A Madrassa teacher accused of raping and torturing his 10-year-old student in Abbottabad’s Mansehra was arrested by the police on Sunday.
The main suspect identified as Qari Shamsuddin will be presented in court Monday.
According to reports, a child was taken to a hospitalised on Saturday after his madrassah teacher raped him and then beat him.
The uncle of the victim Ali Gohar lodged an FIR with Pulrah police and said that the medical report of the victim had confirmed that he had been sexually assaulted by owner of the madrassa. The medical report revealed that the child was raped multiple times and had bruises on his elbows and knees and his eyes were swollen.
“We want an immediate arrest of the prime suspect in the case as condition of my nephew is still critical,” he added.
The police have registered a case and arrested four alleged partners of the madrassah teacher, including his brother.
Police said the education department has also initiated an investigation against the government teacher.
The madrassah, which was unregistered, has now been sealed and the rest of the students sent home.
The incident received widespread attention and celebrities demanded for strict action to be taken.
Make an example out of these monsters. Make an example out of these monsters. Make an example out of these monsters. Make an example out of these monsters. For God’s sake. For our children’s sake. National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) has been called out for its disappointing reaction to a student’s claim of being raped on its Islamabad campus, which surfaced over the internet on Tuesday.
According to Dawn, reports had claimed that a female student was sexually assaulted by a construction worker behind the girls’ hostel. The girl also reportedly complained to the varsity administration, “but no action was taken or FIR [First Information Report] registered”.
With social media flooding with posts claiming that rape did take place, NUST on Tuesady night took to Twitter to deny the same. It termed the reports “a desperate act of seeking attention” while also slamming “false rape allegations”.
It wasn’t later that people started calling out the university for its “dissapointing” reaction.
When we contacted authorities of @Official_NUST they were even unaware of any such incident despite of news circulating among students for past 36 hrs. If it is fabricated, why report is not being publicized? https://t.co/w7x8ERm057
only someone oblivious or evil would act like pakistan is a country where any sane person would falsely accuse someone of rape, given the repulsive mindset of the people here. as you have exhibited. thanks for showing your students where you stand in such dire matters https://t.co/tlQeZIwm39
Meanwhile, an international public policy and gender reforms specialist, Salman Sufi, who introduced the Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Act 2016 and South Asia’s first Violence Against Women Centre, urged the varsity to allow an independent probe into the incident.
I have decided to move to #IHC with the help of @MustafaRamday to compel @Official_NUST for an independent investigation into rape allegations.
— Salman Sufi (Get New Covid Booster Today) (@SalmanSufi7) December 25, 2019
“Safety must never be a factor students have to compromise on to secure an education. The era of student abuse on campus must be brought to an end now,” Sufi said while speaking to The Current.
“I have decided to launch a confidential reporting mechanism for students from all across Pakistan where they can report sexual abuse on campus and we will take action on it. To start, if NUST doesn’t allow or initiate independent investigation into rape allegations, I will move a case in court to compel them to do so.”
He further said that time for institutions or individuals to “self-stamp their exoneration from any assault allegation” had ended, and there must be an independent third-party review of facts.
A special court on Tuesday awarded the Chunian child rapist-murderer death sentence on three counts, along with a life sentence on one count and a fine worth Rs3.2 million, for one of the four rape and murders he had committed earlier this year. He has also been directed to pay Rs200,000 compensation to the legal heirs of the victim.
According to reports, the court awarded the verdict to the 27-year-old rickshaw driver over the murder of only one of the four children, whose remains were recovered back in September. However, the cases of the remaining minors are still pending before the court.
On October 1, the perpetrator Sohail Shahzad was arrested by police in a case pertaining to the rape and murder of four minors in Chunian, located about 70 km south of Lahore. Four children — aged between eight and 12 years — had gone missing since June this year with the latest, eight-year-old Faizan, disappearing on the night of September 16.
Soon after, the remains of three of them were found on September 17 from sand dunes near Chunian bypass. The discovery sent waves of shock and terror among the residents who protested against the continuous cycle of child abuse in the area.
