  • Wires cut to stop Nawaz Sharif’s speech, claim conference organisers

Wires cut to stop Nawaz Sharif’s speech, claim conference organisers

The organisers of the Asma Jahangir Conference 2021 condemned the alleged “muzzling” of former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s speech on Sunday, reports Dawn.

Soon after Sharif’s video link address began, internet services at the venue [Avari Hotel Lahore] were reportedly suspended.

“Lines kaat dee gai hain [lines were cut],” the organisers claimed while pointing out the government’s role in muzzling the speech of Nawaz.

Munizae Jahangir, Asma’s daughter, confirmed that broadband internet services and mobile internet had been suspended soon after Nawaz began speaking.

The official statement released by the organisers said: “The organisers of the Asma Jahangir Conference regret the state’s highhandedness after it blocked the three-time elected former PM’s speech at the AJCONF2021 closing ceremony on Nov 21, 2021.”

“The organisers of Asma Jahangir Conference 2021, which include the Supreme Court Bar Association, Pakistan Bar Council, and the AGHS, strongly condemn this act and consider it an onslaught on the freedom of expression,” they added.

After the video call was cut off, the organisers arranged for a telephonic address by Nawaz.

The President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Ahsan Bhoon appeared in Geo News programme ‘Naya Pakistan with Shahzad Iqbal’ and said that there was no need to tell judges [present at the conference] about Sharif’s closing ceremony speech.

While replying to the question if judges know about the former PM’s address and did they have any objection over it, Bhoon said, “Why would there be any objection? Neither were they [judges] co-hosting nor did they have to converse with him.”

However, government officials reacted to Nawaz speaking at the conference.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said he had been invited to the event, but he had been informed that “the conference will be closed with the speech of an absconding convict; this is obviously tantamount to ridiculing the country and the Constitution, which is why I declined to participate in the conference.”

Energy Minister Hammad Azhar tweeted: “Think positive; Perhaps the idea was to focus on [the] human rights of absconders..”

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior and Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar, meanwhile, said, “Having an absconder and convict speak at a conference where the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) and senior judges of the superior judiciary and members of Bar have spoken creates serious doubts on [the] impartiality of organisers but also makes it clear that honourable judges should remain clear of such politicised gatherings.”

The actress said: “Who told you that?” She answered no for both the political leaders.

She added: “I think both are equal. It depends on which of them makes you laugh more. I think we will not get anything from politicians or the government in any way. I’m not very hopeful.”

She then went on to choose Bilawal as the leader with funnier speeches amongst the two. Maria also gave suggestions to Prime Minister Imran Khan, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former President Asif Ali Zardari.

‘Match fixers should not be allowed to play again’: Abdul Razzaq

Former cricketer Abdul Razzaq has said in an interview that match fixers should not be allowed to play for their teams again.

On Geo News show, ‘Jashan-e-Cricket’, Shahzad Iqbal questioned if it is true that Razzaq had noticed Salman Butt’s incompetent performance in one of the matches, which was also mentioned in Shahid Afridi’s book.

Razzaq said: “Shahid Afridi wrote in his book quoting Salman Butt, taking my name, I said that but there was no such thing. I said that in heat of the moment because I observed something, I just had some doubts,” added the all-rounder.

Former cricketer and analyst, Sikandar Bakht asked Razzaq directly if the players who were involved in match-fixing should be allowed to play again. “No, in my point of view, they should not come back,” said Razzaq.

Talking about captaincy, the host asked Razzaq why he was not given the captaincy in the national cricket team and why did the management not consider him for this role.

Replying to Shahzad, he said: “It is a pity not to get the captaincy of the national cricket team even today because an all-rounder is a good captain.”

  • VIDEO: ‘Please keep your personal matters to yourself,’ journalist tells Gill after being called ‘second wife’

Journalist Shahzad Iqbal has told Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan’s aide Dr Shahbaz Gill to “keep personal matters to himself” after the latter called Iqbal his “second wife” on live TV.

