    Sukkur submerged as rain breaks 77-year record

    Sukkur was rocked by torrential rainfall over the weekend, and the city’s mayor, Arslan Sheikh, claimed that the Sindhi town recorded the heaviest rainfall in 77 years.

    Reports suggest that 292 mm of rain fell on the city and the adjoining areas of Larkana and Nowshehru Feroze, which were also submerged under torrential downpours.

    The Deputy Commissioner of the city informed Geo News that 24 people were injured in various incidents during the two-day rain, whereas 48 houses were damaged, and five animals died due to electrocution.

    Earlier, it was claimed that the city had received 300 mm of rain, but Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz denied the claim and said that 116 mm of rain was recorded in Sukkur during 48 hours while 134 mm of rain was recorded in Rohri.

    Several hours have passed since the torrential rain in Sukkur stopped but the work of draining the rainwater is still going on.

    Citizens remained unhappy with local administration as the entire city became waterlogged. Roads are flooded while the railway station and nearby areas are still submerged in water.

    On the other hand, the district administration claims that more than 95 percent of the city’s areas have been cleared. Old Sukkur, Shalimar, Bakhar Chowk, Commercial Center Ghanta Ghar and surrounding commercial centres have been drained, but water is still present at Sukkur Railway Station.

    Power was restored in Sukkur after 40 hours.

    Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has asked Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah for a report on the situation caused by the rains.

    The Meteorological Department has shared that strong monsoon winds will likely enter Sindh on the night of July 28.

    From July 28 to July 30, rain with thunder is expected in various cities of Sindh, Tharparkar, Umarkot, Badin, Sajawal and other places of Sindh.

    There is a possibility of rain in Karachi, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad and other places from July 29 to 30, while the temperature may increase in Karachi on Sunday and Monday, likely to reach 34 to 36 degrees celsius.

    As per the predictions of weather department, it will be partly cloudy and humid in Karachi on Sunday while there is a possibility of drizzle and light rain in the city tomorrow evening or night.

    From Monday to Tuesday, Karachi will experience thunder and heavy rain in some pockets.

    Today the city is expected to remain cloudy, reports Geo.

    In the last 24 hours, the city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 29.4 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is expected to be between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius.

    Humidity in the air is 82 percent and the sea breeze is blowing at a speed of 11 km per hour.

    For a long time, anti-Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) political parties in Sindh have had a desire to keep it away from power. To achieve their target, they have formed alliances and engineered seat adjustments since 2013, but they have failed at every occasion. Keeping their tradition alive, they have again joined hands by expanding an already existing alliance – the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) – and by making seat adjustments with the remaining anti-PPP parties: the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), etc., and personalities.

    Administratively, Sindh is divided into six divisions and 30 districts. Voters in Sindh have to directly elect 61 MNAs and 130 MPAs to represent them in the National Assembly (NA) and provincial assembly (PA). PPP leadership is confident that this time it will increase its seat tally from Sindh, but the party’s biggest impediment is internal rivalry of its candidates in different areas.

    On most seats in Sindh, PPP candidates have a clear lead over their opponents, unless a miracle happens. Today we will discuss national and provincial assembly seats in Larkana (eight NA and 17 PA seats) and Sukkur (seven NA and 14 PA seats) divisions, where a close contest is expected or where important candidates are in the running.

    On NA 190 Jacobabad-I, a neck-to-neck fight is expected between traditional rivals, 2018 winner Mohammad Mian Soomro, who is running as an independent candidate, and PPP’s Ijaz Jakhrani. Similarly on PS 1, Jacobabad-I, PPP’s first-time runner Sher Mohammad Mugheri is facing independent candidate Abdul Razzaque Khan. On PS 3 Jacobabad-III, Mumtaz Jakhrani, PPP’ ex-provincial minister and relative of NA candidate Ijaz Jakhrani has rebelled against party decision and is in the race against PPP candidate Aurangzeb Panhwar. This constituency will see a close fight. All these independent candidates have the support of GDA and its allies. Past results suggest that PPP’s Sohrab Sarki is favourite on PS 2 Jacobabad-II. However, JUI-F’s Shafique Khoso is possibly giving him nightmares.

    PPP’s Shabbir Ali Bijarani and JUI-F’s Dr. Ibrahim Jatoi are in the race on NA 192 Kashmore cum Shikarpur. A close contest is expected here because both the candidates have not only party votes at their disposal but they have strong personal support bases too. On PS 5, Kashmore II, JUI-F’s Rab Nawaz Chachar, with the help of his community and the influential Tegho Khan Teghani, can surprise Ghulam Abid Sundrani of PPP. On PS 7 Shikarpur-I, Agha Taimoor Khan of JUI-F, whose peers were associated with the PPP and he himself has remained PPP MPA, is contesting the election against PPP where an interesting contest is expected. PPP’s Arif Mahar is up against JUI-F’s Abid Jatoi on PS 8 Shikarpur-II, where a fierce battle is expected.

