    Horrifying report reveals incidents of rape, sexual abuse in Attock Jail

    The Provincial Intelligence Centre (PIC) has in a report accused several staff members at the Attock district jail of raping and harassing female visitors and prisoners.

    On September 30, PIC filed the report to Inspector General of Prisons, Mirza Shahid Saleem Baig, after conducting a covert investigation into the operations of the district jail.

    “A girl who visits the jail to see one of the inmates supplies drugs to the prisoners. A pack of charas worth Rs500 outside is sold for Rs3,000 to Rs3,500 inside the prison,” the report has stated.

    “Powerful mafias of drug peddlers have deep roots inside the jail with the support of jail administration and are making unchecked profit by selling contraband. And they also pay due share to the jail management,” the report said, adding that influential visitors are frequently given permission to meet face-to-face in the DSP’s (Deputy Superintendent of Police) room in exchange for a bribe of up to Rs. 10,000. Additionally, after paying bribes, inmates are permitted to order food from outside.

    The report recommended that jail workers who had been found guilty of breaking the rules of the jail manual or of engaging in acts of sexual harassment, corruption, or torture be disciplined.

    The damning report also suggested that female staff members should be the only ones in charge of handling female visitors to the jail in order to protect their privacy and dignity.

    “This is quite disturbing and can lead to a scandal that will reflect poorly on the Punjab administration,” read the report.
    PIC has ordered a high-level investigation into this matter.

Their name, story, and pain last only till another hashtag replaces them. We as a country are still dealing with the horrors of the murder of Noor Mukadam. We haven’t healed as a nation and now we have witnessed the bone-chilling gruesome murder of Sara Shahnawaz at the hands of a man who too was raised as a result of the patriarchal world in Pakistan.

    A harrowing murder took place in Islamabad on Friday morning. The daughter-in-law of senior journalist Ayaz Amir was murdered in Islamabad. 37-year-old Sara was found murdered at a farmhouse in Chak Shahzad. According to details, journalist Ayaz Amir’s son Shah Nawaz killed his wife at their home with a gym dumbbell. After murdering her, the accused dumped her body in a bathtub. Senior Journalist Ayaz Amir expressed his grief and shock over the murder of his daughter-in-law by his son.

    In Pakistan, men get away with crimes against women, which is why they think they can even commit murder without any repercussions. Our society and justice system have failed the women of Pakistan. It is because of these attitudes that Pakistan ranks as the second-worst country on the gender gap index.

    The story of Masha Amini from across the border is equally tragic. The 22-year-old Iranian woman breathed her last days after being arrested by a police unit responsible for forcing Iran’s strict dress code for women. She was arrested for not complying with hijab rules. Mahsa Amini was beaten while inside a police van when she was picked up in Tehran on Tuesday. Photographs of Mahsa lying in a hospital bed have gone viral, showing the young woman in a coma with her head wrapped in bandages and breathing through tubes. #MahsaAmini became one of the top hashtags on Persian-language Twitter as Iranians fumed over the death of Amini. Later we saw that women in Iran protested against the death of Amini by setting their hijabs on fire. Her death sparked widespread protests in Iran.

    What is happening to women across the world is a reminder that all this is about control, power, and oppression. One of the key reasons women are marginalised is because a powerful and educated woman leads to a powerful and educated community. Women need to be empowered by those in power. We as individuals have failed. We have failed our women and young girls. The silence of the state on matters that need the most attention is rather appalling. For how long will people keep suffering? What are our policymakers doing to make the lives of people in Pakistan better? Who should the families of the victims look up to? Who will give them justice? The beasts who killed their daughters are very much alive. Who will bring solace to the plight of the mothers and fathers of the one dead at the hands of men who could not take no for an answer or whose temper was so fragile that they had to kill women when they raised their voices for their rights.

    Gang-rape victim commits suicide after police does not register case

    A woman who was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped on Thursday in Mehran Soomro village in Tharparkar has committed suicide.

    The woman was left at an isolated place near her village after the sexual assault. She remained unconscious for many hours before her relatives found her and took her to a hospital.

    After regaining consciousness, she gave a statement to the police, narrating the incident. She said she was kidnapped on her way to Hyderabad to get documents for her father’s pension.

    After her suicide, her brother registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the suspects, stating that the family was forced to take the matter to a jirga and not go to the police.

    He also said that area police were reluctant to register the case under the influence of certain local figures. Already traumatised by the rape, his sister could not bear her helplessness and took the extreme action of killing herself, he added.

    Later, on Monday, two nominated suspects were booked by the police. Station House Officer (SHO) Ali Hassan Chang of the Kaloi police station said that an investigation into the matter has been started.

    Data has revealed that 2,211 children were sexually abused in Pakistan in 2022 from January to June. This horrifying number comes to approximately 12 children who are abused each day according to Sahil, an NGO that works against child sexual abuse. At least 1,207 girls and 1,004 boys were reported to be victims of sexual abuse according to the report.

    Earlier this week, a 10-year-old boy was allegedly raped by the Imam of a mosque in Lahore. As per media reports, the child had gone to offer Fajr prayers in the mosque where the accused, Abbas, took him to the basement and allegedly raped him. Then there was a case where a 16-year-old girl, a grade 9 student, was working as a translator for a Chinese national on a monthly pay of Rs15,000 since May 2021. She was raped by a man for months, who threatened her with dire consequences if she resisted.

