    Sindh MPAs to be suspended over dog bites, says SHC

    A circuit bench of the Sindh High Court has come up with a rather novel solution to curb dog biting incidents in Sindh.

    According to Justice Aftab Ahmed, the lawmakers of the respective area will be suspended in case of a dog biting incidents.

    Responding to the judge’s remarks, the public prosecutor said that MPAs have nothing to do with dog biting incidents. To which the judge replied that it is the job of the MPAs to protect their constituents.

    The judge went on to add that the MPAs would also be barred from voting in the Senate election over the dog biting incidents. It also warned that the concerned officers would be penalised and their salaries would be suspended if such incidents continued to happen.

    During the hearing, the government officers also presented reports on which the court expressed discontent. The high court adjourned the hearing till March 16.

    In October, the SHC bench expressed displeasure over rising dog-bite incidents in the province and ordered that FIR be registered against the concerned municipal officer if any case would be reported.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmaker and leader of opposition in Sindh Assembly, Haleem Adil Sheikh, has killed a snake that appeared in his jail cell, the MPA’s spokesperson confirmed.

    “A poisonous snake appeared in the room of Haleem Adil Sheikh, which was pinpointed by a servant who went there to deliver breakfast,” Sheikh’s spokesperson Muhammad Ali Baloch said on Thursday.

    “After seeing the snake, Sheikh killed it,” Baloch said, adding that the presence of the snake in his boss’s room puts a question mark on the performance of Sindh police.

    He went on to say that conspiracies were being hatched against Sheikh as “police have become a slave to the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP)”.

    The statements were followed by Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Karachi Ghulam Nabi Memon seeking a report from authorities concerned regarding the appearance of the snake.

    AIG Memon telephoned DIG (CIA) Arif Hanif, ordered him to investigate the matter and submit a report at the earliest.

    Meanwhile, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi has sent the PTI leader to jail on judicial remand till February 25.

    The ATC was hearing the case related to aerial firing and disturbance during Karachi’s PS-88 by-election on February 16, in the aftermath of which Sheikh had been placed under police custody.

    Boy from Thar sets world record for fastest Periodic Table arrangement

    A Pakistani boy has set the world record for arranging the fastest periodic table. The existing record was two minutes and 42 seconds while the youngster from Thar arranged the table in one minute and 58 seconds.

    The school student, namely Rohan Khatwani, set the record at the Islamabad Science Festival. The event was arranged at the Pakistan National Council of Arts on February 13.

    In an official tweet, the government also congratulated Khatwani, saying that he had made the nation proud by setting the new world record.

    According to the details of the event, around 80 schools participated in the festival and displayed their projects.

    A range of innovative ideas, including walk-in sanitising stations, precautions against coronavirus, and myth-busting related to COVID-19 remedies, were also featured.

    Karachi-based fashion designer Wardha Saleem who designed Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari’s nikkah outfit has revealed that the jora took over 7000 hours to make.

    In a recent interview with BBC Urdu, the designer shared the process that went behind designing the gold outfit and also addressed rumours surrounding the dress.

    “She [Bakhtawar] was very clear what she wanted,” revealed Wardha, adding that the bride wanted to wear a colour combination similar to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s white and gold wedding dress but also wanted it to reflect her own personality.

    Addressing rumours of using gold and diamonds in the outfit, Wardah said: “Neither did we use a gold wire nor did we put in diamonds on this dress.”

    “It was made with locally sourced fine material that is available for any designer to use,” stated Wardha.

    The designer also revealed that 90 craftsmen were involved in making the dress and that it took over 7000 hours to complete because it all the embroidery was done with the hand.

    “If you calculate in normal working hours this goes to about 6 to 7 months,” said Wardha, adding that the craftsmen worked in double shifts of 24 hours, reducing the preparation time to two and a half months.

    Wardha further said that Bakhtawar was the dream bride as she was very cooperative and did not interfere in the process, adding that she had complete trust in her [Wardha].

    The designer also revealed that she also designed Aseefa Bhutto-Zardari’s outfits for Bakhtawar’s mehndi and reception.

    Meanwhile, Bakhtawar’s makeup artist Shamain also opened up about her nikkah look saying: “It was a pleasure to be the wedding makeup artist for the delightful Bakhtawar.”

    “Bakhtawar requested subtle and glowing looks, that felt very much in line with who she is. Getting to know Bakhtawar in the process, and her genuine love for art and culture, I was inspired to create a natural glowing look, which was complemented by sleek, modern hair- stylish and standout, like the lovely bride herself,” said Shamain further.

    Bakhtawar and Mahmood Choudhry tied the knot on January 29 in an intimate nikkah ceremony at Bilawal House. The nikkah was preceded by a mehndi and followed by a grand reception.

    Bilawal accuses PM of only wanting Sindh’s money while ignoring its people

    Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari launched a vicious verbal assault against Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, wherein the PPP chairman accused the premier of only wanting Sindh for its resources while ignoring the people.

    “[Imran] neither needs Sindh nor Sindh’s people but he wants Sindh’s islands, gas, coal, tax revenue, the money you give,” Bilawal said, adding that Imran had failed to spend money on Sindh to solve its problems.

    The PPP chairman claimed that Imran had refused to give the province its due Rs160 billion last year, and had projected to deny Rs200 billion this year.

    Speaking to a fired up crowd at the Hyderabad rally of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), Bilawal alleged that PM Imran had refused to accept Sindh as a province of the country and therein asked who the province actually belonged to.

