Alia Bhatt faces backlash for silence on Gaza crisis, lands on ‘Block Out 2024’ list

Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt has joined the ranks of celebrities like Taylor Swift and Priyanka Chopra on the ‘Block Out 2024’ list, a group of entertainers and influencers being blocked by fabs for not speaking up about the Gaza genocide. Despite her recent appearances at events like the Met Gala and the Gucci Cruise show, Alia Bhatt has faced criticism for not raising her voice for Palestinians.

The ‘Block Out 2024’ movement encourages people to unfollow and block these celebrities on social media, aiming to hit them financially by reducing their social media influence.

Other notable names on the list include Priyanka Chopra, her husband Nick Jonas, and cricketer Virat Kohli. These celebrities have significant platforms but haven’t used them to speak out against Israel’s attacks in Gaza.

Some big names from the West have also been added to the ‘Block Out’ list, including Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Kylie Jenner, Zendaya, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Khloe Kardashian, Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, Demi Lovato, Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Zac Efron, Joe Jonas, Kevin Jonas, and Justin Timberlake, among others.

The movement gained traction after this year’s Met Gala, where celebrities flaunted expensive outfits while Rafah was being mercilessly bombed.

Priyanka Chopra joins calls for peace in Gaza

Priyanka Chopra is the latest celebrity to join the calls for peace in Gaza. On Monday she reshared a post by UNICEF on Instagram in support of the ceasefire in Palestine as thousands of children and minors got killed, while several others are missing amid the Israeli bombardment.

Priyanka has served as the Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF since 2016. The agency offers humanitarian and developmental aid to children in over 190 countries and territories around the world.

The post shared by Priyanka is attributed to Catherine Russel, the executive director of UNICEF, and reads, “Children need a lasting humanitarian ceasefire.”

The reshared post was originally posted on December 2.

The caption urged all parties to ensure that children are protected and assisted, following their obligations under international humanitarian law.
In the caption, the organisation wrote, “Today, the Gaza Strip is once again the most dangerous place in the world to be a child. After seven days of respite from horrific violence, fighting has resumed. More children will surely die as a result.”

It added, “Before the pause, more than 5,300 Palestinian children were reportedly killed in 48 days of relentless bombing – a figure that does not include many children still missing and presumed to be buried under rubble.”

In November, Priyanka, along with other prominent personalities, extended support through an open letter while calling on the US Congress and US President Joe Biden to undertake immediate action for a ceasefire in the Gaza region in the Middle East.

As the tide shifts with protests being held in America by activists and journalists demanding an end to the genocide of Gaza, more Hollywood stars have added their names to an open letter calling for a ceasefire.

The letter urges Congress and President Joe Biden to call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza as the Palestinian death toll is set to hit 11,000. Right now, Israeli military has encircled Gaza hospitals, offering no safe exit for doctors and patients stuck inside without water or food.

The ceasefire letter now features more prominent names including Grammy award nominated singer Janelle Monae, Hollywood legend Richard Gere as well as Indian actress Priyanka Chopra.

Previously, speaking with the UNRWA, Richard Gere declared that the people of Palestine hold a special place in his heart.

Prominent actors like Susan Sarandon and rapper Macklemore gave speeches at the March For Palestine protest held in Washington, where both demanded an end for US complicity in Israel’s war crimes.

  • ‘Leave her alone’: fans defend Sehar Khan after trolls mock her once more over viral clip

‘Leave her alone’: fans defend Sehar Khan after trolls mock her once more over viral clip

Maybe its time we stopped over piling on actresses for mistakes they admit to?

‘Fairy Tale’ actress Sehar Khan came under fire a few days ago when a clip went viral from her interview with Something Haute. The actress was seen speaking about wanting to play roles similar to Priyanka Chopra’s “psychopath” role in Bollywood film ‘Barfi’. Her comments were slammed by social media users who pointed out that Priyanka’s character Jhilmil is autistic. However, the actress was quick to apologise in a detailed Twitter thread, admitting that she should have expressed herself better.

“In a recent interview I meant to say I want to do a role of a differently abled person but due to slip of tongue, I mistakenly said something else. I should have gathered my thoughts before answering the question to express myself better.”

“Mental disabilities and special needs are a very important matter,” continued Sehar. “And I have immense respect for people who are dealing with them; hence I apologize if I unintentionally hurt anyone.”

