  • A desi adaptation of Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’? Here’s who we want in the cast

A desi adaptation of Jane Austen’s ‘Persuasion’? Here’s who we want in the cast

Period dramas are all the rage now days, with Queen Charlotte becoming Netflix’s biggest hit this year, and more film adaptations like ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’, ‘Macbeth’ releasing in the last few years. But what we have yet to see, and are patiently waiting for, is Pakistani writers picking up their pen and writing a desi adaptation of a popular period book.

Because as we all know, there is literally no difference between societies during the Victorian era, and how women in Pakistan are treated today. We’re still told that marriage is our biggest accomplishment, restricted to our homes and only allowed to visit relatives rather than travel independently on our own.

So this idea flouted around the internet, when a twitter user Aimun asked how in the world has there not been a good Pakistani adaptation of Jane Austen’s popular novel ‘Persuasion’.

“So much discourse on Pakistani dramas but imagine a desi adaptation of Persuasion,” she wrote.

If you’re living under a rock and have poor reading taste, let us treat you to some culture. Persuasion revolves around a woman, Anne, who is in her late twenties and living with her family. When she was 18, she had rejected the marriage proposal of her true love, Frederick Wentworth, because of her family’s elitist assumptions that he wasn’t fit to marry into their family, a decision that breaks her heart and because of which she decides to remain single. But years later, when Wentworth becomes rich and comes back in town in search for a bride, both of them chose to avoid each other, yet cannot deny that they’re in love with each other.

And like the rest of Twitter, we are down with the idea, infact we are pitching in our own idea about who we feel should direct, write and act in this adaptation.

Marina Khan is the perfect choice for directing the project.

Why? Because Marina Khan knows how to play powerful, independent and strong-minded women from dramas like ‘Tanhaiyaan’ and ‘Tum Se Kehna Tha’. So who better than her to take on Jane Austen and give the book the justice it deserves?

    For screen writing: Sarah Majeed

For someone who wrote such a compelling and gorgeous drama like ‘Fairy Tale’, we would be anticipating the project with glee if she decided to take on this drama and rewrite it for the Pakistani audience.

For our broody and lovelorn Wentworth, we think no one but Ahad Raza Mir can capture the character.

As for the leading lady, we think Dur-e-Fishan Saleem would capture the tenderness and warmth of Anne so well.

When it comes to Anne’s father, Sir Walter Elliot, who would capture his snobbery and entitled attitude better than Behroze Sabzwari?

As for Anne’s confidant and best friend, Lady Elliot, who helps her navigate coming out of her shell and becoming brave enough to go after what she wants, we think Saba Qamar would do this character justice.

As for the villain, William Elliot, who aspires to marry Anne in order to steal her wealth, Bilal Abbas would be a great choice.

Sar-e-Rah empowers the way independent women inspire each other

If the first episode of Sar-e-Rah was about the impact one woman makes when she stands up for herself, the next episode shows us how she can keep on inspiring women from different backgrounds to take a stand for themselves.

In this episode, our protagonist Rabia meets Dr Muzna, a woman who has longed for a child has kept her husband’s infertility a secret from the rest of their family. Muzna faces the burden of this secret because of the taunts her mother-in-law gives her for not being able to give the family a child, and because she decides to go back to her job and refuses to abandon her practice.

In this episode, Sar-e-Rah explores how empowered women who broke away from the shackles of patriarchy are able to recognize the burden society puts on women who chose alternative paths towards motherhood. In one scene, when a grandmother and her child scold Muzna in a cafe for bringing her newborn child along with her, Rabia takes a stand by telling them that Muzna did a noble thing by choosing to give shelter to a child that had been abandoned.

In the rest of the episode, we watch the two women find solace in one another as Muzna faces opposition from her husband and mother-in-law for choosing to adopt a baby with taunts telling her that bringing home another woman’s child won’t make her a mother, but Razia keeps reminding her that what she is doing is quite noble. Their wholesome bond remains steady as Rabia helps Muzna in facing her husband and the rest of the family, and also to search for the mother’s child.

At a time when triggering topics like domestic violence, child abuse and forced marriages are not treated with the sensitivity and depth they deserve, it is heartening that a show like Sar-e-Rah isn’t shying away from exploring such tabooed topics and reminding women that they can find the strength they needed in each other.

‘No dance sequence was recorded’: Saba Qamar-Bilal Saeed discharged from Masjid Wazir Khan case

The acquittal pleas of singer Bilal Saeed and actor Saba Qamar in the case of alleged desecration of Wazir Khan mosque were accepted by Judge Muhammad Mushtaq in Lahore on Monday.

No scene of dancing was recorded in the mosque paresis, the acquittal plea maintained that claimants filed the case solely to blackmail celebrities. The pleas claimed that they obtained permission from the Auqaf Department to film the ‘Qabool Hay’ song shooting and that no witnesses had objected to the song being shot in the mosque.

It was argued that because the claimant’s lawyer, Farhat Manzoor Chandio, was not present when the filming was rerecorded and there was no evidence of a violation of the mosque’s sanctity, both parties should be acquitted.

A judicial magistrate had previously issued bailable warrants for singer Bilal Saeed’s arrest for failing to appear in court in a case of alleged desecration of the Wazir Khan mosque with his co-accused local actress Saba Qamar.

Both of the accused had filed for a personal appearance exemption. The Ghabrana Nahi Hai diva had gone to the UAE for professional assignments and would return by March 31, according to the accused’s lawyer, who also claimed that Saeed was unable to appear due to illness.

The reel pair landed in hot waters in 2020 when a controversial video from the shoot of their song went viral on the internet. A year later, news of the issuance of the arrest warrants of both the celebrities started circulating on the internet.

The celebrity duo have now clarified the news about their arrest in a statement issued by their lawyers.

As soon as the news went viral, the Cheekh diva and Saeed’s lawyers released an official statement regarding their arrest warrants. The details stated that their arrest warrants have been canceled and the original orders of the court have been misinterpreted to malign the characters of their clients, who are law-abiding citizens of the country.

While shooting for Bilal Saeed’s song Qubool Hai in Wazeer Khan Mosque, Lahore, the Hindi Medium diva was seen twirling for a scene of the music video.
