    Mother of two raped in Rawalpindi at job interview

    A woman who went to Rawalpindi from Lahore was raped by an unidentified man who promised to give her a job after an interview, Dawn reported.

    As per details, the victim, a mother of two, reported to Race Course police that she along with her family were in a department store when a man came to them and distributed property advertisement pamphlets.

    She said she took a pamphlet and informed her husband about the advertisement, who later contacted a man for further details. The man told her husband to come to Rawalpindi where he could arrange a job for her in his project.

    Later, the woman with her husband and children went to Rawalpindi and reached Saddar where the man was waiting for them in a black car. Upon reaching Saddar, the husband was asked to stay there with his children as the man would take his wife for an interview and come back soon.

    She said she was taken to a hotel situated and asked to wait at the reception until her turn for an interview. She said although she resisted going into a hotel room, she was taken to a room where she was asked to wait, adding the suspect locked the door from inside, raped her and escaped.

    She said that as he was fleeing, she shouted and tried to catch him but he was able to run away.

    Police said medical examination of the victim was carried out and the suspect was arrested by Race Course police. He will be presented before a court of law for remand custody.

  • Police arrest cleric for allegedly raping teenage student

    Police have arrested a seminary teacher accused of raping and torturing a student in Rawalpindi’s Pirwadhai.

    As per reports, the Pirwadhai police registered a first information report (FIR) against Mufti Shahnawaz Ahmed on the complaint of the victim’s father. He has been booked in another case for resisting arrest.

    He had gotten pre-arrest interim bail from the relevant court to avoid arrest.

    Rawalpindi Police wrote in a tweet that the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Investigation and Superintendent of Police (SP) Rawal will supervise the probe, while merit will be ensured. The victim’s father stated that he had received a phone call from the management of the seminary, asking him to pick up his daughter who had fainted.

    The young girl told what had happened after she regained her consciousness saying the teacher had been trying to harass her for the past several months.

    She said that the teacher tortured her after she resisted his attempts of sexual harassment. She was then given a drug after which she fainted and didn’t remember what happened after that, the complainant said.

    A 30-year-old woman, who was allegedly raped and later stabbed in front of her 14-month-old son, passed away after struggling for her life in the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital on Sunday.

    As per reports, the victim’s son Gulfam was also stabbed at the crime scene. He also passed away.

    Police filed a case against the suspect under relevant sections of the law involving rape/murder and a search operation has been launched to arrest him.

    On Saturday at around 12:30 pm, the victim, her son, brother, and uncle Mohammad Ramzan reached Chak Beli Bazaar for begging in the area.

    In the FIR, the victim’s brother stated that they met a man (suspect). His sister already knew him and he offered to take her and her son to Mohra village.

    The complainant said that he was worried when his sister and her son did not return after a long time. He started looking for them and found them lying injured in the Mohra area.

    The victim told her brother that she was sexually assaulted by the suspect.  The suspect also tried to kill her by stabbing her in the neck with a knife, which left her seriously injured. She said the suspect also stabbed her son and fled away.

    The complainant said he and his uncle were taking the injured mother and son to a nearby hospital in Rawalpindi, but Gulfam died on the way. The body of the 14-month-old boy was handed over to his relatives after postmortem on Saturday.  The mother who was struggling for her life in the emergency ward of DHQ Hospital and breathed her last on Sunday.

    Initial postmortem report shows that the woman’s neck injuries were the cause of her death whereas forensic analysis was being carried out to determine if she was raped.

    The investigating officer said the victim originally belonged to Vehari and was unable to record her statement due to her critical injuries.

    After the incident came to light, Station House Officer Mohammad Asif, SI Yasir Mehmood, who is investigating the incident, and other senior police officers reached the spot and collected evidence and other relevant information.

    Police have arrested the suspect identified as Wajid Ali on Tuesday.

    A civil court in Rawalpindi has restricted Careem, a private ride-hailing service, from calling its drivers ‘Captains’ after an airline pilot filed a petition against it, reports Dawn.

    Labeeb Ahmed, a pilot by profession who filed the complaint, says he has faced “humiliation and disgrace” over sharing his job title with the ride-hailing company’s staff.

    Furthermore, he stated that due to this, he felt intimidated and argued that the title of captain should either be reserved for a pilot or an officer of the armed forces.

    In his defence, he added that due to this use of the term “captain” for Careem drivers, he has to bear the jokes as people often confuse his job title with Careem captains. This has shattered his confidence very much.

    Civil Judge Rawalpindi Rao Ejaz Ahmed Awan restricted Careem for not using this word until the next hearing and ordered the company to submit its response by July 31.

    Former Pakistani cricketer, Waqar Younis, took to Twitter to condemn the inhumane treatment of a worker by an ‘influential group’.

    A video doing the rounds on social media shows a man pushing another man tied with a rope into a sewer.

    Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Naz Baloch also condemned the incident.

    Journalist Shahid Abbasi wrote that the incident happened in Mandira near Rawalpindi.

    In another tweet, he stated that “local sources claim that the boy, who was ‘pushed into a sewer’ had an affair with a woman in the area so he was punished by the locals.”

    “Now only the police report will be able to uncover the truth,” he added.

    Police arrested the culprit who snatched the purse of a schoolteacher early Friday morning in Rawalpindi.

    As per reports, the victim’s brother, Mohammad Junaid Ahmed, a citizen of Dhoke Chaudhrian, told Race Course police that his sister, a schoolteacher, was going to her school when a motorcycle rider snatched her purse.

    CCTV footage shows the suspect snatching the purse from the victim who then fell on the ground. She started collecting some of the valuables that fell from her purse. Two motorcycle riders helped her in picking up her stuff.

