  • Quetta Gladiators to remove Sarfaraz Ahmed from captaincy

Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Quetta Gladiators has decided to remove captain Sarfaraz Ahmed from the captaincy after eight years.

Gladiators owner Nadeem Umar said in a special conversation with Geo News that Sarfaraz Ahmed wants to take a break from the captaincy of the team himself. Coach Shane Watson will decide who the new captain will be after consulting team management.

According to Geo sources, it is believed that Rilley Rossow or Saud Shakeel is being considered to replace him as the captain, and the decision will be taken in the next two to four days.

Quetta Gladiators have also replaced coach Moin Khan after eight years. He has been made the team director while Shane Watson has been given coaching duties.

Nadeem Umar added that the old family of Quetta Gladiators has started coming together again, with team mentor Sir Viv Richards joining the team next week. “We wish Kevin Pietersen also comes in some role with Quetta Gladiators,” he said.

PSL franchise Quetta Gladiators won the 2019 title under the captaincy of Sarfraz Ahmed, while the team has played the final in 2016 and 2017.

Sarfraz and Saud Shakeel get into an argument during practice session

Saud Shakeel, the middle-order batsman of the national cricket team, got into an argument with Sarfaraz Ahmed during a training session in Australia. A video of the two having a minor clash has become the center of attention of users on social media.

It can be seen in the video that Saud Shakeel asks Sarfaraz Ahmed “How long will I continue to work for you,” to which Sarfraz replies, “You are of no use to me, I have never instructed you to do anything.”

Sarfaraz then turns around, while Saud walks a short distance away.

  • Why was Shan Masood preferred over Rizwan and Sarfraz for captaincy?

Why was Shan Masood preferred over Rizwan and Sarfraz for captaincy?

Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam resigned as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team from all three formats (ODI Test & T20) on November 15.

His resignation followed heavy criticism from fans and former cricketers after Pakistan’s poor performance in the ODI World Cup 2023. The team was not successful in reaching the semi-finals, ending their World Cup journey at the fifth spot.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced Shan Masood as the Test Captain while left-arm pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi became the T20 captain.

The decision to make Shaheen captain of the T20s has been accepted more easily by the general public after he proved himself a competitive captain in the last two seasons of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). His team, Lahore Qalanders, had the unenviable record of being eliminated every time in the group stage in earlier seasons. However, under Afridi, they won two trophies.

Now the question arises as to why Shan Masood was picked captain in the Test format.

Fans believe there were better options in the team like wicketkeeper-batsman Muhammad Rizwan and Sarfraz Ahmed, who led Pakistan to the Champions Trophy under the captaincy in 2017. The team won 11 consecutive T20 series under his captaincy.

Muhammad Rizwan is also a consistent player in all formats, with a better average and strike rate than Shan’s in all three formats.

Here is the all-time performance of Rizwan, Sarfraz, and Shan in test format (International).

Here is all time performance of these three players in all formats (International).

    Sarfraz Ahmed

If the PCB must choose a captain on the player’s performance, then Rizwan must be the captain instead of Shan. But if they are picking a captain because he can speak good English or whatever, then our cricket will never improve, analysts and fans gave said.

In the past, every time Pakistan lost in any tournament, captains, coaches, and selectors were changed without a positive outcome.

Pakistan is set to play a three-match test series against Australia starting from December 14.

The new chief selector Wahab Riaz picked Imam-ul-Haq in the batting lineup despite the batter totally failing during the Asia Cup and World Cup 2023 campaign, while he didn’t select Sahib Zada Farhan by saying that “no place is left in the team”, effectively sidelining a very good right-handed batsman.

They also didn’t pick Muhammad Abbas who took 90 wickets in 25 test matches.

The need of the hour is the selection of captain, coach, or selector, should be on merit, otherwise, we cannot change our system.

  • Throwback: Did Rohit Sharma want to become coach of Pakistan’s cricket team?

Throwback: Did Rohit Sharma want to become coach of Pakistan’s cricket team?

From wanting to become Pakistan’s cricket team coach to losing against Pakistan, it’s been a long road for Rohit Sharma.

After Pakistan’s thumping victory against India, an odd video of Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma surfaced on social media.

In the video, the reporter asked Rohit, “What would you suggest to Pakistani batsmen so that they come out of this crisis?” Pakistan had just been comprehensively defeated in World Cup 2019 by arch rivals India.

To this, Sharma sarcastically responded by saying, “If I ever become the coach of Pakistan’s team, I will tell them”.

On September 4, Pakistan won against India by five wickets in a do-or-die match of the Asia Cup 2022. Sharma scored 28 runs. For Pakistan, Shadab Khan picked up two wickets for 31 runs, while Mohammad Hasnain, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah and Muhammad Nawaz took a wicket each.

Prior to this, in another India vs Pakistan match which was played on August 28, Sharma got out after scoring only 12 runs.

In yesterday’s (September 8) match against Afghanistan, Indian cricketer KL Rahul stepped in as captain for the toss. He said that Sharma “wants to take a break”.

Last year, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named Rohit Sharma as the new One Day International (ODI) captain of the Indian cricket team. He took over from his predecessor, batting maestro, Virat Kohli.
