‘September sitamgar hoga’: Sheikh Rasheed announces Khan’s march in Islamabad

Former interior minister and Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed said on Sunday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan will give a call to his supporters to march towards Islamabad once the flood situation eases down.

Rasheed took to his Twitter handle and warned: “Sitambar Sitamgar ho ga (September will be cruel)”.

The former federal minister pointed out that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has made yet another agreement of Rs608 billion with the government. “First they robbed the treasury and now the people’s pockets”, he said.

“Floods have opened the eyes of the people of Sindh, the floods have destroyed the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) reputation. How will other countries give aid when the people of the country refuse to give money to money launderers?”

He said that the people can not bear the burden of increasing petrol and power prices, yet the “government continues to raise them”.

In a series of tweets, he said that IMF knows that there is a weak majority of the government and people can come to the streets.

“The time is not far when factories and shops will be closed, people will be on the streets”, he warned again while adding that floods have become a matter of “political point scoring”.

Rasheed’s statement came a day after Imran Khan warned the government to stop the “persecution” of his party workers otherwise he will again march on Islamabad.

He said the government would have “no place to hide” in the event he comes to Islamabad.

Last week, Khan was given pre-arrest bail in the terror case filed against him for threatening Additional District and Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry and senior police officers at a public rally, shortly after he appeared before an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad.

The ATC accepted the former premier’s bail plea against a surety of Rs100,000, stopping the police from arresting Khan till September 1.

Khan appeared in the ATC in person where Judge Raja Jawwad Abbas heard his plea.

PIA to fly to European countries once again as EU decides to lift ban

The ban imposed by the European Union (EU) on Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight operations is expected to be lifted soon, local media reported quoting the country’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) official.

The ban had been imposed following the crash of a PIA aircraft in May last year, which resulted in the deaths of 97 passengers and crew.

An International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audit team that had visited to undertake a safety audit of the aviation authority completed the process on December 10. Its final report will be released in a few weeks and shared publicly, The News reported.

According to The News, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) had extended travel restrictions imposed on PIA in April for an indefinite period and directed the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) to get its safety audit done by ICAO scheduled in July.

In its January 4 letter to DG CAA Khaqan Murtaza, ICAO’s Deputy Director Denis Guindon wrote that the committee conducted the audit in December 2021 and “determined that the actions taken by Pakistan had successfully resolved SSC (Significant Safety Concern).”

“I wish to refer to the Significant Safety Concern (SSC/PEL-01/09-2020/PAK refers) that was issued to Pakistan on September 18, 2020, as well as the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) Continuous Monitoring Approach (CMA) audit that was conducted by an ICAO team in Pakistan from 29 November to 10 December 2021.”

He further said that until the CAA received the approval, PIA would not be able to resume flight operations to the EU.

“In accordance with the USOAP SSC process, […] the ICAO SSC Validation Committee reviewed the actions and relevant evidence validated in Pakistan. The Committee determined that the actions taken by Pakistan had successfully resolved SSC,” the letter stated.

‘Women are still the victims of war’: Angelina Jolie opens up about violence against women

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie talked about the violence against women act (VAWA).

She had a meeting with politician Cori Bush speaking about domestic violence and giving some steps to cure it.

Reflecting on their meeting Bush tweeted, “I’m forever grateful to get to work in partnership with such strong women across the country in our movement to end domestic violence.”

“As a survivor myself, this fight is personal,” the Tweet read.

She also expressed gratitude towards Jolie while adding, “Thank you to Angelina Jolie for your leadership to put an end to violence against women.”

The 46 year old actor on her meeting at Capitol hill in September, she upheld the cause of the act and consistently expressed her feeling for children’s better health.

Earlier during her speech at the Eternals press meet, she stated: “I am thinking tonight of all the women who are bringing us through the pandemic: the scientists, the doctors, nurses… so many others who are showing us what strength and sacrifice are and whose contribution transcends borders.”

She stated in 2019 that the world “will remain stuck in a cycle of violence and conflicts” as long as nations continue to put almost every other issue ahead of women’s equality, rights and participation.

Jolie, who is a special envoy for the U.N. refugee agency, added in a keynote address to a ministerial meeting on U.N. peacekeeping that “denying half a population representation in peace negotiations or in government is not the route to long-term stability.”

There are many examples around the world of successful and inspiring women, she said, “but women and girls are still the majority of the victims of war,” over half the world’s refugees, and “the vast majority” of victims of rape and sexual violence.
