    Prisoner serving a life sentence wins Rs. 1 million educational scholarship

    Naeem Shah, a prisoner who has been serving a life sentence for 11 years for committing murder, was awarded a scholarship worth Rs1 million to undertake a degree in chartered accountancy for his outstanding academic performance.

    The official application reads, “In these joyous moments, we feel delighted in informing you that based on your academic performance in HSSC results; you fulfill the eligibility criteria for the Edhi CA Talent Scholarship Program of ICAP”

    According, to the official letter, the eligible candidate must be among 20 position holders within Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) from respective intermediate boards.

    The scholarship was given to him by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan (ICAP).

    Senior Superintendent of Central Jail Muhammad, Karachi Hassan Sehto revealed that while being behind the bars the prisoner gave his matriculation exams. He then undertook the intermediate examination in which he secured excellent marks and attained a position in the top 20 students. Throughout his time, he was well-mannered and spent most of his time studying.

    Later, he applied for the ICAP scholarship programme and got selected.

    Naeem is serving a life sentence and will most likely complete the program while in jail.

    21 prisoners in Uttar Pradesh, India do not want parole to stay safe and healthy during the Covid pandemic. Parole is a temporary hold-up of the sentence.

    As per reports, the Director-General of Jail Administration Anand Kumar said that the prisoners who have requested that to the authorities are kept in nine prisons of Uttar Pradesh.

    He said that the reason is that when they get three months of parole then these days will be added to the sentence period later.

    The second main reason is that the prisoners feel that the kind of food and the healthcare services they are getting in jails will not be possible once they are out on parole for 90 days.

    They said that medical facilities are available and daily health checkups are done in jails. They also get food on time so they are safe and healthy in prison and not when they are out trying to make money and living.

    Four requests from Lucknow jail, two from Maharajganj jail and three from Ghaziabad jail have been reported.

    Kumar said that the prisoners have written their requests clearly so they have to agree to take their viewpoint and respect it.

    Due to the extraordinary gush of Covid-19 cases in the country, the Supreme Court on May 8 ordered for decongestion of jails with immediate release of all the inmates who were approved for bail or parole last year.

    The top court had taken suo motu cognizance of the congestion of prisons all over the country on March 16, 2020, saying that it is hard for the prisoners to keep social distancing to avoid the spread of coronavirus.

    Special PIA flight brings back 113 prisoners from Malaysia

    A special flight of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) brought back 113 stranded Pakistani prisoners from Malaysia. The flight brought back the Pakistanis from Kuala Lampur to Islamabad after the Malaysian government approved their amnesty.

    According to reports, Special Assistant to Prime Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari instructed the Pakistan High Commission in Malaysia to make all the arrangements to bring back maximum number of Pakistani prisoners after registering them under the Malaysian Royal Amnesty Scheme. Most of the detainees were stuck in Malaysia after their visas expired while others were involved in petty crimes and had served their sentences but were unable to come back due to lack of funds.

    A large number of family members of the deportees were present at the airport to receive their loved ones. The Pakistani deportees were shouting slogans in favor of PM Khan.

    The Press Information Department also shared that “Earlier this year, 320 Pakistani nationals were repatriated that makes a total of 8,190 Pakistani nationals released by Malaysian authorities till date.”

    Pakistan and
    Malaysia have close mutual ties which were more improved when Prime Minister
    Imran Khan signed several agreements with the Malaysian government during his
    visit to the country in November this year.
