    3,500 schools forced to shut down with shortage of teachers in Balochistan

    More than 3,500 schools in Balochistan have been shut down due to a shortage of teachers, the provincial education department has revealed in a written reply to a question posed by a Balochistan Assembly member.

    Balochistan education department also said that 542 schools have been closed since the new government led by Sarfraz Bugti in February came to power.

    Since then, the total number of non-functional schools for both boys and girls have jumped to 3,694 in all 35 district of the province.

    Currently, there are 15,096 government schools in the province, with a total of 48,841 teachers.

    The top seven districts with the highest number of non-functional schools are as follows:

    Pishin (254)

    Khuzdar (251)

    Kalat (179)

    Qila Saifullah (179)

    Barkhan (174)

    Awaran (161)

    Quetta (152)

    The document also sheds light on the closure of 13 schools in Dera Bugti, the hometown of Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, due to a shortage of academic staff.

    A shortage of 16,000 teachers is affecting the educational structure of the province.

    The government has made efforts to fill the vacant posts and started the recruitment of 9,496 teachers but the gap is still intact.

    Notably, the reply by the education departement could not be presented in the house as the questioner was absent from the session, and the query was deferred till the next meeting.

    Organisation Chairman Balaach Qadir Baloch blames business and administrative corruption, poor planning and a culture of favouritism as the reasons behind the current state of the education system.

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senior leader Qamar Zaman Kaira has denied media reports that his party will join a coalition government, terming them “baseless.”

    Rumors about PPP joining the treasury benches emerged after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ahsan Iqbal’s meetings with Kaira and Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti.

    Kaira claimed while talking to Geo News that he met with Ahsan Iqbal and discussed his constituency’s developmental projects.

    “I did not discuss anything about joining the government with Ahsan Iqbal,” Kaira said.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has decided to extend the federal cabinet after the budget and invited Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) once again to join the cabinet, The News reported on Wednesday.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior political leaders and members of allied parties will be included in the extended cabinet.

    Shehbaz Sharif has started working on enlisting new cabinet members, inviting PPP to join the government to work together for the betterment of the country.

    PML-N has given the task to its senior leader, Ahsan Iqbal. He as already talked to Chief Minister Balochistan, Sarfraz Bugti and PPP’s trusted leader Qamar Zaman Kaira.

    After the elections, PPP decided against becoming part of the cabinet.

    However, the party does hold constitutional and parliamentary posts.

    Fourteen members of the Balochistan cabinet took oath today in a ceremony held at the Governor’s House in Quetta.

    Those who took the oath include Sadiq Umrani, Ali Madad Jattak, Zahoor Buledi, Noor Muhammad Dumar, Sardar Faisal Jamali, Sarfraz Domki, Abdul Rehman Khetran, Saleem Khosa, Asim Kurd Gello, Bakht Kakar, Tariq Magsi, Shoaib Nosherwani, Raheel Durrani, and Zia Langau.

    On March 2, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sardar Sarfraz Bugti took oath as the Chief Minister (CM) of Balochistan.

    PPP’s Sarfraz Bugti elected CM Balochistan unopposed

    Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sarfraz Bugti was elected on Saturday as the unopposed leader of the house in the Balochistan Assembly. The newly-elected chief minister got 41 votes.

    Bugti will take the oath today, with the swearing-in ceremony to be held at the Governor House at 3 p.m, where Balochistan Governor Abdul Wali Kakar will administer the oath.

    Sarfraz Bugti’s nomination was announced in the Balochistan Assembly’s session today.

    The former federal minister submitted his nomination papers after instructions from PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardrai and co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

    He is also supported by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, including Nawab Sanaullah Khan Zehri and Sardar Sarfaraz Chakar Domki.

    Sarfraz Bugti, former interim interior minister, sent his resignation to caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on December 13, which was accepted Friday night.

    He cited personal reasons for stepping down from his position.

    Interior Ministry spokesperson Qadir Yar Tawana confirmed the report on Friday when contacted for the version of the ministry by Geo News.

    Close aides of Bugti said he had decided to resign from the office about two months ago to take part in the upcoming general elections. His resignation was accepted hours before the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced the schedule of the general elections in 2024.

    As per sources of Geo News, Sarfaraz Bugti resigned to contest the election on a Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N)’s ticket.
    They said he was expected to call on the PML-N leadership in a few days.

    He is currently associated with the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).

    Bugti had been elected as a senator from Balochistan in 2021.

    The 42-year-old had previously served as interior minister for Balochistan after winning a seat in 2013 as an independent candidate, but later joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

    In a related development, Balochistan caretaker Minister for Sports and Culture, Nawabzada Jamal Raisani and Adviser to the Chief Minister on Mines and Minerals, Mir Umair Muhammad Hasni, also resigned from the interim provincial cabinet on Friday.

    Sarfraz Bugti refuses to provide details of 14 bombing attacks by Afghans

    Caretaker government officials are not providing any information to support their claim that Afghan nationals were involved in 14 out of 24 suicide bombing attacks in Pakistan in 2023, Geo has reported.

    Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti disclosed on October 3 that from January until October, Pakistan has witnessed 24 suicide bombing attacks.

    “Of those 24 bombings, 14 have been carried out by Afghan nationals,” he added. “Afghan people attacked us. This includes the Peshawar mosque bombings and the one in Qilla Saifullah and Hangu, amongst others.”

    Sarfraz Bugti also claimed that the government has all the essential proof.

    “Afghan nationals are involved in the attacks on us. We have evidence. We have evidence of everything,” he stated.

    Sarfraz Bugti repeated his claim in multiple interviews with both international and Pakistani news channels.

    The interim government used these metrics to order all undocumented immigrants, as well as 1.73 million Afghan nationals, to leave the country or face deportation.

    Earlier last week, Sarfraz Bugti told Dawn TV that almost 400,000 Afghans have left Pakistan so far.

    Last month, Geo Fact Check reached out to the interior minister and asked for evidence of the involvement of Afghan nationals in suicide bombing attacks, but the interior minister hasn’t responded back until now.

    Caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Bugti, while addressing the issue of missing persons in Pakistan, stated that the assemblies in the country represent “legitimate voices” for separatists expressing their perspectives.

    During an interview with DawnNewsTV program Doosra Rukh, Bugti delved into the complexities of missing persons cases, shedding light on the challenges faced in resolving them.

    Bugti’s comments come against the backdrop of an ongoing missing persons case being heard by the Islamabad High Court.

    On November 29, the court issued a warning that a case might be filed against the caretaker prime minister and others if they did not facilitate the reunion of missing Baloch students with their families.

    He also emphasized the delicate nature of the missing person issue, stating, “We have a commission on this matter, and it has resolved around 85 per cent of cases.”

    The commission was established in 2011 to trace missing persons and fix responsibility on the individuals or organizations responsible for it.

    In the interview aired on Friday, Minister Bugti pointed out the fine line between “enforced disappearances and self-disappearance”, highlighting that the commission had encountered cases with surprising details.

    “There were cases wherein people left their homes after a domestic dispute, and it transpired weeks later that they had left home themselves.”

    He also noted instances where individuals lost their lives in “encounters” with security forces.

    Minister added, “Then there are cases in which suspects are absconders required by a court, and their families submit pleas claiming their family member as missing to avoid court [action].”

    He remarked that such cases had been reported and documented.

    The caretaker Premier has disclosed the value of 10 tola gold at 80 thousand rupees; he also has more than 22 million rupees in two banks. The caretaker prime minister has disclosed the value of his house furniture at four lakh rupees.

    The caretaker finance minister, Shamshad Akhtar, has revealed the price of a house in Karachi DHA Phase 6 as four million and a plot in DHA worth Rs25,000.

    Shamshad Akhtar has shares worth more than three lakh rupees in Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

    The caretaker finance minister has 39 lakh 24 thousand rupees in banks, while his furniture is worth two lakh rupees.

    According to the details of the assets revealed by caretaker interior minister Sarfaraz Bugti, he owns a two-kanal house in Multan worth one crore, while he also owns a flat worth Rs 2.5 million in Multan United Mall. The caretaker interior minister has a house worth three crore and 12 lakh in Islamabad and a plot worth one crore in Quetta.
    Sarfaraz Bugti has Rs 67 lakh 98 thousand in cash, while his account has Rs 635,000. The value of his furniture is Rs 68 lakh. Sarfaraz Bugti has also declared 90 camels, 8,870 sheep, 4060 goats, 400 cows, 80 calves, and 86 buffaloes among his assets; his livestock is worth six crore and 97 lakhs.

    According to the document, the caretaker federal minister of information, Murtaza Solangi, is the owner of assets worth two crore and 32 lakh rupees. Solangi has one crore, 27 lakh rupees, while his wife owns two houses in Islamabad worth 31 lakh rupees besides 18 lakh cash.

    As the general elections approach nearer, caretaker federal Interior Minister, Sarfraz Bugti, has stated that the interim government is in contact with all political parties, and there are “no favorites.”

    While talking in Shehzad Iqbal’s programme ‘Naya Pakistan’, the security Czar said that the caretaker government is also in contact with Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), not just with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

    “It is our [caretaker government’s] responsibility to assist the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) [in the electoral process],” he mentioned while saying that the caretaker government just obeyed the directions given by electoral authorities regarding posting and transferring of officers and bureaucrats.

    “Whatever the ECP’s directions are, we will abide by it,” he added.

    ECP has directed the caretaker government to transfer Inspector General Police (IG) Islamabad.

    “The IG Islamabad is performing well […] It is my wish that he continues to work [as federal capital’s police chief],” the security czar said while emphasizing that federal government will follow ECP’s directives regarding IG’s transfer.

    The ECP announced on September 21 that general elections will be conducted in the last week of January 2024.
