    Gallup survey: 92% respondents think Karachi is the best city to live

    The survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan has revealed that 92% of the respondents think that Karachi is the best place to live expressing that the Sea View was their most likeable feature of the city, while garbage/littering is the most unlikable aspect of the city.

    Over 500 people from across Karachi took part in the poll conducted by Gallup Pakistan that was held from Oct 27 to November 17, 2020.

    17% Karachiites were not satisfied with the city’s electricity’s supply.

    8 out of 10 citizens representing 82% of the respondents have shared that they felt safe in their neighbourhood during the day. 3 out of 4 expressed that they feel unsafe in the city due to violent crimes.

    Man climbs electric pole after angry wife demands divorce

    A man in Sindh climbed a heavy voltage electric pole on Thursday following his wife’s decision to go to court to file for a divorce after an argument erupted between the couple.

    As per reports, the woman had married the man by choice. She had filed  for a divorce after a domestic dispute.

    He tried to convince his wife but was unable to change her mind. After the failed negotiation attempt outside of the court’s premises, the man decided to climb the electric pole to threaten his wife.

    Sukkur Electric Power Company cut the pole’s power off after they received the information.

    The police have now arrested the man for attempting to commit suicide.

    Sindh govt revises restaurant timings for outdoor dining, takeaways

    The home department of Sindh government has released new COVID-related instructions allowing take-aways and deliveries of restaurants till 1 am.

    The notification reads that the restaurants can provide dine out service until 10 pm while they can facilitate customers for take-away services for up to an hour into the midnight.

    Previously, the restaurants were only allowed to operate  till 10 pm for dine-out, take-aways and deliveries.

    The notification is valid until January 31.

    Sindh to develop 10 tourist spots

    The Sindh Government has decided to develop 10 potential tourist sites in the province through a public-private partnership.

    According to reports, the provincial government will conduct feasibility at 10 such sites across the province to develop them into tourist spots. These areas include Gorakh Hill Station in Dadu district, Ranikot Fort in Jamshoro district, Keenjhar Lake in Thatta, Nagarparkar in Tharparkar, Achhrro Thar in Sanghar, Mohenjo Daro in Larkana, Sehwan, Bhit Shah, Drigh and Langh Lakes in Kambar-Shahdadkot, Lab-e-Mehran / Sadhbelo in Sukkur and coastal belt of the province.

    The decision was announced after a meeting of the provincial Tourism and Culture Department, which was chaired by Sindh Chief Secretary (CS) Syed Mumtaz Ali Shah.

    Expressing that the province had great tourism potential, the Chief Secretary said: “Sindh government wants to develop facilities for tourists so that tourism can flourish not only at the already existing sites but at several other sites which have so far been neglected.”

    Such sites would be surveyed with the help of private sector, he added.

    Shah also instructed the Works and Services Department to repair the roads going towards Ranikot and Nagarparkar to make the route for tourists easier.

    Sindh Culture and Tourism Secretary Akbar Laghari in his briefing shared that the feasibility study of Lab-e-Mehran and Gorakh Hills had already been done. He added that they also plan to build a theme park at Mohenjo Daro and aim to construct low-cost hotels in the area.

    Meanwhile, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday inaugurated two national parks in Gilgit-Baltistan to protect endangered wildlife and promote eco-tourism in the area.

    Villagers kill rare Indus dolphin near Nawabshah

    Villagers from Sindh’s Nawabshah district allegedly killed a rare Indus River Dolphin, also known as the blind dolphin. According to journalist Amar Guriro, who shared a video from the incident on social media, the dolphin was stranded in Gujjar Canal when the villagers caught it. In the video shared by Guriro, the villagers can be seen celebrating the man who caught the dolphin.

    Further reports revealed that the dolphin died due to injuries and mishandling.

    The official Twitter handle of the Sindh Wildlife Department also shared details about the incident and said that a criminal case is being registered against those involved in the incident.

    Later, they announced that the “offender whose unlawful act of trapping Indus Dolphin that stranded in a minor irrigation canal has been arrested with the help of Sindh Police.”

    Meanwhile, several Twitter users including Fatima Bhutto, expressed their sadness over the incident.

    According to WWF-Pakistan, the Indus River dolphin is one of the world’s most endangered freshwater river dolphins. Currently, there are only about 2000 dolphins in the waters of the Indus.

    IG among senior officials of Sindh police seeking leave after Capt (r) Safdar’s arrest controversy

    A day after it was reported that Sindh police was pressurised to register a case against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Capt (r) Safdar, high ranking officers of the force have sought a 60-day leave.

    According to reports, several senior officers, including Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mushtaq Mahar, have decided to go on leave.

    The officials also include the additional inspector general (AIG) of Karachi, Special Branch AIG and several deputy inspector generals (DIGs).

    An application signed by AIG Special Branch Imran Yaqoob, a copy of which is available with The Current, says that he submitted the request for leave after the police high command was “ridiculed and mishandled” leading to the demoralisation of all ranks of the Sindh police.

    A day earlier, soon after the “inappropriate” arrest of Capt (r) Safdar from his hotel room in Karachi, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led Sindh government had distanced itself from the development.

    Amid criticism aimed at alleged rifts among the ranks of the joint opposition — the PPP purportedly going after allied PML-N — it was claimed that the provincial police chief had actually been forced to go after Capt (r) Safdar.