But soon after this 2 Instagram influencers Aadi Adeal Amjad and Naveed Raza mocked the newcomer actress by recreating the viral clip, and fans slammed them for bullying Sehar after she had apologised.

Many pointed out that the 23-year-old actress, who has stepped into limelight because of ‘Fairy Tale’, shouldn’t be trolled over her English skills.

Others said that this sort of behavior reeks of the sexist trolling many female celebrities face when they reach the peak of their careers. An X user shared a clip from Mashion’s Actors Roundtable where Mahira Khan talked about female actors being brought down by audiences over small things, leading to them doubting themselves and their success.

In the gist of all of this, we’d like trolls to remember that before rushing to pile on an actress, remember that Sehar Khan is still a newcomer, and someone who has already expressed regret at the ableist comment. Also, direct your energy towards dramas that are promoting domestic abuse and child marriages to actually bring about some change within the industry.

  • Are Joe Jonas, Sophie Turner getting a divorce?

Are Joe Jonas, Sophie Turner getting a divorce?

Venus in retrograde really making a mark here with the way celebrity couples are splitting up. First it was Ariana Grande and her husband, then Britney Spears and Sam Asghari, and now rumors are circulating that it will be Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner next.

According to People Magazine, the Jonas Brothers singer has reportedly hired a divorce lawyer after being married to Sophie for four years, with whom he shares two children.

The couple have not responded to immediate requests for clarification, so it is yet to be proven if the rumors are true. However, TMZ revealed that a source has said the ‘Game Of Thrones’ actress wasn’t completely prepared for marriage or motherhood, while Joe had expressed his desire to expand the family. The source elaborated that the couple had been on shaky grounds for the past six months.

The tabloid said Joe had taken on the role of the primary caregiver for their two children, while his band embarked on another tour across the United States.

The couple met in October 2016, after which the ‘Burnin’ Up’ singer slid into the actress’ DM’s.

“We had a lot of mutual friends. And they’d been trying to introduce us for a long time,” she gushed to Harper’s Bazaar UK. “We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue.”

Later, the two decided to meet while the Jonas Brothers were touring in the UK, after which Sophie recalled instantly liking the singer.

“He didn’t bring security. He brought a friend, and they drank just as hard as the rest of us. I remember us two spending only a couple of minutes on the dance floor, and then we found a space in the far corner and we just talked,” she said. “We talked for hours, and hours, and hours. And I wasn’t bored. It wasn’t contrived, it wasn’t small talk — it was just so easy. Soon, we were inseparable. And then I went on tour with him.”

The pair announced their engagement in October 2017, after which they tied the knot in a surprise ceremony in Vegas on May 2019, then again in June at a star-studded ceremony held at Le Château de Tourreau in Sarrians, France.

  • Moammar Rana’s wife says Nadir Ali responsible for comments made by her husband

Moammar Rana’s wife says Nadir Ali responsible for comments made by her husband

Lollywood A-lister Moammar Rana made headlines two days ago when a clip from his interview with controversial host Nadir Ali went viral. In the clip, Rana criticised Indian actress Priyanka Chopra’s looks, stating that crush on her ended after seeing her in real life.

The comment was slammed by social media users for being degrading and sexist. The duo also called the actress a ‘maid’. Actress and television host Mathira slammed Nadir Ali in a post on her Instagram stories

A user on X, formerly known as Twitter wrote:

“Nadir Ali & his equally vile guest Moammar Rana made deeply offensive rac1st & elitist comments on @priyankachopra comparing her to a ‘maid’ owing to her complexion. Domestic workers are beautiful, Ms. Chopra is an achiever but the minds of these 2 failed men are HORRIBLY UGLY.”

Now, the actor’s wife Mehnaz has stepped in to defend her husband in a lengthy statement on her Instagram stories, pointing out that it was the controversial Youtube host who had made the disgusting comments about the Indian actress, not her husband.

“It’s not as big of a deal as much as people are making it, as usual. Moammar never commented on her skin tone/complexion as the host tried really hard to make him comment on that, simply saying he couldn’t recognise her as screen beauty is totally different. I don’t see any of our beloved Pakistanis speaking up against her comments on Pakistan and Kashmir while she’s a “human rights activist” as much as you guys are siding with her on this statement, Moammar simply couldn’t recognise her and honestly sharing his experience with the host about it, he’s not responsible for the hosts comments. it’s being taken out of context as you all can see the host was looking for a controversy and got one. Thanday hojayein, much love and peace??”

