    Power outages intensify as energy shortfall surpasses 6,500 megawatts

    Amid scorching heatwave conditions, the prolonged power cuts have aggravated the misery of citizens, exacerbating the energy shortfall, which now exceeds 6,500 megawatts. 

    According to sources from the Power Division, the country’s total electricity production stands at 20,402MW, while the demand has surged to 27,000MW.

    Presently, private sector plants contribute 8,900MW of electricity, and hydropower accounts for 6,200MW.

    Additionally, nuclear power plants generate 3,164MW, government thermal plants produce 956MW, and wind projects contribute 1,245MW, as per the sources.

    Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted pre-monsoon rains accompanied by dust thunderstorms in the central and upper regions of the country.

    It is expected that the heatwave conditions will alleviate starting from June 25.

    Power outages have been reported in all major cities of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Rawalpindi and Karachi.

    While no confirmed reports have yet poured in on the situation in other cities, the blackout is being deemed a national one with a fault allegedly occuring in the National Transmission & Despatch Company (NTDC) transmission lines.

    The cause of the fault has not yet been ascertained, however, sources say it could be due to the foggy weather conditions prevailing in the country.

    Earlier, the outage began with voltage fluctuations. The same being a countrywide problem emerged as soon as people took to social media.

    Karachiites lash out at K-electric for power outage, KE responds

    As this year’s spell of monsoon rains wreaks havoc in Karachi, flooded roads and houses, clogged drains and power outages have been disrupting Karachiites’ routine for the past few days.

    Amid all this, the city’s residents found themselves in added misery as there is also hours-long power outages. Most of them have taken to Twitter to share the current situation of the city and express their outrage over the situation. K-electric has said that “power will be restored as soon as it is safe to do”.

    Actor Ushna Shah also tweeted: “Excuses excuses guys. No flooding in Phase 6 and no power since almost 20 hours now.” She added that DM (direct message) is also of no use.

    Later, K-Electric said that “several areas remain inaccessible due to high water level” and that “power will continue to remain closed until all standing water is cleared”.

    PM Imran refuses to accept Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s resignation

    Televangelist and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker in the National Assembly, Aamir Liaquat Hussain, has claimed that Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan has rejected his resignation letter.

    “After a long meeting with PM Imran Khan, my four-page resignation was rejected. I opened my heart told the PM everything. The PM hailed my efforts for raising my voice for Karachi’s issues and said thinking about the public was the role of an elected leader,” he tweeted on Monday.

    Earlier in the day, Hussain had posted on social media that he was on his way to the PM House to submit his resignation.

    Last week, he had announced resigning as an MNA from Karachi over prolonged unannounced power outages in the port city.

    “I confess that I am a helpless MNA of Karachi. I am unable to provide electricity to the people of my city. I cannot see the people of my city suffer. I will ask the prime minister for time and submit my resignation,” he had said.

    A spike in power outages is spelling misery for a major chunk of the metropolis’ residents with some areas having interrupted electric supply for weeks now.

    This, however, is not the first time that the PTI MNA has been in the news for being upset at his party.

    In 2018, a month after the general election, reports had emerged of differences between Hussain and the PTI after he had expressed anger with the party over failure to invite him to a dinner hosted at the Governor’s House.

    According to reports, Liaquat left a WhatsApp group comprising PTI Sindh’s leaders over the issue.