Considering the matter was of grave concern, Prime Minister Imran Khan took notice of the incident, ordered an inquiry and overhauled the local police set-up.
Two weeks later, Shahzad was arrested after his DNA matched with samples recovered from the remains of a victim. During the initial questioning, Sohail confessed to sexually abusing and killing all four children.
Due to security concerns, the trial against the convict was held at Kot Lakhpat Jail. A total of 23 witnesses recorded their statements against the convict.
One of four Indian men on death row over the infamous 2012 Delhi gang-rape and murder appealed against his sentence citing pollution.
Akshay Singh Thakur was one of a group of men who gang-raped a 23-year-old woman on a bus in India’s capital late at night in December seven years ago.
Her case and death, 12 days later from extensive internal injuries — sparked national protests and international horror, and became synonymous with India’s high rates of sexual violence against women.
Filed through his lawyer, the now 31-year-old said in his review petition to the Supreme Court that the air quality in New Delhi was like a “gas chamber” and its water “full of poison”.
“Everyone is aware of what is happening in Delhi-NCR (national capital region) with regard to air and water. Life is going to be short, then why death penalty?” the petition said.
According to India Today, this argument is prefaced by another bizarre argument which cities ancient Indian texts such as the Vedas, Puranas and Upanishads to say that during ‘Satyug’ (the first of the four ages mentioned in Hindu mythology), people used to live for “thousand years”.
The petition, as it questions the practice of awarding death penalty, then says that we are now in Kalyug (the last age in Hindu mythology) where the average lifespan has reduced to 50-60 years.
Akshay is the final defendant out of four given the death sentence in the case to file a review petition before India’s top court. It too was expected to be rejected.
Media reports this week said that the men could be hanged before the end of the year, and possibly on December 16, the anniversary of the attack.
Some reports said that Tihar prison, where they are incarcerated, has held a dummy execution to test the gallows and that special ropes are being brought from elsewhere though a Tihar prison official said that he had no knowledge of any such preparations.
Every winter Delhi is shrouded for months in a toxic smog that experts say is shortening the lives of the mega city’s 20 million inhabitants.
The pollution appeal comes shortly after another Indian woman, Dr Priyanka Reddy was gang-raped and murdered last month, sparking protests and calls for reform of the country’s notoriously slow legal system.
Indian police on Friday shot dead four detained gang-rape and murder suspects as they were re-enacting their alleged crime, prompting celebrations but also accusations of extrajudicial killings.
The men, who had been in custody for a week over the latest gruesome case of violence against women to shock India, were shot in the early morning as they tried to escape during the staged re-enactment in Hyderabad.
Deputy police commissioner in the southern city Prakash Reddy revealed that “They were killed in crossfire. They tried to snatch weapons from the guards but were shot dead.”
The four were accused of gang-raping and murdering a 27-year-old veterinary doctor Dr Priyanka Reddy before setting fire to her body with petrol underneath an isolated bridge late on November 27.
The woman had phoned her sister saying she was scared of the men before her phone went dead. She said police did not take her seriously when she said her sister was missing.
The victim
Like in the infamous 2012 rape and murder of a woman on a Delhi bus, the case sparked demonstrations and calls for swift and tough justice, with social media swamped with demands for them to be put to death.
Shortly after their arrest hundreds of protesters also tried to storm the Hyderabad police station where the four accused were held. One lawmaker in the parliament called for the men to be “lynched” and another for rapists to be castrated.
Several hundred people flocked to the scene of the men’s deaths on Friday, setting off firecrackers to celebrate and showering police with flower petals.
The victim’s sister also welcomed the killings.
“I am happy the four accused have been killed in an encounter. This incident will set an example. I thank the police and media for their support,” the sister told a local television station.
Women in technology hub Hyderabad, home to Google, Apple and Microsoft, distributed sweets and tied Hindu ritual threads on the wrists of policemen to thank them.
On the other hand rights activists were aghast with the killing – police in India are often accused of using extrajudicial killings to bypass the legal process, often as a cover-up in botched investigations or to pacify public anger.
India’s former federal minister for women and child developement, Maneka Gandhi termed the incident as dangerous, saying killings cannot be an alternative to the process of law.