    “He can only rob your rights but you, the people of this country will not tolerate him. We will protect our rights and our democracy and make this PM run away,” he added.

    Bilawal told the crowd to think of “how much employment we could have provided to the youth of Hyderabad” with the aforementioned Rs200 billion.

    “This is the same government that promised one crore jobs. I ask the people of Hyderabad whether they have gotten even one job from those one crore jobs,” he said on the occasion.

    “This is not Imran Khan’s money, this is the money of the people of Hyderabad and we will go to Islamabad and take back our right from them,” he added.

    He further stated that none of the provinces, including Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), belonged to PM Imran.

    Bilawal, terming the ruling party as “puppet, selected and formed as a result of rigging”, said that Imran’s vision for a Naya Pakistan had only resulted in a more “expensive Pakistan”.

    The PPP chief lamented the inflation that had struck the country, wherein food items like wheat and sugar were beyond the people’s purchasing power. “Imran’s tabdeeli (change) has brought so much inflation, unemployment and poverty in the last year that half of Pakistan’s families have food deficiency,” he said.

    In further criticism of the government, he said that the prime minister had once said that he would “commit suicide before going to the IMF (International Monetary Fund)” to ask for a loan.

    On the occasion, he accused the government of giving relief to the rich while bringing pain to the poor. He said that Imran had also promised houses to the people, but so far no results from the affordable housing schemes had been shown.

    He said that the people have been “suffering the burden of an incompetent and corrupt government”.

    An angry citizen of Sanghar threw a bag of cow dung on the personal assistant to the chief municipal officer of the city.

    As per reports, the man complained that there were huge heaps of trash lying in different areas of the city and the government did not pay any attention to the problem.

    “These people should get a taste of their own medicine,” said the man.

    After the attack, PA Noor Muhammad Nizami hit the man and refused to work until the man was arrested.

    “We will not work until an FIR is registered against him,” said Nizami.

    “I was sitting in my office working when a group of people suddenly entered my office and threw this dirt on me,” stated Muhammad, adding that the attackers gripped him by the collar of his shirt.

    A case has been registered against four men.

    COVID-19: Sindh reopens shopping malls on weekends

    The Sindh government has allowed shopping malls in Karachi to remain open on the weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). 

    According to the notification issued by the government, shopping malls will now be allowed to operate seven days a week under the government’s COVID-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs).

    The notification added that if a shopping mall is situated in a virus hotspot within the city, then it will remain closed as only essential businesses are permitted to operate therein. 

    Meanwhile, as of January 21, the province has recorded 12 COVID-related deaths, elating the overall number to 3,855. Some 716 new cases were diagnosed taking the positivity rate to 11.2%. 

  • Archaeologists find evidence of third-century settlement in Sindh

    Researchers from Shah Abdul Latif University’s Department of Archeology have found traces of a third-century settlement in Brahmanabad, Sindh. Brahmanabad is believed to have been set up in the eighth-century by Muhammad Bin Qasim. The area was the historical capital of the Muslim Caliphate in Sindh during the eighth century, under the Umayyad Caliphate and then under the Abbasid Caliphate from the year 750 AD to 1006 AD.

    According to a report in Arab News, a team of around 20 archaeologists started excavation on the site in December as part of a joint project of the Sindh culture department and Shah Abdul Latif University in Khairpur. The supervision was led by Dr Ghulam Muhiuddin Veesar.

    Speaking to the publication, Veesar said: “Through [the] material we got, we can say that this settlement of Brahmanabad also existed in the third century AD and people lived here, proving that the settlement is of a pre-Islamic era.”

    “We have done both vertical and horizontal excavations so that we may know its cultural phases to determine when the settlement started, how long people were living there,” said Dr Veesar, adding: “Another important feature we found is that the whole settlement is established on a riverbed. They formed the settlement on mounds of natural silt sand dunes of river bed.”

    Sindh Minister for Culture, Syed Sardar Ali Shah referred to the findings as of “high importance”.

    “It is a great achievement,” he said. “The detailed report is awaited, but in the future, these findings can be helpful in connecting the linkage with other archaeological sites like Mohenjo Daro.”

    This is the third such excavation on the archaeological site in the last 180 years. The first one took place in 1854 during British rule and the second one was in 1962 by a government of Pakistan team.

    Cops run for life after pigs enter Sindh police station

     Two pigs have reportedly entered a police station in Sindh after which cops were seen running out of the building to save their lives.  

    According to the details, the incident took place in Moro City of Sindh’s Naushahro Feroze district.

    As soon as the pigs made an unexpected entry into the station building, the police staff present inside panicked. The witnesses noted that police stayed outside while pigs were inside.

    The station house officer (SHO) said one of the pigs was brought back out while the personnel sought help to bring out the other one.

    The police managed to reclaim the station with the help of locals.

    Karachi among world’s most polluted cities

    Karachi has been listed among the world’s most polluted cities ranking sixth on the global Air Quality Index on Monday.

    As per details, the number of polluted particles in the air in the provincial capital was recorded at 186 particulate matter.

    The capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek was on the top of the list while India’s Kolkata ranked second among the world’s most polluted cities.

    According to the classification, pollution from 151 to 200 degrees is harmful to health, pollution from 201 to 300 degrees is extremely harmful to health, while more than 301 degrees indicates hazardous pollution.
