  • Shaan says Noor Jehan’s house should be converted into a museum, Vasay Chaudhry disagrees

Shaan has a new suggestion for the government.

Responding to the news which stated that the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to allocate Rs50 million to renovate and restore the Kapoor Haveli and other historical buildings in Peshawar, Shaan remarked that the same should be done with Madam Noor Jehan’s house.

“Madam Noor Jahan’s house has become a plaza,” said Shaan. “Sad, our legends deserve it to.”

However, Vasay Chaudhry disagreed with Shaan’s suggestion saying that the legendary singer sold it out of her “own will”.

Shaan then said that the government should have bought her house and converted it into a museum. In response, Vasay said that the government honoured her in her lifetime and “buying her house (especially when she was not even in the need for money) doesn’t make sense, given the economic situation of our country.”

Shaan later said that he believes that Madam Noor Jehan, Mehdi Hassan and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan all should be given the same honour and that they are inspirational people.

It is being assumed that Shaan is referring to the house which was located in Liberty, Lahore. Noor Jehan reportedly sold that in 1997 to finance her treatment in the United States.

Shaan stood up in defence of the official and said that he stands with him “for keeping the future of Pakistan secure and prosperous”. Shaan received a lot of flak for his comments following which he hit out at “bikay huway Twitterbaz (sold-out Twitterati)” for spreading paid propaganda.

Later Shaan engaged with Twitter users and strongly defended the Pakistan Army and the PTI-led government.

When someone suggested he leave the film industry and go fight on the border, Shaan replied: “My AK47 is my camera”.

Ending his arguments, Shaan requested his followers to also fight against the dangers that lurk.

This is not the first time Shaan has been embroiled in a debate on social media. Earlier, the actor had sparked controversy after he criticised the government for airing Turkish historical series Diriliş: Ertuğrul on PTV.

Farhan Saeed celebrates the living legends of Pakistan

Following the deaths of legends Sabiha Khanum and Tariq Aziz, Farhan Saeed has taken the initiative to celebrate and honour the living legends of Pakistan. The actor-singer also requested his followers to join him in honouring them for their services to the country.

“2020 has been revelatory for so many reasons. A pandemic has pushed the world to its limits. Racial differences have sparked outrage and so many revered innocent souls have left us,” said the singer.

Remembering those who passed away, Farhan said, “In this uncertain age, we Pakistanis must not waste time in appreciating the Living Legends among us.”

He added: “I wish to honour their lives and cherish their presence among us, and I wish to express gratitude for sharing this world with someone of their stature.”

Saeed has so far honoured four legends including Qavi Khan, Javed Miandad, Abida Parveen and Umer Sharif.

Writing about Qavi Khan, Farhan said: “As my first tribute to the #LivingLegends of Pakistan, I pay homage to Qavi Khan sahab, the legendary actor par excellence who has been serving the country since 1952.”

“I recently had the privilege of sharing the screen with him – both on television as well as in a film. Anyone who has worked with Qavi sahab would know his demeanour only commands the utmost respect. He is an institution,” he continued.

Farhan added: “He motivates younger actors by encouraging them to push the bar with each performance. To encourage us, Qavi sahab always tells us, we are better at what we do than his generation was. His wealth of experience is a guide book for those who have only just recently joined the industry.”

Next Farhan, celebrated Abida Parveen, whose soulful voice has touched hearts across the world.

“Abida Parveen is globally recognised as an iconic representation of the Sufi genre. Her soul-stirring voice and melodies have long had listeners across the globe in absolute awe,” wrote the singer, adding: “As a person, Abida Ji embodies the very essence of Sufism. The few times I have had a chance to meet with her, I have witnessed first hand her absolute humility and respect for others.”

“Abida Ji is undoubtedly a source of pride and inspiration for every Pakistani. She has paved the way for generations to come and pursue their journey. I too take inspiration from her unmatched passion – her work has always been a major source of inspiration and motivation for me.”

Farhan then paid a rich tribute to comedian Umer Sharif, describing him as “an absolute showman for whom no specific place or audience is required to exhibit the versatility of his craft. He will undoubted have you laughing hysterically, anywhere and everywhere you meet him.”

“I can’t forget his very gracious advice: “Yeh log hain, tou hum hain – inko kabhi inkaar nahi karna“. His words have since been etched in my memory,” said Saeed.

Farhan’s latest tribute was to “legendary cricketer extraordinaire – the one and only, Javed Miandad sahab“.

“I am grateful for the privilege of knowing Javed sahab off the pitch. He is friends with an uncle and is undoubtedly one of the most down to earth human beings I have known. He is a true friend and showers love and affection upon everyone around him,” said Farhan.

Javed sahab, aap sada khush rahain, salaamat rahain, aabaad rahain. Pakistan kay liyay aap ki khidmaat ka bayhad shukriya.”

Miandad, later, thanked Farhan for his efforts.

Earlier, Yasir Hussain and Shaan also honoured legends and thanked them for their services.

When someone questioned if he took a u-turn, Shaan said that he watched the series on Netflix.

