‘Alia didn’t know who Kishore Kumar was,’ reveals husband Ranbir Kapoor

Kishore Kumar, the legendary singer who defined Bollywood music for decades, was a mystery to Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt when she first met actor Ranbir Kapoor.

Recently, at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), the Barfi actor shared a surprising moment from his first meeting with wife Alia Bhatt.

“I remember the first time I met Alia, she asked me, ‘Who’s Kishore Kumar?’ It’s just the circle of life… people are forgotten. It’s important we remember our roots,” Ranbir said.

The Tamasha actor also announced a significant tribute to his late grandfather Raj Kapoor, revealing that the Raj Kapoor Film Festival will run from December 13 to December 15.

The festival will showcase restored versions of 10 iconic films by the legendary actor-filmmaker.

“We are organizing the Raj Kapoor Film festival across India. It’s a great way to celebrate his legacy and preserve his contribution for future generations,” Ranbir said.

He also talked about his plans of  making a biopic on the late Raj Kapoor, a project that he has been “considering for some time”.

I talk to many people, including director Sanjay Leela Bhansali about how to make a biopic on Mr Raj Kapoor. A biopic is about accurately depicting a person’s life, including their relationships, hardships, and low points, not simply about their achievements.

Ranbir also spoke of his bond with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, whom he calls his ‘Godfather’. He credited Bhansali for shaping his knowledge of film and acting.

“I am extremely blessed to have him as my godfather. Everything I know about films, everything I know about acting, it is something I learnt from him,” The Sajnu actor shared. It merits a mention that he worked as an assistant director on Bhansali’s film ‘Black’ before making his debut with Saawariya in 2007.

Ranbir commended Bhansali’s steadfast commitment to his art, saying, “He hasn’t changed at all. He is extremely hard-working. All he thinks about is his movies. He just wants to speak about the character, he wants you to create, do something different.”

Bhansali’s upcoming film ‘Love and War’ features a star-studded cast that includes Ranbir, Alia and Vicky Kaushal. The film is expected to be released by the end of 2025.

Ranbir Kappor starred in film such as, Wake Up Sid, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Raajneeto, Rockstar, Barfi, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Sanju and last starred in Animal.

  • Why was Bobby Deol’s character a Muslim in ‘Animal’?

Why was Bobby Deol’s character a Muslim in ‘Animal’?

Bobby Deol plays the role of a Muslim villain, Abrar Haque, in the recently released Bollywood film Animal.
Deol has said that he didn’t think of his character as a villain but as someone with childhood trauma.
Abrar, the negative character, is the cousin of the film’s protagonist Ranujay Singh (Ranbir Kapoor).

Sandeep Reddy Wanga was asked in a recent interview why Abrar (Bobby Deol) belongs to a Sikh family but he himself is a Muslim.

“I have seen that in life when people are completely disappointed, they go to a church, a mosque or a sage who helps such distressed people.” In order to get rid of the problem, they give tawzee or suggested to change the name, he said.
“I have even seen people convert to religion in such desperate situations to completely change their identity. We have seen many people convert to Islam and Christianity but we have never seen anyone convert to Hinduism. So, I thought I should show this fact in my film because a Muslim man can marry more than once so he can have more children so I can show a lot of cousins in my movie story.”

Sandeep stressed, “That’s the only reason I cast Abrar (Bobby Deol), a character from a Sikh family, as a Muslim in my film.”
He clarified that he did not do this to make Muslims look bad.

Alia Bhatt is done with criticism of husband Ranbir Kapoor

Bollywood A-list couple Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor were embroiled in several controversies due to the latter’s sexist comments. In August, the actor was slammed by netizens for being a “toxic, privileged man” following Alia’s revelation in a Vogue interview that Ranbir didn’t allow her to wear lipstick when the two were dating.

Now, Alia has addressed the criticism directed at her husband in an interview on Koffee With Karan.

“I have a very candid way of speaking…things just get picked out of context which happened recently. My team told me ‘Ye kuch out of hand jaara hai’. There were serious articles written about how he was a toxic man.”

Alia added that she was concerned about the criticism, as Ranbir is the opposite of toxic.

Ranbir’s advice was to ignore what the media said about her, as long as her career was doing well, Alia narrated.

“Ranbir says this, ‘Alia the audience owns you, they can say whatever the hell they want to say about you, as long as your movies are doing well please don’t complain sitting in your apartment in Bandra.”

Speaking about the criticism, Ranbir revealed he was okay with being labelled as an example of ‘toxic masculinity’, because the fight was bigger than him:

“Recently, I was reading an article about being toxic and something relating to some statement I made, and I understand. Listen, I am on your side. Whatever you are fighting against this toxic masculinity, I am on the side of people who are fighting for it. So, if they want to use me as a face, I am fine because their fight is bigger than just me feeling bad about them having an opinion on what I said.”

  • ‘It doesn’t matter’: Ranbir Kapoor responds to label of ‘toxic masculinity’

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor was the center of criticism from the public when certain moments with his wife, actress Alia Bhatt, didn’t sit well with fans. Recently, the ‘Barfi’ actor went viral after Alia’s interview with Vogue where she revealed Ranbir forbade her from wearing lipstick. This attracted severe criticism from X (formerly Twitter) users who lashed out at Ranbir by labelling him a ‘red flag’ all women should avoid.

Recently in an interview the actor, who’s the son of late star Rishi Kapoor, acknowledged the backlash, stating that he is fine with being labeled the face of toxic masculinity.

“Recently, I was reading an article about being toxic and something relating to some statement I made, and I understand. Listen, I am on your side. Whatever you are fighting against this toxic masculinity, I am on the side of people who are fighting for it. So, if they want to use me as a face, I am fine because their fight is bigger than just me feeling bad about them having an opinion on what I said,” the actor opined according to The Indian Express.

The ‘Tamasha’ actor said he accepted a long time ago he would become a part of “gossip blogs”, and further said it didn’t matter to him what critics said.

Ranbir also said him not being active on social media helps in not having to deal with the negativity that comes with being an actor “which is a great thing.”

But also, Ranbir added, his focus always remained on his work, and takes opinions about his image with a pinch of salt:

“Sometimes a lot of things are written about you as an actor, and many opinions are made, which are not necessarily true, but you have to take it with a pinch of salt. Because this image of mine, which is being created by the movies or the characters I play or by media, is something that I don’t own. It is owned by the public, it is owned by people who like or dislike my work and they are allowed to say anything as long as they give my work a chance. My focus has always been just to act.”