  • Delays in ‘Jee Le Zaraa’ shoot: Priyanka out, Anushka in?

Delays in ‘Jee Le Zaraa’ shoot: Priyanka out, Anushka in?

The Indian film news site ‘Moviefied Bollywood’ has reported that Priyanka Chopra has walked away from the anticipated female-led film ‘Jee Le Zaraa’, costarring Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt, after inordinate delays.

The site has also reported that Anushka Sharma and Kiara Advani are being considered for the role.

Since the post went viral on social media, fans are jumping in to recommend their ideal Bollywood actress to do justice to the role, with the majority of people wanting to see Deepika Padukone in the role.

“Get Deepika instead, and this should be fun… the publicity will be unreal,” one user wrote.

Chopra had taken to Instagram in 2021 to announce the film ‘Je Lee Zaraa’ which was inspired by the idea of having an all-girls movie which would celebrate friendship, and then she had later shared this idea with her two real-life close friends Alia Bhatt and Katrina, who had agreed to come on board.

  • Mockery of Princess Kate in ‘Citadel’, ‘The Little Mermaid’ enrages Twitter

Recently, a few clips from ‘Citadel’ and ‘The Little Mermaid’ which appear to be making crude jokes about Princess Kate Middleton, have surfaced on Twitter and enraged users who have assumed that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, is the mastermind behind them.

In ‘Citadel’, which stars Priyanka Chopra, a friend of Markle’s, a sexist joke was made about Middleton. In a scene from the third episode, a line says, “The chief of armed forces? You might as well have asked me how to get between the legs of the Duchess of Cambridge!”

Middleton was formerly recognized as the Duchess of Cambridge, before her role was elevated after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

According to Page Six, Priyanka Chopra, who is the main lead on the show, was present on set when this line was delivered, and was reportedly aware of it.

Chopra and Markle were close friends before the Duchess’ marriage to Prince Harry, and Chopra attended their wedding in the UK, later writing a gushing note about her.

In ‘The Little Mermaid’ a scene has been interpreted by fans as a dig at Middleton.

In this scene, as Page Six reported, Prince Eric and Ariel meet after she sacrifices her voice to come on land. Eric is trying to guess what is her name, and his first guess is Diana, then Catharine. To which Arial makes a disgusted reaction to which Eric responds “OK, definitely not Catherine.”

Since these two clips went viral on social media, fans have criticised Chopra’s actions as classless and slammed the makers behind ‘Citadel’ for allowing such a tasteless and sexist joke.

  • ‘Spark Notes version of an action series’: Critics blast Priyanka Chopra’s Citadel

Game of Thrones actor Richard Madden has teamed up with Bollywood turned Hollywood diva Priyanka Chopra for Amazon Prime’s action series ‘Citadel’, with the episodes already streaming online. Both actors went on the traditional promotional tour, gushing about each other, with Chopra revealing that this was the first time she was getting the same pay as her male co-star, and Madden praising Chopra as a ‘brilliant improvisor’ who is fully committed to her roles.

However critics are not impressed with the $300 million spectacle, calling it a ‘flop’, ‘poorly-paced’ and a cheap copy of James Bond movies, without anything much to say about the current affairs of the world.

Time magazine called the series ‘all spectacle, no substance’ and shared how aside from the glamorous locations, as well as the charming performances of both Chopra and Madden, who star as former lovers and top agents working for an elite international spy agency ‘Citadel’, the show didn’t offer much:

“But when the smoke clears, geopolitical window dressing aside, the show has little to say on the state of the world. Whether it’s due to behind-the-scenes turbulence, including the replacement of a showrunner and extensive reshoots, or comes out of the difficulty of making a spy thriller palatable to people in all of the 200-plus countries and territories where Prime Video is available, the absence of substantive ideas, or even much Bond-style humor, makes Citadel feel pretty pointless. Maybe it’s possible to make a great show that appeals to everyone without offending anyone, but this isn’t it.”

The Ringer had also shared criticism of the lack of dramatic tension, and called the show “a spark notes version of an action series” because of the limited attention given to detail and narrative, recounting how the original showrunner Josh Applebaum exited the series in 2020 over creative differences.

Rolling Stones has labelled Citadel as “$300 million disaster for Amazon,” and harshly calling it “bland, generic and almost shockingly cheap-looking, given the price tag.” The performances by Chopra and Madden were called ‘charming but also not popping off the screen.