To put things into perspective, it can be understood that Shaan is not against the series but is in fact against PTV’s decision to air the series as evident from the tweets below. The actor asserted that he is not against the drama but doesn’t understand why PTV charges a hefty amount to show foreign products.

Shaan had also appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan to support the entertainment industry and stop cultural imports like these. It is pertinent to mention here that Shaan was also very critical of Bollywood films being released in Pakistan and had always voiced his dissent against them.

Meanwhile, in response to another user’s question on whether he will make a series like Ertuğrul, Shaan said that it costs a lot to make one.

Diriliş: Ertuğrul is being aired on PTV on the recommendation of Prime Minister Imran Khan. Set in 13th century Anatolia and based on the struggle of Ertuğrul Gazi, father of Osman I – the founder of the Ottoman dynasty, Diriliş: Ertuğrul has been trending in the country ever since its first episode aired on the first of Ramzan. According to PTV, 133.38 million people have watched the drama series from April 25- May 14. The debate around the airing of Diriliş: Ertuğrul doesn’t seem to end.

Meanwhile there are some actors who have praised the series.

Turkish historic drama series Diriliş: Ertuğrul has been trending ever since its first episode aired on PTV Home. Pakistanis are loving the drama series and it has become a sensation in the country to the point that PTV is now aiming to set a new record with the series.

And the debate on Diriliş: Ertuğrul continues.

While Pakistanis enjoy the Turkish series in Urdu on their TV screens, Reema has voiced her criticism against the government’s decision to air the drama on PTV. The actor supported her colleague Shaan’s comments and said that the Turkish series should not be aired on “our national channel”. Shaan had earlier remarked that the state-owned channel should we working towards uplifting the local entertainment industry and should not be spending money on imports. In response to Shaan’s comments, Senator Faisal Javed Khan had clarified that Ertuğrul was a gift to Pakistan from the President of Turkey.

While speaking on her Ramzan transmission, the actor said, “Our artists have raised their voice [against its airing]. Why is foreign content being aired on national television?”

“When you have plenty of local content and your artists are sitting at home, why is there a need to spend money and promote foreign content,” questioned Reema, adding, “It really hurts us. Because we’re the one paying taxes, not foreign artists.”

Shaan nay haq ki awaaz uthayi hai.”

Reema’s guests Madiha Maqvi and Faisal Subzwari agreed with her comments and said that the government should promote local artists.

Replying to a tweet by Senator Faisal Javed Khan, Shaan said, “Try to find our own history and it’s heroes.”

Following Shaan’s comments, people jumped in to support PTV’s decision, but Shaan was not having any of it.

Shaan stood by his stance and asserted that PTV should fund projects of such magnitude, instead of spending money acquiring them.

When the debate got more heated, Shaan clarified that he is not against Turkish dramas but wants the government to support local content.

Shaan ended the debate by appealing to Prime Minister Imran Khan to support the entertainment industry and stop cultural imports like these. It is pertinent to mention here that Shaan was also very critical of Bollywood films being released in Pakistan and had always voiced his dissent against them.

Shaan’s latest venture Zarrar, which has been in the works for a few years now, was expected to hit cinemas this year but due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is likely that its release will be affected.

  • Shaan asks ‘born-again politician’ Jawad Ahmad to support PM Khan

Renowned actor Shaan and singer Jawad Ahmed got into a Twitter feud which started with Shaan asking Jawad to put aside his political differences and work with Prime Minister Imran Khan in these testing times; and ended with Shaan referring to Jawad as a ‘born-again politician’ and taking a jibe at the fact that his party won no seats in the 2018 General Elections.

It all started when Jawad criticised PM Imran Khan for playing politics with the Sindh Government and caring more about the Corona Tigers than his people. Shaan, who has always vocally supported PM Khan and his initiatives, responded, “Thank God he is not corrupt. Where were you when we had corrupt people in power?”

Shaan further said that the PM is struggling and that everyone should play their part in helping the country rise.

At that point, Jawad did not directly respond to the actor but instead shared an old tweet in which he had explained why he criticises PM Khan and not those before him.

While Jawad did not responds further, Shaan continued to defend PM Khan and his policies under Jawad’s tweet.

Later, Jawad decided to respond to Shaan’s questions in a video message.

“I usually don’t respond to such comments and I really respect everyone from the showbiz industry, but the questions he raised require me to answer him,” Jawad said in the video. “When he asked me where I was when there was corruption, so I was exactly where you were. I was singing, I was in the industry.”

He further said that he was offered a position in PTI in 2013 which he refused.

“In 2018, I contested in elections. I’m a part of the said politics, therefore I can critique. Imran Khan is the Prime Minister, I have a right to criticise him.”

In response to Jawad’s video, Shaan wrote, “Dear Jawad, it’s good to know that you are a born again politician but the 2018 elections show differently. Brother, you need to build more trust on people so they would listen, believe and vote for you. IK is PM try working with him to build Pakistan together.”

Shaan did not end his support there. He further tweeted:

But in the end he left his followers with some very profound words: “We have many leaders but only one hope. Pakistan – land of the pure.”
