  • What the hell is going on in Punjab ?

Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi won the confidence vote in the Punjab Assembly (PA) in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A total of 186 members of the provincial assembly (MPAs) voted in support of Elahi as the chief minister on a resolution moved by Punjab Minister Mian Aslam Iqbal and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Raja Basharat.

The Opposition boycotted the session, claiming that the pre-requisite legal requirements were not met and that Punjab Governor Baligh-Ur-Rehman’s order of vote of confidence was sub judice.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) refused to accept the proceedings, with federal Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah terming them against the Constitution and “illegal”.

The interior minister, speaking to media outside the Assembly premises, said that the PTI lawyers argued before the court that the governor’s order is unconstitutional.

“So, how did they conduct the confidence vote under Article 130(7) today?” he asked.

“PA Speaker Sibtain Khan said the confidence vote would not be taken during today’s session. However, the agenda was changed at midnight, and a vote of confidence was initiated by deceit.”

On the other hand, PTI leaders celebrated the victory and praised party Chairman Imran Khan for the win.

  • Pakistan will take fiscal measures set by IMF but there will be no burden on the common man: Ishaq Dar

Pakistan will take fiscal measures set by IMF but there will be no burden on the common man: Ishaq Dar

Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Ishaq Dar has categorically denied rumours suggesting that the government is considering “access to foreign exchange held with commercial banks.”

“It is categorically denied and clarified that there is no such move under consideration of the government,” said Dar, in a series of tweets.

The statement come days after the finance minister said that the country’s foreign exchange reserves stand at $10 billion, a much higher amount than the SBP’s $5.6 billion reserves as of December 30, 2022, since “dollars held by commercial banks also belonged to the country.”

This comment gave rise to fears that the government may confiscate dollars from private banks as had been done in 1998 when Dar was the finance minister.

However, Dar said that his comment was “greatly misconstrued” and nothing like this would happen.

Dar explained at a press conference with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other federal cabinet members that before 1999, all foreign currency was deposited with the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), and private banks were not permitted to hold any foreign currency.

“In February 1999, when I was the finance minister, we devised a system whereby a substantial amount [of dollars] remain with [private] banks. It was on June 30, 1999 that reserves were broken down into three columns — those with the SBP, commercial banks and total.

“Whenever Pakistan’s reserves are quoted anywhere in the world — a survey or a document — the [total figure] is quoted and then a breakdown is given. I gave a breakdown too,” he added.

The minister claimed that certain people were to blame for the country’s dire circumstances, which caused it to drop from the 24th to the 47th largest economy in 2016.

“Even now, they cannot tolerate any good development. They gave such a twist [to my statement],” he said, adding that while the federal cabinet was busy working for Pakistan under PM Shehbaz’s guidance, such people were spreading rumours that the government would take dollars from commercial banks.

“Nothing of that sort will happen. Everything is all worked out … and in order. Nothing to worry about,” he assured, urging those “spreading the rumours” to play a positive national role.

Dar also tweeted about the reserves later, saying national foreign exchange reserves always include forex held with SBP and commercial banks.

Furthermore, Dar tweeted about the reserves and stated that SBP and commercial bank holdings are usually included in the nation’s foreign exchange reserves.

“Recently I quoted the forex reserves figure based on this principle. Some vested elements who ruined this country’s economy in the past, gave it a deliberate twist and started a campaign as if govt was considering access to foreign exchange held with commercial banks which indeed is the property of the citizens.

“It is categorically denied and clarified that there is no such move under consideration of the government,” he emphasised.

The finance minister once again claimed that Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves would increase soon.

As of December 30, 2022, Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves had decreased to $5.6 billion, an eight-year low. This is equivalent to imports for three weeks.

The swift decrease has made it impossible for the government to repay its international debts without taking out new loans from allies.

Govt to comply with IMF conditions without burdening common man

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme’s ninth review, which would release $1.18 billion, has been postponed for months due to the government’s refusal to comply with some conditions imposed by the international lender.

In today’s press conference, Dar acknowledged the delay and claimed that it was due to revenue collection. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) missed its goal in December, the finance minister said, and the super tax that the administration enacted in June of last year had been declared unlawful by a high court.

Dar said that his team informed the IMF that Pakistan could recover the amount easily after the Supreme Court takes a decision on the super tax.

“We are not changing the fiscal budget target and we will achieve it,” he claimed.

Dar said that the IMF suggested that the government implement fiscal measures and eliminate some subsidies. “We have identified some budgetary measures, but the average person won’t be overburdened.”

He asserted that the measures would be very specific and classified.

