    Power outage alert: Residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad to experience disruption today 

    Residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad are slated to experience a power outage today. The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has announced a scheduled power suspension programme for various areas within its jurisdiction. This planned interruption is imperative to facilitate necessary maintenance and routine development work. 

    According to an IESCO spokesperson, the power supply to different feeders and grid stations will be temporarily suspended during specific time windows. From 08:00 AM to 01:00 PM, the affected areas include Islamabad Circle, Anguri, NCP, Mengyal, Shahdara, Shahpur, Khayaban Iqbal, Pir Suhawah, Quaid-e-Azam University, Punjab House, Bari Imam, Mandala, Athal, NIH, and Suhadran Road Feeders. 

    Additionally, from 07:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, the power supply will be interrupted in the following areas: Islamabad Circle, SES, Fazal Ghi, NDC-1, H-11/4, I-10/2, New Exchange, Kidney Centre, Dr AQ Khan, Islamic University, Bahria University, G-10/1, 2 & 4, G-9/1, CWO, Dhok Najo, Raja Sultan, Eid Gah, Khasala, I-8/4, Service Road, Muslim Town, and FHS Feeders. 

    This scheduled power outage will also affect areas within Rawalpindi Cantt Circle, including FECHS, Swan Garden-I, IST, New Rawat, Old Rawat, CWO, AOWHS, and Sparco Feeders. Furthermore, areas covered by Rawalpindi City Circle, Pindhon, I-14/3, Noon, I-16/1, HPT Radio Pak, Lakho Road, Ameer Hamza, Officer Colony, New Milpur, Jinnah Camp, KRL, Zeeshan Colony, and Lakho Feeders will experience power interruptions. 

    According to APP, residents in Attock Circle, specifically Ghorghashti, Bara Zee, Maskinabad, Shah Dir, Radio Pak-I & II, Larnpur, Qaziabad, GBHP Colony, HMC Road, Taxila, Sher Shah Suri, Islampura Feeder, Chakwal Circle, Chakra Feeders, Jhelum Circle, and F-3 Gul Afshan, Sanghui, Chotala, Kantrela, Pakhwal feeders, and their surrounding areas will also be affected by this planned power suspension.

    Late on Thursday, the Ministry of Energy confirmed that all countrywide power had been “fully restored,” adding that the issue with two 500kV lines in Karachi’s south had been fixed.

    The ministry posted on its official Twitter account, “Electricity supply is being increased from alternative power plants, which will return to normal by Friday morning.”

    According to Dawn, Energy Minister Khurram Dastgir had expressed his optimism that normal electrical service would be fully restored by tonight.

    He reported power outages on Thursday morning in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Quetta, Multan, and Faisalabad while speaking at a press conference.

    “Karachi and Quetta are priority regions now,” he said. “Nearly 8,000 MW of power went offline at around 9 AM however, the government has restored 4,700 MW,” he announced. “Restarting of power plants will consume time therefore complete resolution of the problem will take a few more hours.”

    He said that a thorough investigation had been ordered and a team had been formed for the purpose, citing the government’s worry regarding simultaneous faults in two power lines at the same time.

    “We will take action after receiving the inquiry report,” the minister said. “Due to our efforts, northern part of the country remained unaffected from the breakdown.”

    According to the Ministry of Energy, a “fault in the country’s southern transmission system” caused a significant power outage on Thursday that affected Sindh and Punjab.

    In addition to Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Jamshoro, Sujawal, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Umarkot, Sanghar, Nawabshah, Matiari, Tharparkar, and Larkana, electricity was also cut off in other parts of Sindh.

    Additionally, there were power outages in a number of Punjabi cities, including Rajanpur and Rahim Yar Khan.

    “Due to an accidental fault in the country’s southern transmission system, several southern power plants are tripping in stages, which is disrupting the transmission of electricity in the southern part of the country,” said the Ministry of Energy in a tweet post.

    “The Ministry of Energy is diligently investigating the cause of the outage and the power system will be fully restored as soon as possible,” it added.

    According to reports, a technical issue has caused the Guddu Thermal Power Station in Kashmore to stop producing electricity. Technical issues at the power plant prevent the 600MW and 747MW units from running.

    The 500-KV system nationwide is not functioning, according to sources at National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC). They claimed that the causes are still being determined.