    Although JUI-F’s Rashid Mehmood Soomro is up against PPP’s fresh inductee Shahryar Mahar, son of ex-federal minister Ghous Bux Mahar on NA 193 Shikarpur, his actual constituency is NA 194 Larkana where he is contesting elections against PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. His brother Nasir Mehmood Soomro is contesting NA 196 Kamber-I against Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. According to local sources, PPP candidates have an edge over their rivals on these seats. However, PPP will have challenging contests on PS 12 Larkana-III and PS-14 Kamber I.

    On NA 198, PPP’s Khalid Lund will be challenged by independent candidate Faqeer Abdul Haq alias Mian Mithoo, infamous for forced conversion cases. Similarly on PS 18 Ghotki-I, PPP candidate Shahryar Shar is facing sitting PPP Senator Jam Mehtab Dahar and on PS 19 Ghotki-II, PPP candidate Bari Khan Pitafi is facing independent candidate Nadir Akmal Leghari. Both these independent candidates enjoy the support of PPP rivals.

    The PPP has smooth sailing in Sukkur, where former federal minister Khursheed Shah and others are in the run. GDA’s Deedar Jatoi will offer a bit of resistance against PPP’s Nauman Shaikh on NA 200 Sukkur-I and independent candidate Mubeen Jatoi against PPP’s Nasir Shah on PS 25 Sukkur-IV. Nafisa Shah, Qaim Ali Shah and Halar Wassan enjoy one-way traffic on NA 202 Khairpur-I, PS 26 Khairpur-I and PS 27 Khairpur-II respectively. There is a close contest on NA 203 Khairpur-II between Sadaruddin Shah of GDA and Fazal Shah of PPP. While in NA 204 Khairpur-III, PPP’s Javed Shah has a small lead over Moazzam Abbasi of GDA. On PS 27 Khairpur-III and PS 31 Khairpur-VI, PPP candidates Sajid Banbhan and Syed Bachal Shah are in difficult positions against their rivals Ismail Shah and Rashid Shah of GDA. PPP’s Shiraz Rajper and Naeem Kharal are slightly better off against their rivals Rafique Banbhan and Khalid Shaikh of GDA on PS 29 Khairpur-IV and PS 30 Khairpur-V respectively.

    According to Dawn, Spotify Pakistan’s region-based breakdown has revealed that Sukkur is the place where BTS has the most fans. Three BTS songs ‘Yet To Come’, ‘Dreamers’ and ‘Dynamite’ are among the top five favorite tracks.
    Among major cities like Karachi, Peshawar and Lahore, Spotify reported that local musicians are currently holding the top spots which included ‘Pasoori’ by Ali Sethi and Shae Gill, ‘Iraaday’ by Abdul Hannan, ‘Bikhra’ and King’s ‘Tu Ake Dekhlay’.

    Spotify also revealed that currently the top trending artists in Pakistan include Atif Aslam, Young Stunners, Asim Azhar and Hasan Raheem. While several artists from across the border have also bagged spots like Arijit Singh, Pritam and AP Dhillon.

    Asad Umar accuses govt of wasting eight months in starting Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway project

    Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif inaugurated the 306-kilometre Sukkur-Hyderabad M6 motorway on Monday. The Rs307 billion project is expected to bring economic benefits in terms of saving significant travel time.

    During the ceremony, the premier said, “I ask Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to keep an eye on the entire project so that quality is maintained and the project is completed in a timely manner.”

    The premier also said that the project should be completed within 30 months. He also said that it is being completed under a public-private partnership agreement.

    He credited his brother and former PM Nawaz Sharif for laying the foundation of constructing motorways in the country. Moreover, he pointed out that this project was unnecessarily delayed by the previous government.

    It is pertinent to mention that the project was announced by the then PM Imran Khan last year, and is being described as the biggest project in the development package announced by him.

    Ahead of the PM’s address, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader and former planning minister Asad Umar congratulated the people of Sindh for the start of work on the motorway but highlighted the delay of this project by the incumbent government.

    Taking to Twitter, he said Public Private Partnership Board gave approval for the project on 31st March 2022. “Before this, the contractor was also selected. Now after wasting 8 months, the imported government is starting work,” he wrote.