    Statistics reveal how bad and ugly it is but what is being done? Answer: nothing. These are just the official numbers or cases that have been reported. There is a growing concern that most cases of rape, sexual abuse, and other such forms of violent abuse against children and young girls are not reported due to societal taboos. Despite laws in place that address these issues, not many victims have found justice. And the way our society reacts to such crimes, by blaming the survivors makes it all the more difficult for people to come forward and report these crimes. With each passing day, a child is raped, a minor girl somewhere in Pakistan is forced to get married, and somewhere someone gets abducted. The silence of the state on matters that need the most attention is rather appalling. For how long will people keep suffering? What are our policymakers doing to make the lives of people in Pakistan better? With all the abuse, harassment, sexual assault, domestic violence, and rapes being reported, where are we headed as a society? Has humanity died completely? Imagine the pain of the children and the families who have been victims and survivors of these horrific crimes. This needs to stop and the state needs to wake up from its slumber.

    For our part, The Current has been following up on rape cases for almost two years since the Motorway rape incident which happened in October 2020. As of yet, a total of 1584 cases have been recorded from what we found in news outlets. The number is likely way more than this since these are only the ones we found in the news.

    The state also needs to raise more awareness about such crimes. We need to teach our children from a very young age about these sensitive issues. We cannot hide away from these crimes that take place on a regular basis just because our society casts aspersions. If there is justice for the survivors, then more people will find the courage to report these crimes. We cannot let our children down.

    The girl had filed a complaint against the Chinese national at the Koral police station in the capital.

    According to First Information Report (FIR), the 16-year-old girl is a grade 9 student who has been working as a translator for a Chinese national on a monthly pay of Rs15,000 since May 2021.
    The man raped her for months, threatening her with dire consequences if she resisted.

    The girl became pregnant but did not tell her family. Her elder sister, however, found out and rushed her to a private hospital in F-8, where doctors found her to be over 31 weeks pregnant. Later, the sister approached the police to file a report.

    According to the police, the suspect had been arrested and his passport has also been confiscated.

    A 10-year-old boy was allegedly raped by the Imam of a mosque in Lahore. The incident took place on Wednesday in Chandrai Chowki, Kot Lakhpat.

    As per media reports, the child had gone to offer Fajr prayers in the mosque where the accused, Abbas, took him to the basement and allegedly raped him.

    The Police have arrested the prime suspect. SP Model Town Hasan Javed Bhatti said that a case has been registered against the accused and the Gender Cell is handling the case.

    A 10-year-old girl was raped and strangled to death in Karachi. As per the details, an 18-year-old tenant, who rented the child’s father’s house, raped and then strangled the girl. The incident occurred in the Mehmoodabad neighbourhood of Karachi.
    

    Police took the girl to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where she was pronounced dead.

    He further said that his daughter used to go to Zeeshan’s room to give him food. On Saturday, she did not return from Zeeshan’s room which made her family suspicious and they started looking for the girl.
    

    Zeeshan has been arrested by the police and he has confessed to raping and murdering the minor girl.
    

    According to the doctors, the girl was murdered after being brutally tortured.
    

    At least 133 women were kidnapped and as many as 85 were subjected to rape in Pakistan in the month of July alone, a report has revealed.

    A missing five-year-old Afghan boy was found murdered on Monday in Karachi. The boy was also raped before being murdered, police have confirmed.
    

    The minor went missing on Sunday, however, at the time the deceased’s father didn’t register any report. The father has told the police that he had no enmity with anyone.
    

    Later, the area Station House Officer (SHO) said that an First Information Report (FIR) was lodged on the complaint of the child’s father, who is an Afghan.
    

    Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed said that after the autopsy it was found that the boy was sexually assaulted, reports Dawn.
    

    “The face was covered with a plastic bag. His hands were tied behind his back with nylon wire and he was strangled to death,” she said.

    Two young sisters were kidnapped, kept in confinement and then raped for four months allegedly by a landlord and his employee.
    

    The horrifying incident took place in the Khaur police station area of Pindigheb town in Attock.
    

    According to the survivors’ father, who is a labourer, his 16-year-old and 18-year-old daughters were abducted by the local landlord and his personal employee four months ago.
    

    He said that the suspect kept his daughters in illegal confinement and raped them. Later, the girls escaped from confinement, reached their home and narrated the whole incident.
    

    After a medical examination by the police, it was confirmed that the teenagers were raped, which led to the registration of a case against the suspects.
    

    However, no arrest has been made so far.
    

    In Lahore, another incident took place where a 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped and then murdered. The murdered girl allegedly went swimming at a pool with her brother and five-year-old sister.

    A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped and then murdered in Lahore. The murdered girl allegedly went swimming at a pool with her brother Sajjad and a five-year-old sister.

    When she didn’t come home, her family went to the swimming pool and found her floating in the swimming pool. She was then taken to the hospital where she was declared dead by the hospital staff.
    

    The murdered girl’s family, relatives, and community people organised a protest on Ring Road. They say that she was raped before the murder.
    However, there is no mention of rape in the First Information Report (FIR). The police are investigating the case.