    The Rawalpindi police took to Twitter to announce the arrest of the culprit.

     “CPO Mohammad Ahsan Younus had taken notice of the incident and ordered the immediate arrest of the suspect. During the arrest, the suspect tried to open fire on the police due to which he got injured by his own pistol,” the tweet read.

    According to a  press release, the suspect was arrested from Race Course area and had been involved in other thefts.

    Mohammad Zubair, Spokesperson to Mian Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz, claimed in a TV talk show that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has made peace with Rawalpindi. Zubair made this statement in ARY News programme ‘The Reporters’.

    Alluding to a rapprochement between the establishment and PML-N, anchorperson Sabir Shakir directly asked Mohammad Zubair about ‘sulaah‘ (rapprochement) with Rawalpindi. The PML-N leader confirmed to Shakir that there has indeed been a reconciliation.

    “All it will take is to pull the ladder away from PTI [Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf] and the government will be in trouble,” added Zubair. He said that this is what the PTI fears.

    Zubair further added that the relations of PML-N with the army have always been good.

    PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has been targeting the establishment quite vocally. At a rally in Gujranwala held by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) last year, Sharif’s comments against army chief shocked Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

    Senior PML-N politician Javed Hashmi recently criticised the establishment in a video that went viral on social media. The PML-N has officially distanced itself from Hashmi’s comments by tweeting: “Javed Hashmi’s statement about the national institution is his personal opinion.”

    A group of unidentified people attacked a century-old Hindu temple undergoing renovation in Rawalpindi.

    The incident took place in Rawalpindi’s Purana Qila area on Saturday when 10 to 15 people attacked the temple damaging the main door and another door in the upper storey as well as the staircase, according to a complaint registered with the police.

    As per reports, the encroachment mafia had occupied the surroundings of the temple for a long time by setting up stalls and shops there. The district administration had earlier removed all encroachments with help of the police.

    The security officer of the Evacuee Trust Property Board Northern Zone Syed Raza Abbas Zaidi filed the FIR at Pindi’s Banni police station stating that the renovation work on the temple was underway for the last one month.

    He said there were some encroachments in front of the temple which were removed on March 24.

    However, religious rites have not been initiated in the temple nor were there any idol or any other religious item.

    Faysal Quraishi urges society to support rape survivors

    Faysal Quraishi has said that rape is a stigma for perpetrators, not the victims.

    In a tweet, the actor said: “In light of recent news regarding a couple that kidnapped young girls, raped and recorded this heinous act – only one came forward and 45 didn’t for fear of society and stigma.”

    “Humari society apna qibla sahi karay, stigma perpetrator kay liye and victim kay liye support honi chaiyae,” he added.

    According to details, a local court has convicted a couple from Rawalpindi for luring girls and filming their rape to blackmail them. They were arrested in 2019.

    Additional District and Sessions Judge Jahangir Gondal awarded a death sentence to Qasim Jahangir over rape and recording explicit videos. Jahangir was also given a three-year prison sentence in addition to a life sentence and has to pay a fine of Rs2.5 million. His wife Kiran Mahmood has also been sentenced to life and has to pay a fine.

    The couple was tracked and arrested following a complaint lodged by a girl with the CPO Rawalpindi.

    According to the police, the girl, who was a student of MSc, in her statement said that the couple lured her into their car and took her to a house where she was raped and filmed. She shared that she was coming out of her college when a masked woman came to her and started talking to her. After introducing herself as a student at a local girls’ college, the two went for a walk before a car stopped near them and asked the two women to sit inside. The masked woman introduced the driver as her close relative and asked her to sit in the car.

    As soon as the girl was inside the car, black curtains were drawn and the car was taken to a house located in Gulistan Colony, where the accused raped her at gunpoint, while his wife filmed the scene.

    City Police Officer (CPO) Muhammad Faisal Rana said the couple had confessed to raping as many as 45 minors and filming their rape.

    Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Major General Babar Iftikhar has said that leaders of the opposition alliance, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), will be offered tea and snacks and looked after if they decide to stage a long march towards Rawalpindi.

    “I don’t see a reason for [them] to come to Pindi. And if at all they want to come, we will offer them chai paani [refreshments] and look after them. What more can I say?” the military spokesperson said while responding to a journalist’s question regarding PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman during a wide-ranging press briefing.

    Maulana had indicated that the opposition could turn the direction of its anti-government movement towards the army leadership, saying that the opposition alliance’s movement would no longer be directed only at the Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan-led government but also “his backers”, hinting that its possible long march to the capital “could also be to Rawalpindi”.

    Earlier, Maj Gen Babar spoke on a broad range of issues, including the border situation and to present an analysis of the security challenges of the past decade.

    The army’s spokesperson said the last 10 years were a challenging time in every aspect for Pakistan, but in 2020 alone the coronavirus pandemic and locust attack had put the country’s food security and economy in severe danger. He said while banned organisations were also being facilitated on the western border, the state, institutions, the armed forces and intelligence agencies, and most importantly the people of Pakistan were facing all challenges with a united front.

    Saying that along with restoring peace in the tribal districts on the western border, socio-economic projects were also launched in this period; he added that concrete steps were taken to strengthen Pakistan’s borders with Afghanistan and Iran. “The security situation improved considerably as a result of successful operations against terrorism.”

    Maj Gen Babar further said that whether it was India’s condemnable designs or the application of hybrid warfare against Pakistan, internal threats or external challenges, the country not only identified the threats and presented facts, but also combatted them successfully.

    “The world is recognising this [Pakistan’s position] because truth always prevails,” he maintained.
