aside for women. He stated that women will be given precedence in hi-tech training in order to achieve economic empowerment. Youth development centres would be set up over the country, he said.

A green youth movement would be launched to involve young people in environmental initiatives. Funds will be set aside to distribute laptops on a merit-based and instalment basis, as well as the construction of 250 mini-sports stadiums across the country. Miftah Ismail stated that an innovation league would be established in order to improve the youth’s potential. He said that a talent quest and sports drive programme will be developed for youngsters between the ages of eleven and twenty-five.

    Reduction in govt spending

According to the Finance Minister, the current government’s top focus is austerity. This budget includes a reduction in government spending, and we are taking meaningful moves in that direction. He stated that automobile purchases will be completely prohibited. Apart from development initiatives, procurement of furniture and other products would be prohibited. Cabinet members and government officials will have their gasoline quotas lowered by 40 per cent. There will also be a ban on international tours paid for by the government, with the exception of the most important ones.

A medium-term macroeconomic framework has been established to put the economy on a road of development, according to the Finance Minister. He emphasised his belief that by implementing this framework, we will be able to steer the economy in the right way. Our biggest problem, he remarked, is to expand without a current account deficit. As a result, a minimum of 5 per cent will be obtained without disrupting the balance.

    Improved fiscal and monetary policy

He said that the GDP will increase from Rs67 trillion to Rs78.3 trillion in the coming fiscal year and the government is attempting to lower inflation through improved fiscal and monetary policy. During the next fiscal year, inflation will be decreased by 11.5 per cent.

He predicted that the tax-to-GDP ratio will rise to 9.2 per cent in the coming fiscal year, up from 8.6 per cent now. He noted that in 2017-18, we had kept this ratio at 11.1 per cent. He stated that the overall deficit, which is currently at 8.6 per cent, will be steadily reduced. In the coming fiscal year, this will be reduced to 4.9 per cent. Similarly, the overall primary balance, which presently stands at -2.4 per cent of GDP, will be reduced to 0.19 per cent.

    Import and export

Imports, which are estimated to be $76 billion this fiscal year, would be lowered to $70 billion the following fiscal year, according to the Finance Minister. Exports are currently $31.3 billion, but will increase to $35 billion in the coming fiscal year. The current account deficit will be decreased from -4.1 per cent of GDP to -2.2 per cent of GDP.

Remittances, which are predicted to continue at $31.1 billion this fiscal year, are expected to grow to $33.2 billion next fiscal year.

‘Car servicing needed, please look into this’ Twitter asks Miftah to get things done after Maryam’s tweets

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz has asked Finance Minister Miftah Ismail to look into the matter of pet food import ban, tagging him in a tweet by journalist Gharidah Farooqi.

Gharidah tweeted: “It’s been more than two weeks that Pet Food import remains banned in Pakistan. Request to PM Shehbaz Sharif. Kindly lift this ban. Pl listen to the please of voiceless creatures waiting for you to show mercy. Almost NIL impact on import bill. Why not then?”

Maryam Nawaz tagged Miftah Ismail and wrote, “Please look into this.”

Last month, when the import ban was imposed and some customs officials confiscated people’s private shopping at airports, Maryam Nawaz had asked Miftah Ismail to look into it. He had responded: “Ji I will.”

Maryam Nawaz’s tweets for Miftah Ismail has sparked a meme fest on Twitter.

PM Shehbaz directs power authorities to reduce load-shedding to two hours

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif instructed the power authorities on June 4 to reduce load-shedding throughout the country to two hours, alerting that he wanted results rather than explanations.

As per a report from ARY News, PM Shehbaz Sharif, who presided over a meeting to resolve the challenge of hours-long unexpected load-shedding in the country, asked power division officials and federal ministers to do whatever was essential to reduce load-shedding to two hours per day.

While dismissing explanations for the duration of load-shedding, PM Shehbaz stated that officials should minimise the sufferings of the general public rather than furnishing justifications.

“I only wanted to provide relief to the masses and will not accept the ongoing situation of load-shedding,” a defiant PM stated that he will not compromise and will not allow any minister or official to relax until the problem is resolved.

He instructed officials to work around the clock to bring power to businesses. The prime minister also aimed the finance minister to secure all necessary resources to address the problem. It is worth noting that Pakistan’s generation capacity has deteriorated, with the power disparity reaching over 7,000 megawatts.

As per power division sources, the country’s electricity demand has risen to 27,200 megawatts due to the hot weather. The length of unannounced load-shedding across the country has also been elevated to 14 hours. “There is a nationwide power production of 20,000MW, resulting in a shortfall of 7200 MW,” they added.

According to reliable sources, the country presently acquires 4,635 megawatts of electricity from hydropower, 1,060 megawatts from thermal power plants, and 9,677 megawatts from IPPs. Considering the findings, 3 key power companies have shuttered 16 power plants in Pakistan largely owing to a shortage of fuel.

  • Professor Kirmani and Amna Baloch arrested during protest outside Karachi Press Club

Professor Kirmani and Amna Baloch arrested during protest outside Karachi Press Club

Visuals of a Professor at LUMS and a feminist activist, Nida Kirmani are being shared online, in which she is being severely manhandled by the Sindh Police.

These visuals are from a protest outside Karachi Press Club, organized at 4:30pm today by the families of Baloch missing persons, where Professor Kirmani and others joined in support. Baloch Yakjehti Committee and Voice For Baloch Missing Persons organized the protest and attendees included activist Baloch Amna Baloch, Zareena Baloch, the wife of still missing Sharif Baloch and others.

Invitation for the protest on May 24 at 4:30 pm – March from Karachi Press Club to C.M House

The protesters demanded an explanation of the increased enforced disappearances ever since Pakistan’s first female suicide bombing took place inside the University of Karachi campus on April 26. Since then, several Baloch female students have been abducted in Karachi and Balochistan.

The police reached ahead of time and since the beginning of the protest, kept the whole area under heavy surveillance, interrogating the press until eventually they arrested a bunch of protesters and took them into custody.

Murtaza Wahab, Adviser to the Chief Minister Sindh and Aseefa Bhutto Zardari also tweeted in support of the protesters.

On Tuesday, the Sindh government had imposed Section 144 across the province for at least 20 days. The police action today was taken in justification of keeping up that law. Eventually those arrested were released as well. Journalist Zia ur Rehman spoke to Team Current, and explained the rising unrest in Karachi following the multiple enforced disappearances ever since the University of Karachi suicide bombing.

Professor Kirmani tweeted a selfie from inside the police station, as those in custody wait to be given their phones back.

In conversation with activist Sammi Deen Baloch, it was emphasised that when the initial arrests were made only two women were at the venue with some young students. The police also included lady constables who manhandled and dragged the women to the police van. After the arrests were made some protesters including Sammi Deen Baloch stood their ground outside the Karachi Press Club demanding their release. The police took pictures of every one and tried to make some activists sign what Sammi Deen called a “fake statement” which claimed that the police had mistakenly made the arrest but the protesters refused to sign and it was reported that the police’s behaviors softened when they realized that Professor Kirmani was one of the women.