‘Imrani tolay ki jaali popularity aglay 3 mahinay mein apnay anjaam ko pohanchegi’: Rana Sanaullah

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah in a press conference today predicted that the popularity of the “Imrani tola [Memebers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)]” will finish within the coming three months.

Calling the PTI’s popularity fake, the minister said, “Government is trying to bring the country out of the economic crunch PTI left it in, and the fake popularity narrative that PTI claims to have will be shattered in a matter of three months.”

Speaking about the Geneva Conference, Rana Sanaullah said that the world stands with Pakistan on the appeal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, adding that Pakistan’s expectations have been fulfilled with the world helping the country beyond expectations.

Declaring Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Pervaiz Elahi and PTI Chairman Imran Khan responsible for the dollar hike, he said that these people bought dollars and smuggled them abroad.

Khan will share all information with Elahi, Moonis says they have become best friends

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader, Moonis Elahi has said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has assured his father, Chief Minister (CM) Punjab, Pervaiz Elahi, that he would share whatever information he gets with the CM first, reports Dawn.

Offering details on his father’s meeting with Khan, Moonis said, “Instead of any ill feelings, they have become best of friends today.”

Pervaiz Elahi assured Imran Khan that the former prime minister was his leader and he would stand by him. “Our alliance is stronger than before,” Moonis asserted.

It was reported in the media that Khan on Monday expressed distrust in Elahi, saying allegations of corruption worth billions against the PML-Q leader were affecting his popularity.

According to the news report, Khan in a meeting with the party’s senior leaders said, “I cannot bear to have such allegations against my coalition government in Punjab.”

Reports said that the former premier insisted that all PTI legislators in the Punjab Assembly should persuade Elahi to take a vote of confidence and dissolve the assembly.

According to media reports, Khan and his party leaders were trying to convince Elahi to take the trust vote before the next hearing at the Lahore High Court on January 11.

Trouble for Imran Khan, Asad Umar, Fawad Chaudhry as ECP issues arrest warrants for all three

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued bailable arrest warrants for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, along with two party leaders, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry.

The warrants were issued by ECP’s four-member bench headed by member Nisar Durrani hearing a contempt case against the electoral body and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Sikander Sultan Raja.

The bench, while rejecting the PTI leaders’ pleas for exemption, directed them to appear before it on the next hearing which is scheduled for January 17. The commission had reserved the verdict on their pleas on January 3.

During the hearing today, the ECP rejected the pleas of PTI leaders seeking an exemption from appearing before the commission and issued arrest warrants for them against surety bonds worth Rs50,000 each.

The bench, subsequently, adjourned the hearing till January 17.

Both Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry took to Twitter and showed their disapproval towards the the issuance of the bailable arrest warrants.

In August last year, the ECP had issued a contempt notice to PTI leaders for insulting the election commission during various public meetings, press conferences and several interviews.

The notice charged that they insulted and passed unparliamentary, intemperate and contemptuous remarks against the electoral body on various occasions.

‘Woh audios jahan Bushra Bibi mujhe baita keh rahi kyun leak nahi hoti?’: Zulfi Bukhari

Zulfi Bukhari, a close confidant of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has said that the former First Lady Bushra Bibi is like his mother.

Journalist Azaz Syed asked Zulfi that recent audio leaks of phone conversations between Bushra Bibi and him suggest that they might be having an affair. Zulfi nodded in disagreement, showing his disappointment on the supposition.

“Politics has become too dirty now. Just the way you said, a mother-son relationship is being disrespected. Conversations of a religious woman are being twisted and copy-pasted [edited],” said Bukhari.

“I have given my life to politics, I understand that whatever I do in my life will be in the public eye, but someone who is not in politics, I am not comparing her [Bushra Bibi] with Maryam Nawaz, but when you enter politics, you have to bear many things. So a person who has not given their life to the public domain was associated with something so pathetic,” he stated.

“She is like my mother. The audio where she is calling me her baita [son] were never leaked. The rest of the conversations were leaked after editing them.”

“I want to ask why has politics stopped so low. What are you so fearful off?” questioned Bukhari.

  • Aleem, Aun Chaudhry not forming a new party: report

Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Awn Chaudhry and Abdul Aleem Khan have dismissed reports that they are forming a new political party, reports Raees Ansari for Geo News.

The news report states that Chaudhry clarified that former PTI stalwart Jahangir Khan Tareen, Aleem and Chaudhry Sarwar are “not forming a new political party”.

“Currently, we are part of the government and are standing with it. Tareen group is an ally of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and will remain an ally,” Chaudhry said.

It was also reported that senior politician Aleem Khan denied joining a political party or forming a new one, saying: “There is no truth in the reports of my inclusion in a new political party.”