    Meanwhile, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Tuesday reportedly took notice of the incident.

    “Taking notice of Karachi incident, COAS has directed Karachi Corps commander to immediately inquire into the circumstances to determine the facts and report back as soon as possible,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

    The boy, who became popular after a video of his calling out Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for the miserable conditions in interior Sindh, went viral on social media has now decided to make TikTok videos to solve problems of his area. Ahmed Marri had criticised the Pakistan People’s Party chairman for lack of clean drinking water in his village near Khapro in district Sanghar.

    Talking to Independent Urdu, the boy said that even several weeks after his complaint, the problem has still not been resolved and the contaminated water is still there creating difficulties for the people of his area.

    Bilawal and many other celebrities had sent him chickens as a gift for which he is thankful but the boy asserts that there is no solution to the lack of clean drinking water in his area. He shared that locals have to travel ten kilometers away regularly to get clean drinking water.

    A viral video has shown a minor kid blasting the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) led Sindh government after his rooster died allegedly due to now-contaminated rainwater flooding Tando Bago town of Badin district.

    Over 20,000 families have badly been affected in Badin where recent heavy rains have wreaked havoc. While 269 millimetres rainfall has badly affected all five administrative divisions of the district, Taluka Tando Bago is the worst affected.

    According to the provincial government, around 4,000 houses have been damaged in all divisions while entire crops of tomatoes, onion, cotton and others have either been completely or partially destroyed.

    “My rooster has died! We will too!” the kid was heard as saying in Sindhi in the viral video, standing in rainwater flooding a field, holding his dead rooster in his hand.

    “When will Bilawal come to help us? When we are already dead?” he said, adding that their houses had washed away and their animals had died due to contaminated water.

    The video is drawing strong reactions from social media users, who are expressing concern over the provincial government’s inability to save the people from monsoon rains.

    Earlier, protests against authorities were reported in Karachi as urban flooding spelled misery for the people of the country’s largest city owing to the lack of monsoon infrastructure.

    Dozens of deaths were also reported in rain-related incidents such as roof-collapse and electrocution in Pakistan’s business hub.

    Sindh Wildlife Department clarifies no crocodiles escaped from Mangho Pir shrine

    The Sindh Wildlife Department has clarified that no crocodiles have escaped from the shrine of Mangho Pir and the pictures being circulated on social media are fake.

    The department shared a video of the areas where the crocodiles were reportedly seen and of the Manghopir Shrine where the crocodiles live. Officials of the Sindh Wildlife Department said that after doing a survey of the area, they concluded that no crocodile escaped the shrine during the rains.

    Officials present at the shrine further said that the crocodiles cannot escape the enclosures as the cages are high, adding that CCTV cameras have also been installed to keep a check on everything happening at the shrine.

    News of crocodiles on the loose in the Karachi began to do the rounds on social media after rain water flooded the streets of Karachi. PTI MNA Aamir Liaquat also shared a picture of a crocodile and asked residents of Surjani Town, Khuda Ki Basti and Nayi Karachi to be careful.

    Some social media users have claimed that the picture is from Philippines. The Current could not independently verify this claim.

    According to a report published in 2018, the Mangho Pir shrine is home to over 100 crocodiles that waddle between the devotees near a swampy green pond where they have lived for generations.

    Meanwhile, heavy rain has inundated Karachi and lack of proper infrastructure has submerged half the city.

  • Jazz, Ufone, Zong to provide next-gen internet in remote areas of Balochistan, Sindh

    Government has given an approval to private companies for the provision of high-speed internet in the under-served areas of Balochistan and Sindh.

    The Federal Secretary of Ministry of Information technology (MoIT), Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui chaired the 73rd board of directors meeting regarding Universal Service Fund earlier this week.

    The board approved contracts to Jazz — Pakistan Mobile Communications Limited (PMCL), Zong — China Mobile Pakistan (CMPAK), and Ufone — Pakistan Telecom Mobile Limited (PTML), for the provision of next-generation internet.

    Jazz Telecom has been awarded the contract of Ghotki, Zong is going to work in Jaffarabad, Sohbatpur, and Nasirabad district under the contract. In contrast, Ufone is being awarded the agreement of the Ziarat and Kalat region. The worth of this Sustainable Development Projects is Rs. 895 million in total.

    According to MoIT, Jazz is going to provide high-speed internet to about 2 million citizens residing in Ghotki, Sukkur, and Khairpur district. The approximate area that is going to be covered is 23,252 square kilometres.

    Similarly, under the contract, Zong is going to offer a high-speed broadband connection to 0.4 million people living in the Jaffarabad, Sohbatpur, and Nasirabad district. The approximate area covered via this contract is 3,431 square kilometres.

    Ufone will serve a speedy Broadband connection to a population of 17,406 in the Ziarat and Kalat region of Baluchistan. According to the contract, the telecom company is going to cover approximately 64 square kilometres.

    Other officials that attended the meeting are Maj Gen Amir Azeem Bajwa, the chairman of PTA, NITB CEO Shabahat Ali Shah, Telenor Pakistan CEO Irfan Wahab, PTCL CEO Rashid Khan and Consumer Association of Pakistan Chairperson Kaukab Iqbal.
