Amid ‘Katespiracy’, Meghan Markle returns to Instagram

Meghan Markle, the wife of Britain’s Prince Harry, is launching a new lifestyle brand seemingly named after the couple’s oceanside California home. An Instagram page and website for American Riviera Orchard went live without advance warning Thursday, both featuring a gold-colored crest for the new venture.

The logo featured the word Montecito, the celebrity enclave where the couple have lived since 2020, which is close to Santa Barbara — itself sometimes known as the American Riviera. The social media account’s biography simply reads: “by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex.”

A representative for the duchess confirmed her participation in the new venture to AFP, without providing further details. American Riviera Orchard appears to be a kitchen and lifestyle-themed brand.

Thursday’s launch was accompanied by a grainy, retro-style promotional video in which Meghan Markle is seen arranging flowers and baking in a kitchen. A mailing list offered users the chance to sign up to become “the first to know about products, availability, and updates from American Riviera Orchard.”

Harry and Meghan, who is American, quit royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California. Their official Instagram handle has not posted since then. Meghan’s personal social media accounts and former lifestyle blog were both closed before the couple married.

In recent years, the couple have pursued a variety of media ventures. They criticised Britain’s royal family in a string of high-profile outpourings including a Netflix documentary series and Harry’s blockbuster autobiography Spare.

The couple had a Spotify-exclusive podcast deal, which came to an end last year after just one show. Netflix also dropped an animated series created by Meghan but an executive for the streaming giant in January said multiple projects from the couple, including a movie, remained “in very early development.”

Streaming giant Spotify adds music videos to output

Stockholm (AFP) – Music streaming giant Spotify on Wednesday announced it would be posting music videos on its platform in “select markets”, entering an arena long dominated by YouTube.

“The beta version of music videos on Spotify begins rolling out today…,” the company said in a statement.

It would release limited catalogue of hits from global artists such as Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, and Ice Spice, as well as local favourites, it added.

Initially, the music videos will only be available to paying subscribers in the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya.

In early February, Spotify announced it had passed 600 million monthly users, of which 236 million were paying subscribers.

Google’s streaming behemoth YouTube has long dominated music videos online, with much of the platform’s most-viewed content being music videos.

Songs like Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” and K-pop star Psy’s viral hit “Gangnam Style” each gathered several billion views.

Spotify has invested heavily since its launch to fuel growth with expansions into new markets and, most recently, exclusive content such as podcasts.

Spotify Wrapped Day commences at the end of the year when Twitter users fear the dreaded results about the songs and artists they have listened to all year. Already, users are in hysterics over how Pritam continues to dominate everyone’s top five artists list, with not many even knowing who he is.

But another feature included in the final results is the sound town, which matches fans to a city where other fans of their favourite artists come from.

Pakistani Twitter users were in fits after majority of the results of this feature associated them with Multan.

Hilarious memes began to commence on the bird app.

  • Spotify announces second round of layoffs, cutting 200 jobs in podcast unit amid restructuring efforts

Spotify announces second round of layoffs, cutting 200 jobs in podcast unit amid restructuring efforts

On Monday, Spotify Technology announced its intention to implement a second wave of redundancies, resulting in the reduction of 200 positions within its podcast unit. This strategic restructuring follows a prolonged period of substantial investment, as the company seeks to adapt its business model accordingly.

This decision affects approximately 2 per cent of the music-streaming giant’s workforce, bringing Spotify in line with other prominent industry players such as Meta Platforms and Roku. These companies, facing an uncertain economic landscape, have also resorted to similar measures by implementing a second round of job cuts.

During early trading, the shares of this Sweden-based organisation exhibited a modest increase of approximately 0.5 per cent, outperforming the relatively subdued performance of the broader market.

In recent years, Spotify has actively pursued the expansion of its podcast business, anticipating that the format’s heightened engagement levels would attract a larger number of advertisers. However, this ambitious endeavour resulted in a surge of the company’s operating expenditure, growing at twice the rate of its revenue last year. Furthermore, rising interest rates and persistent inflation have prompted businesses to curtail their advertising expenditures.

Consequently, earlier in 2023, Spotify took the decision to reduce its workforce by 6 per cent, while also announcing the departure of Dawn Ostroff, a pivotal figure in shaping the podcast business. Ostroff adeptly navigated the company through contentious episodes, including the controversies surrounding Joe Rogan’s show and its alleged dissemination of misinformation concerning COVID-19.

In light of these circumstances, Sahar Elhabashi, the head of Spotify’s podcast business, conveyed on Monday that the company has reluctantly but necessarily opted for a strategic realignment. This course of action aims to address the prevailing challenges and align the organisation with its evolving objectives.

Additionally, Spotify unveiled its plan to consolidate the Parcast and Gimlet studios into a unified entity known as Spotify Studios. This amalgamation will oversee the production of Spotify originals. Elhabashi emphasised that the company intends to adopt a bespoke approach tailored to each individual show and creator, departing from the previously uniform approach.

By undertaking these measures, Spotify aims to optimise its operations, remain agile in a dynamic market, and position itself for sustained success in the podcast industry.

  • YouTube Music finally adds real-time lyrics in collaboration with MusixMatch

YouTube Music finally adds real-time lyrics in collaboration with MusixMatch

YouTube Music has finally introduced an automatic real-time tracking feature for lyrics, catching up with competitors Spotify and Apple Music. Previously, lyrics were only available on Google’s streaming platform in a basic manual format.

Now, any song with uploaded lyrics on YouTube Music will feature the new real-time tracking feature, which highlights lyrics as they are sung and enlarges the text size within the Lyrics tab of the app. The development of this feature was a collaboration between Google and MusixMatch, with LyricFind also contributing to real-time lyrics tracking.

MusixMatch is also responsible for providing lyrics on Spotify, including in languages other than English. Although the feature has not been officially released yet, screenshots of the new feature have been seen on Android and iOS. Some Android users have even claimed to have already accessed the feature via app version 5.51.50.

It seems that the feature is gradually being rolled out to different regions, so it’s recommended to keep your YouTube Music app up to date to ensure you don’t miss out. However, it’s worth noting that some regions may have to wait longer than others to get the new feature.