“I am neither a part of any political party nor have any intentions to become one,” Aleem said adding that he has good ties with former PTI leaders Chaudhry Sarwar and Jahangir Tareen but has no intentions of becoming active in politics.

It is pertinent to mention here that Aleem and Tareen were the most prominent leaders in the PTI’s early years. Internal differences got in the way with Tareen first and then Aleem parting ways with the PTI chief Imran Khan.

Putting aside political rivalry, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry has extended his best wishes to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior vice president Maryam Nawaz after she underwent throat surgery in Switzerland.

A day earlier, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb had said that Nawaz is in good condition after her three-hour-long throat surgery that took place in Geneva.

The minister said the PML-N senior vice president had extended gratitude to all the people, especially the party workers, who had prayed for her and conveyed good wishes to her.

  • ‘It was military vs PTI’: Gen Bajwa was actively involved in sending PTI govt packing, says Fawad

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry has said that in the no-confidence motion against his party’s Chairman and then-Prime Minister Imran Khan, it was actually the PTI versus the military.

Fawad claimed during a BBC HARDTalk interview yesterday that “some army generals, as well as ex-chief General [Qamar Javed] Bajwa were actively involved in sending the PTI government home”.

Establishment played a very active role in the ouster of Imran Khan

“And in that conspiracy, some army generals were involved, there is no doubt about that and the establishment actually played a very active role in the ouster of Imran Khan. In fact, the last army chief was [also] actively involved in sending our government home,” he alleged.

Host Stephen Sackur asked Fawad about DG ISI Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum’s press conference, in which he, alongside then ISPR chief Lt Gen Babar Iftikhar, said Imran Khan asked the military to perform an unconstitutional act during the no-confidence vote.

Chaudhry responded: “The current [army] leadership has just assumed the office and we are hoping there will be a change in the policy, but the last chief was not speaking truth when he said we asked [for their] help. We only asked for their neutrality.”

Unelected institutions like the judiciary and the military exercised their powers beyond Constitution

Dismissing the notion that the PTI was against the military, Fawad said his party was not against anyone. “In Pakistan, unelected institutions like the judiciary and the military exercised their powers beyond Constitution [in the past], which is known to everyone.”

Bygones are bygones: PTI looks forward to having good relations with US

Talking about how Khan blamed United States for his ouster and then later changing his narrative that he wants to have good relations with US, Fawad said that the PTI never said it seeks a war with the superpower. “Instead, it wants good bilateral ties. No party wants confrontation with the US,” Fawad noted. However, at the same time the PTI doesn’t want any country including the US to dictate Pakistan, he opined.

Saying bygones are bygones, Fawad said his party looks forward to having good relations with the US, and hopes the superpower too would like to collaborate with Pakistan’s most popular political party.

Calling Osama bin Laden a “martyr” was a slip of a tongue

To a question, he clarified that Imran never called Osama bin Laden a “martyr”, saying he had a slip of a tongue in one speech which was clarified later.

Shehbaz govt ruined all efforts due to their ignorance of Afghanistan’s history and problems

Chaudhry said the then-PTI government was holding “continuous negotiations” with the Afghan government “and we were close to actually resolve the issue”.

He, however, blamed the incumbent government for “ruining” all efforts due to their “ignorance of Afghanistan’s history and problems”.

PTI could wait for elections but….

The PTI leader said his party could wait for elections “but this government is not ready to hold polls as they know people will oust them through vote”.

He insisted that elections were needed for Pakistan and not for the PTI. “We are asking that elections should be held at the earliest so that a new responsible government can take care of economic affairs.”

Zardari and Sharifs had put Pakistan into a vicious debt cycle

Stephen Sackur said Pakistan’s debt stood at $116 billion when the PTI took over in 2018, but it rose to $230 billion when the party left government.

Fawad responded saying his party’s government had to borrow funds to return the loans taken by the previous government. He maintained that his party’s government worked to restructure the loans and did as far as economy is concerned.

He said, ” Zardari and Sharifs had put Pakistan into a vicious debt cycle.

Imran gave the country one of the cleanest governments in 75 years of history

Sackur said figures did not bear out his claim, referring to promises made by the PTI before elections, especially those about corruption, He said that Pakistan fell by 20 points on the corruption perception index (CPI).

Fawad disagreed, arguing that these were the departments related to rule of law, for example judiciary, not the political side, that had contributed to that index. He said Imran gave the country one of the cleanest governments in its 75 years of existence.

The PTI leader said it is not possible to create economic stability without political stability as [political uncertainty in the country is such that] no one knows who will rule the country three or five months from now.