“They would have anyway got hanging for their heinous crime, but you can’t just pick up guns and kill people because you want to. Because law is tardy, you can’t kill people. What has happened is dangerous,” Gandhi told reporters.
A Supreme Court lawyer is reported to have said, “This is murder in cold blood. Fake encounter is not the solution, reforming criminal justice system is.”
“Now no one will ever know who really raped and murdered the Hyderabad woman.”

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Attaur Rehman has been accused of raping, recording and blackmailing a university student in Multan, The Express Tribune has reported.
According to reports, the Punjab Assembly lawmaker was sexually assaulting the girl for over 11 months and was blackmailing her on the basis of the video he had recorded of the victim’s ordeal.
The police, under political influence, initially refused to lodge a complaint despite repeated attempts made by the victim, reports said and added that she was a first-year student at National College of Business Administration & Economics (NCBAE) in Multan.
Due to studies, she relocated from Lahore to Multan over a year ago and had been working at Pakistan Human Development Foundation (PHDF), a local non-government organisation (NGO) run by the accused lawmaker.
The accused took her to an undisclosed location, around 11 months back, in the guise of office work, where he allegedly raped and filmed her.
Rehman later threatened her of dire consequences if she refused to obey him.
The victim has filed an application with a local magistrate for her medical examination and attached medical records of the hospital she was recently admitted to after sodomy.
A 15-year-old girl has accused her mother of having her “sexually assaulted for money” after she refused to get into a relationship with the alleged rapist, Geo News reported.
Reports quoted the Gulistane Johar resident as saying that her mother was “a woman of bad character” and eight months ago had told her to get into a relationship with a man named Javed.
“Upon refusal, she [the mother] beat me up and had me raped by Javed over and over for many months. In return, she took money from him,” the victim claimed in the First Information Report (FIR) against her mother.
She further said that her mother had released a fake video of sexual assault on social media and filed a rape case against a man named Raza Bugti. “My mother had gotten into an argument with Bugti and forced me to support the allegations against him.”
When the victim refused, her mother allegedly beat her up and threatened to make the same rape allegations against her brother, Kabeer.
A leader of the hardliner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been removed from her position in the party’s women wing after she encouraged “Hindu brothers to gang rape Muslim women openly in the streets”, Indian media reported.
“Muslim mothers and sisters should have their honour looted as there is no other way to protect India,” said Sunita Singh Gaur in a Facebook post.
The viral post was later deleted; however, with screenshots being posted all over Twitter, Gaur was sacked as the Mahila Morcha leader.
“Be assured, BJP Mahila Morcha will not tolerate any hateful comments whatsoever from any karyakarta [worker],” BJP Mahila Morcha National President Vijaya Rahatkar said.
This is not the first time a member of BJP has spewed hate online. However, many were shocked to see the leader openly encourage rape and sexual violence.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Tahir Jamil, his sons Afaq and Saad, as well as his wife Bano, have been booked for allegedly raping their 14-year-old maid in Faisalabad, SAMAA reported.
According to reports, the case was registered by the victim’s father under sections 376 (rape) and 377B (unnatural offences) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and Section 34 (unauthorised custody) of the Punjab Destitute and Neglected Children Act (PDNCA), 2004.
According to the victim’s father, the girl was working at Jamil’s Faisalabad residence in Al Masoom Town for the past six months.
The girl returned home on Tuesday and told her family that she had been raped twice by Jamil a few months ago, while Afaq and Saad also molested her. According to the victim, Jamil’s wife Bano beat her up as well.
She also claimed being threatened by the family in case she informed anyone of her ordeal, while her father has said he was pressurised against registering a case.
The medico-legal officer has been unable to confirm the rape owing to the passage of time. No arrests have so far been made.
PUNISHMENT:
Section 376 is punishable by death or a 10 to 25-year jail sentence besides a fine. Section 377B is punishable by up to life imprisonment.
PDNCA’s Section 34, on the other hand, is punishable by a jail term between three months and five years and a fine between Rs10,000 and Rs100,000.
