NOT GUILTY: Khan vindicated in cipher case

Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquits Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and the party’s vice president Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cypher case on Monday.

A two-member bench of the IHC, including Justice Aamer Farooq and Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb, heard the petition filed by the PTI founder. IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq announced the verdict in the case against both politicians.

The PTI founder and the party’s vice chairman were sentenced to ten years each in the case.

    What is cyphergate?

The issue first came to light less than a month before Imran Khan’s removal from the prime minister’s office on March 27, 2022, when the PTI founder waved a letter addressing a public rally, claiming that it’s a cypher sent from a country that wanted Khan removed, which was later said to be the United States.

The former prime minister claimed, while addressing the public, that this letter was the reason for his ouster as prime minister.

Initially, Khan didn’t reveal the name of the country, but after a few days, he blamed the United States for plotting against him. The convicted former prime minister alleged that Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Affairs Donald Lu was responsible for his removal.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur can play a significant role in engagement between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the establishment, The News’ senior journalist Ansar Abbasi has reported.

Informed sources told The News that Gandapur’s behaviour was entirely different to his usual outspoken self during the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) meeting, as compared to his attitude while addressing public gatherings.

He behaved very calmly during his interaction with the federal government, The News reported on Tuesday.

On Monday, during a joint press conference along with the interior minister Mohsin Naqvi and power minister Owais Leghari, Gandapur stressed that his political activities should be kept separate from his administrative duties. He further stated in a presser that he is ready to work with the federal government to resolve the issues faced by KP.

The chief minister also conveyed the message of PTI founder Imran Khan: “We do not have any conflict with institutions, there is no disagreement with the governor’s policy, and we will have to negotiate on the issues and rights of the province.”

“He is cooperative, he positively takes part in discussions on issues of national interest and never engages in any sort of conflict,” a source who has attended a few such federal-level meetings revealed about the conduct of the KP chief minister.

Alvi wants people from both sides of country to forgive each other

Former president and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader, Dr Arif Alvi said on Wednesday that people from both sides of the political spectrum should forgive each other. This can be seen as an indirect message to the ‘poweful circles’ regarding the violent protests that occurred last on May 9.

He gave this statement while talking to journalists after visiting an anti-terrorism court in Lahore, where he met multiple PTI leaders, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Omer Sarfraz Cheema, and Ejaz Chaudhary.

On May 9 last year, law enforcement agencies arrested PTI founding chairman Imran Khan for the first time in connection with a corruption case, triggering violent riots across the country in which several installations of the security establishment were attacked.

Arif Alvi assured PTI leaders during the meeting that they don’t need to worry about the cases as the people of Pakistan are with them.

PTI senior woman leader Dr Yasmeen Rashid told Alvi to convey her message to PTI founder Imran Khan that she is happy despite facing multiple challenges in jail.

A district and sessions court approved a request on Friday to bring Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and party leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi to court. The court directed authorities to make sure that the politicians appear in court on April 20th.

Judicial Magistrate Mureed Abbas heard the petition for the production of evidence in the Parliament attack case involving Imran Khan and others. During the hearing, Naeem Panjotha, the lawyer representing the former prime minister, presented his arguments.

The lawyer argued that the Superintendent of Adiala jail does not obey the order of any court. He insisted the court ensure that jail officials adhere to the orders and produce Khan.

He also said that jail authorities come up with excuses and don’t even arrange for a video link hearing for the PTI founder.

The judicial magistrate, following Panjotha’s arguments, said Khan is in Adiala jail and the situation is different, and while the option of video link is there, the attendance takes place in the e-court.
