Federal ministers hold Sindh responsible for food inflation

The federal government on Friday criticised the Sindh government for ‘poor governance’ with ministers holding it responsible for food inflation in the country, reports Dawn.

The criticism came from the government after Prime Minister Imran Khan had claimed the Centre would uplift 14 districts under the Rs444 billion Sindh Development Plan.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry blamed the Sindh government for rising food inflation in the country, alleging that the “Sindh government has left the people of the province at the mercy of mafias”.

He said when sugar price went up to Rs150 per kilo, the Sindh government stopped supplying sugar cane to mills and later blocked stocks of sugar from reaching the markets. He said prices of food and grocery items were still higher in Sindh as compared to other provinces.

However, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which rules Sindh, slammed the federal government for criticising the provincial government.

PPP spokesman Faisal Karim Kundi asked: “Why does Imran Khan worry so much about Sindh?”

He claimed that Sindh was the only province where free treatment was being given for cancer, heart ailments, liver and kidney ailments.

“If nothing is being done in Sindh, then why do people from across the country travel to Sindh to avail free medical treatment,” he questioned.

  • SHC allows children of single parents to get CNIC without father’s information

SHC allows children of single parents to get CNIC without father’s information

In a ruling, the Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) to issue Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) to a woman who didn’t know about her father’s whereabouts, reports Samaa.

Rubina was brought up by a single mother as her father had left the family many years ago. The local court ordered NADRA to issue CNIC to Rubina based on her mother’s citizenship record. Her mother works in the Education Department.

When Rubina, who is specially-abled, turned 18 and went to a local NADRA office to obtain her CNIC, she was told that the card would not be issued unless she provides the record of both her parents.

“When I went to the NADRA office, they refused to issue me CNIC and asked to bring my father or any other guardian. Where could I have found my father, who left me and my mother when I was young?”

She filed a petition with the court, which resulted in a landmark verdict. In the past, many orphans in Pakistan have faced this problem regarding the issuance of CNIC.

Advocate Usman Farooq stated that the ruling would apply to similar cases and now the children with single parents would be able to get their CNICs after producing the record of only a single parent.

However, the school administration has maintained that the cameras were installed in the washrooms for “monitoring purposes”.

According to the Sindh Educational Department, “Hidden CCTV cameras were installed behind a sheet with holes in the area of the washbasins situated with the toilets of girls and boys/washrooms, so that one can easily watch the movements of male and female students and staff,” as per Dawn.

An inquiry committee of the inspection directorate later in the day served a notice to the school administration, asking its principal or a senior official to appear before the department on November 4.

However, no official from the school turned up in disregard of the orders.

After that, the Sindh Education Department on Friday suspended the registration of the said private school and asked its administration to furnish a show-cause notice.

Nazim Jokhio’s brother Azam, while talking to BBC Urdu’s Riaz Sohail, revealed: “I blindly trusted Jam Awais and took my brother Nazim to meet him and he [Jam] returned my brother in kafan (shroud).”

Jokhio, the youngest one of his siblings, was allegedly tortured to death for recording Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MPA Jam Awais’ hunting expedition of a highly rare bird species along with his Arab guests.

Azam told the media outlet that after repeated calls from Jam’s people, he asked his brother to delete the video. He said he was not “afraid”. After this, Jam’s manager reached their home and asked for Nazim.

“My brother had refused to go with him but I insisted,” he said while adding that he had been elected a member of the district council and he had confidence in them.

Upon reaching, Jam’s people started torturing Nazim with sticks and butts of the gun.

“I pleaded in front of him [Jam] and apologised but he didn’t listen and said that you have insulted my guests. They kept beating him and locked him in a room. They asked me to leave and come in the morning. At 5am, I got the news that they had beaten him to death”, Azam said.

MPA Sindh Assembly along with two suspects, Haider and Mir Ali, have been remanded to police custody for three days.

During the hearing, the investigation officer informed the court that the prime suspect had surrendered to the police. Later, the judge ordered to present a progress report in the case at the next hearing and granted a three-day remand to the police.

  • ‘Three sugar mills in Sindh were shut down, leading to an increase in the price of sugar to Rs140 per kg’: PM Khan

‘Three sugar mills in Sindh were shut down, leading to an increase in the price of sugar to Rs140 per kg’: PM Khan

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan during an address at a ceremony in Attock on Friday said that Sindh shut down three operational sugar mills, which contributed to an increase in the price of sugar.

“The price of sugar in Pakistan has hit Rs140 per kg. I inquired why this was so. I learned that three sugar mills in Sindh, which were operational, were shut down,” the prime minister said.

The prime minister went on to say that he subsequently learnt that due to the reduced supply, the sugar mills in Punjab began to hoard the commodity.

“I told the chief secretary that our law forbids hoarding and so if the sugar mills are doing so, we must retrieve the stock and bring it out to the market so the price drops.”

“We found out that since July, the sugar mills have obtained a stay order against the rule. And so our government was unable to do anything,” PM Imran Khan said.

“This is a gross injustice that the sugar mafia earns billions after having broken the backs of our people. And when the government moves to do something, they obtain stay orders,” he remarked.

PM Khan claimed that there was uproar in India as well over high petrol prices and Pakistan still had the cheapest petrol prices in the region.

“In India today, there is uproar as well [over petrol prices] and the petrol price per litre is Rs150 while it is Rs200 in Bangladesh. [On the other hand] it is the lowest in Pakistan at Rs146,” the premier said.

“The biggest [impact] of what happened was that the oil price first decreased and now in the last three months it has doubled […] when oil becomes expensive, then everything becomes expensive.”

“When there was inflation in the whole world then obviously Pakistan is in this same world and not in the heavens so we also had to be affected. As a result, we fully tried and are still trying to protect our people from this inflation.”

The prime minister’s comments come the same day as the government increased petroleum prices by up to Rs8.14 per litre with immediate effect to ensure the revival of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.
