We don’t earn enough from dramas to run our kitchens: Saheefa Jabbar Khattak

The reality behind entertainment industry isn’t as glamorous as it seems as actor Saheefa Jabbar Khattak has revealed why making a living in the industry is tougher than it looks.

Appearing as a guest on After Hours with Ushna Shah, the Rafta Rafta actress opened up about the financial realities of working in Pakistani dramas, her journey in acting and the valuable lessons she learnt along the way.

“Making a living through acting alone isn’t easy,” Saheefa said while opening up about the struggles of running a household.

“In our dramas, we don’t make enough money to keep our kitchens running. It can’t run unless I’m doing four projects in a year and also working on social media… making appearances and hustling a lot,” she added.

When asked what lessons she has learnt from her modeling and acting career, Saheefa said it had taught her how to be patient.

“Acting has taught me a lot of patience and gratitude. We are very privileged… very, very privileged. We come to the set in a car, we have AC… we get food. Our job is tough, I don’t contest that… but when I see the rest of the crew members who hold things for us while we do a scene, who make sure the sunlight doesn’t affect us… when I see them getting one meal a day while we are waiting for our coffee before the shoot, it makes me realise how privileged we are.”

The Log Kya Kahenge actress also reflected on the importance of choosing meaningful projects.

“I waited for a good project and didn’t regret it. I’ve learned that if I regret something, everything turns negative. Now, I am back… I don’t want to say that whatever I’m doing, I’m proud of it [but] I like it. It resonates with me and my soul. I don’t approve of it, but I know this is how it is right now. In my 8-10 years, I’ve learned that out of 10-15 projects, there’s always one that speaks to your heart and you do it for that one project. Even if it took 8-10 projects to get to that point,” Saheefa said.

What a nation we are, progressing so much, right? @amarkhanlove has dedicated years to studying her craft and has achieved everything through sheer hard work. She writes, directs, and acts, yet none of this is considered ‘news.’ But her forehead? That’s what they focus on.”

The Rafta Rafta actress criticized the media for spreading the controversy, “As much as the comment sections are filled with illiteracy and ignorance, publishing houses and media portals are no better. They should be more discerning about what they choose to report as news. There’s absolutely no need to add fuel to the fire”, Jabbar added.

In the response to the Saheefa Jabbar story, Amar simply responded, “Lol but honestly saheefa I have absolutely no counter argument or reaction to this. Well craft and achievements are also a news but not a spicier one. Its only my work that shall speak and that has been speaking in my favour always Alhamdulillah. We make blunders we learn and move on. but these comments needs anything but my reaction. Hope you are enjoying a fantastic wheather in lahore, let them enjoy my tight hairline! ✌

She shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, explaining the challenges and pressures that content creators deal with. She asked for empathy and understanding from everyone in the community.

In her message, the actress from ‘Beti’ talked about how some artists face judgment and negativity because they quickly become famous or make certain artistic choices. “Even if I don’t like the work of many content creators, I believe that when God gives someone fame and wealth, I shouldn’t question why they have it.”

Saheefa talked about her own experiences defending another artist who was criticized for becoming successful quickly and charging high fees. She said, “I got many direct messages from people worried about quick fame, not being a real artist, asking for too much money, and getting everything too easily.”

Saheefa talked about how the entertainment industry changed, especially in marketing and branding after COVID-19. She said, “Influencers and content creators now have big roles in building brand images and increasing sales. We’ve seen a change where influencers are now being invited to major award shows and screenings, something that wasn’t common before.”

The actor also said it’s important to stick to your values and respect other artists. “I may not always agree with the content someone makes. But I think every artist, YouTuber, or influencer should be honest in what they create,” Saheefa said. She also talked about the need for artists to support and respect each other, “As an artist, it’s my duty to respect other artists and help them as much as I can.”

She added, “When you say bad things about other artists or criticize them in your posts, it’s not good.” Saheefa talked about feeling envious and frustrated when she sees others succeed. “Sometimes I feel frustrated too when I don’t get as much work as others, when I don’t see myself as successful as them, or when I don’t earn as much money. But each time, I remind myself that as a person, I can only work hard, pray, and hope for better things to come,” she said.

The 35-year-old ended her post by telling her followers and friends to try to improve themselves instead of feeling jealous. She said, “When we see someone succeed, we can feel jealous and want what they have, and that’s normal. It’s tough to watch someone achieve what you wanted for yourself; that’s true.”

“But let me finish by saying that as a person, you can only do your best, and you should work to improve yourself.” Her message has connected with many in the industry, leading to talks about the importance of supporting different forms of artistic expression without being judgmental.