  • PM Shehbaz expresses grief over tragic Motorway accident

    The collision between a passenger bus and an oil tanker left at least 20 people dead and six others injured on the Multan-Sukkur Motorway (M-5) at Jalalpur Peerwala interchange in the early hours of Tuesday, August 16. The ill-fated bus left from Lahore for Karachi at 9pm.

    Following the incident, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the incident and prayed for the deceased and their families.

    “I am saddened by the loss of 20 precious lives in the accident. My prayers are with the bereaved families,” he tweeted.

    Multan Commissioner Amir Khattak confirmed the development on Twitter. According to him, the tragic accident had taken place around 4am. He also shared photographs of the scene.

    However, a statement issued by Rescue 1122’s provincial monitoring centre in Lahore said the accident took place at 2:20am.

    A Motorway Police spokesperson revealed that the tanker was carrying thousands of litres of petrol. He added that the apparent cause of the accident was the bus driver falling asleep, reports Dawn.

    According to the Motorway Police, both vehicles the oil tanker and the bus caught fire soon after the collision. The officers of the Motorway Police immediately reached the spot after the accident took place. Local police and Rescue 1122 teams also reached the spot.

    The police added that the fire was so intense and terrifying that it was visible from a distance. At least nine passengers were safely rescued from the burning bus.

    According to the bus company sources, there were two drivers aboard the bus. All staff was to be changed in Sukkur. There were a total of 24 passengers on board. Two passengers were going to Hyderabad, while the others were en route to Karachi.

    Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Pervaiz Elahi demanded a report on the incident from the Multan commissioner. He also expressed grief over the loss of lives.

    Khairpur health workers inject at least 150 police officers with expired vaccine

    At least 150 officers of the Khairpur police department were injected with expired Covid-19 vaccines, confirmed by the Police Training Centre, reports Geo News.

    After the incident, an inquiry report stated that the date of expiry for the vaccine was December 2021, while the vaccine was administered on January 24.

    Four police officers out of 170 got sick due after getting an expired booster dose. Five health workers, including Dr Amar Lal were found responsible for the act.

    The inquiry report states that the incident took place due to the negligence of a storekeeper, a technician, a male nurse, and a vaccinator in Sukkur, and that action should be taken against those responsible.

    Court orders Shah Abdul Latif University to take law colleges exams delayed since three years

    The Sindh High Court’s Sukkur bench on Tuesday ordered the Shah Abdul Latif University to hold the law college exams in phases.

    As per reports, the petition was filed by law students pleading that the university has not taken their examinations for the last three years.

    The Registrar of Shah Abdul Latif University was present in the court today.

    “Why the exams have not held for the last three years,” Justice Aftab Ahmed Gorar asked the Registrar. “The papers were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic,” the university’s official replied.

    “The pandemic situation exists for one year but the papers have not been taken for the last three years,” the Justice remarked.

    “You have put the future of hundreds of students at stake,” Justice Gorar added.

    “The university should arrange exams twice or thrice in a year to complete the students degree course within five years,” the bench ruled.

    The court also asked the university officials to prepare and submit the exams schedule to the court within two hours.

    In the last hearing, the court issued arrest warrants of the university’s registrar officer and ordered his presence in court for ignoring the court orders.

    The students’ counsel in the previous hearing said that in spite of strict orders, the registrar did not come to the court.

    Police arrest boy for stealing brake plates from moving train in Sukkur

    Police claim to have detained a teenager from Sukkur for stealing iron from a moving train.

    As per reports, a video of a boy hanging from one side of the train’s locomotive engine, allegedly stealing brake plates of the engine, did the rounds on social media a few days back.

    The police filed a case against the boy after the video went viral and conducted a raid at a house in Sukkur where they managed to nab the suspect identified as Sarfaraz Sheikh.

    After the video of him stealing from a moving train aired on TV, the police said that Sheikh altered his appearance to escape arrest.

    According to the police, the train, the boy was seen clinging to, was the Hazara Express and was travelling to Karachi.

    A man in Sukkur climbed up an electric pole after his family failed to get him married. 

    As per details, Hanif hailing from Sukkur, a district of Sindh, climbed a pole of high tension wires after his family refused to get him married.

    The family of the youth is trying to convince him to come down.

    Talking to media, Hanif’s relatives said that he had again climbed the electric pole. Hanif has earlier climbed the pole four months ago.

    In a similar incident that happened in December, last year, a man had climbed up an electric pole to reportedly woo his angry wife in Sindh. Nadeem Jamali, a resident of Kandhkot, had climbed a pole of high-tension wires after his unhappy wife moved the court for Khula.