    The southern port city’s many neighbourhoods, including Malir, Sarjani Town, and Saddar, experienced power outages. Since 10:00 am, there has been no electricity in these neighbourhoods.

    Furthermore, there were power disruptions in places including Gulshan-e-Maymar, Federal B Area, Liaquatabad, and Super Highway.

    Baldia, Orangi Town, North Nazimabad, and North Karachi are all without electricity. In addition to this, some locations, notably the SITE Industrial Area, lack electricity.

    “There are reports of multiple outages from different parts of the city,” Imran Rana, Spokesperson, K-Electric, said in a tweet post.

    “We are investigating the issue and will keep this space posted,” he added.

    According to information provided by the Ministry of Energy, the KE’s spokesperson verified that the halt in energy supply was caused by a failure in the southern transmission system in an update released about 11:45am.

    He said that efforts to restore the supply had begun, and it would take about five hours to finish the process.

    K-Electric is looking into reports of many outages from various areas of the city, K-Electric spokesperson Imran Rana wrote in a tweet.

    There are currently efforts being made to restore power. K Electric claims that all residential areas have had electrical supply restored, adding that 1,600 of Karachi’s 1,900 feeders are now operational.

    Even though it has been more than eight hours since the breakdown started, the remaining 300 feeders have still not been powered up, leaving some areas without power.

    The federal cabinet okayed a two-day weekend for government personnel on Tuesday, but no decision on early market closure could be made.

    The meeting was hosted by Prime Minister (PM) Shahbaz Sharif, during which methods to limit loadshedding, which has increased in recent weeks, were reviewed. The meeting was unable to reach a consensus on early market closures and referred the matter to a sub-committee for additional study and consultation with stakeholders.

    Power Division gave a summary for the Energy Conservation Measure at today’s meeting, which included market closures by 7 pm with Saturdays off due to rising petroleum prices, according to Geo.

    As part of the austerity plan to decrease costs, the cabinet also approved a 40 per cent reduction in government employees’ petrol entitlement.

    Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif proposed four and a half working days a week on Monday to help save fuel and energy in the face of rising fuel prices and power shortages.

    “In the current situation, all around the country, there should be a total holiday on Saturday and Sunday and a half working day on Friday in every week,” the defence minister stated on Twitter.

    He suggested that there should be four and a half working days in a week, as well as an hour increase in office hours during working days.

    The federal minister, in another meeting, suggested changing market schedules at a separate meeting last week, which was led by the premier.

    Khawaja Asif has strenuously opposed the idea to open markets from 1 pm to 1 am, arguing that marketplaces should only be open during the day to maximise the use of sunshine, which is accessible 365 days a year.

    He had stated that even without Karachi, we could save 3,500MW if the markets adjusted their timings correctly, but that painful decisions would have to be taken.

    Water supply from Rawal Dam and Khanpur Dam has been disrupted, causing severe water shortages in the city.

    The water crisis has been attributed to long hours of unscheduled load shedding by Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco), which cuts the electricity every hour and on a regular basis, according to the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Managing Director.

    Wasa claims that the water supply from Khanpur Dam and Rawal Dam has been severely impacted and that it is insufficient to meet demand.

    On a daily basis, the city requires around 60 million gallons of water. It is, however, only supplied with 30 million gallons per day.

    All tube wells remained closed due to long and unexpected load shedding, according to Wasa Managing Director Raja Shaukat Mehmood. In this situation, he stated, getting water from Rawal Lake Filtration Plant was impossible.

    He stated that we are not receiving enough water from Khanpur Dam to meet demand. Due to persistent load shedding, we were unable to store water in tanks, he said. He said that hardly half of the water from Rawal Dam is delivered to the city and cantonment board districts.

    Mehmood further stated that due to low voltage and tripping, some motors have been burned. He has pleaded for the provision of uninterruptible electricity in order to deliver water to the inhabitants.

    K-electric responds to power outage in different parts of Karachi

    A power outage is reported in several parts of Karachi on Wednesday, the city’s power utility K-Electric reported.

    According to Geo News, the areas facing power outages are Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Federal B Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Clifton and Defence. 

    K-electric, while responding to the complaints, stated on Twitter that it is “actively monitoring the situation and will keep updating this space”.

    A resident told Geo News that just before the outage, there was pronounced fluctuation in the power supply.

    A lot of the areas where a power outage was reported were areas where it drizzled today, leading to people hoping that the rains expected this month will not cause havoc in the city like before.