As per the details, Gill, along with Dr Munir Baloch of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) besides businessman and ruling party loyalist Abdul Qadir, was talking to Iqbal on Geo News’ “Naya Pakistan” show when the premier’s aide was asked a question regarding Senate tickets.

“Babar Yousafzai of your own party has accused Baloch of peddling money to be awarded a Senate ticket,” Iqbal said, to which Gill responded by saying it was a baseless allegation in absence of evidence.

The anchor went on to say it would’ve been different had it been someone from the opposition leveling the accusations.

“It is his [Yousafzai] right,” Gill said and accused Iqbal of being biased against the government, mentioning instances when the journalist hadn’t conducted shows on internal rifts during the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) regimes.

This was followed by Iqbal taking Gill head-on and warning him against leveling accusations. “Just say you don’t want to answer if you don’t like the question. But don’t assume what I did or didn’t do.”

“You fight and shout a lot…”

“Because this isn’t the right behaviour…”

“It feels like you’re my second wife who is upset with me for prioritising my first wife,” Gill said.

    WATCH VIDEO:

“Please keep your personal matters to yourself,” Iqbal hit back.

The two then went on to cut each other off.

It merits a mention that PTI central parliamentary board, headed by PM Imran, has withdrawn the party ticket awarded to business tycoon Abdul Qadir in Balochistan for the Senate election after strong opposition from the PTI provincial leadership and zonal heads.

  • ‘Vijay Mallya sent back’: Fawad’s blunder on Nawaz’s extradition called out on air

‘Vijay Mallya sent back’: Fawad’s blunder on Nawaz’s extradition called out on air

A blunder by Federal Minister for Science & Technology Fawad Chaudhry was called out by the host of the show he had appeared on to talk about the extradition of deposed prime minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif, who was last year allowed by the government to travel abroad to seek medical treatment despite his conviction in corruption cases.

As per the details, Fawad, who was speaking to journalist Shahzad Iqbal during the latter’s show on Geo News, was asked if the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was hopeful that its efforts to get Nawaz extradited would bear fruit.

“India is a prominent power with influence and you agree. But we have the example of Indian businessman Vijay Mallya who is accused of corruption worth Rs90 billion and has been convicted in the contempt case against him. They [Indian authorities] have time and again been requesting the British authorities to extradite Vijay Mallya but to no avail,” Iqbal said.

Indian businessman and former lawmaker Mallya is the subject of an extradition effort by New Delhi to bring him back from the UK to face charges of financial crimes in India. Mallya is a former owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore cricket team. He is also one of the four prominent business magnates of India on the lives of which the 2020 Netflix original documentary web-series “Bad Boy Billionaires” focuses.

Citing another example, the journalist spoke of former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, who too was allowed to seek treatment abroad despite his conviction in a grenade attack case from 2004 on top of financial crimes accusations, and was never sent back by the UK regardless of Bangladeshi authorities’ requests.

“You are absolutely right but Vijay Mallya was recently extradited. What you are saying is right and that was why I was against permitting Nawaz to travel abroad,” Fawad said in response to Iqbal who appeared shocked over the minister’s ill-informed claim regarding the Indian businessman’s extradition.

“I haven’t read anything about Vijay Mallya’s extradition. The case is in the Supreme Court. Who told you this?” the journalist asked.

Attempting to brush it off, Fawad said he had read “something somewhere” and thought Mallya had been extradited, and told the journalist to take a look, over which Iqbal requested the minister to share the source with him. “I will also read it because as far as I know, Vijay Mallya has not yet been extradited.”

    WATCH VIDEO:

The minister’s err moment was followed by both Iqbal and Fawad telling each other to “Google it”.

Here’s what The Current discovered when we Googled it:

“The Indian government has been informed that there is a ‘confidential legal matter’ without whose resolution the extradition of embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya is not possible to India from Britain, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday, adding that India is not a party to that matter. The MEA also said that Mallya’s avenues for appeal against extradition have already been exhausted and that India is in touch with Britain on the issue of his extradition to India,” reads an early October report by the Deccan Chronicle.

The same has been reported by multiple Indian media organisations, including dailies such as the Hindustan Times and The Hindu.
