Pakistan Stock Exchange may surpass 60,000 level soon

The benchmark index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) marked a record-breaking bullish run on Monday, closing just shy of the 60,000 mark without surpassing it.

There is an anticipation that, given the current pace, the stock market might breach the 60,000 level soon.

According to the PSX website, the KSE-100 index showed marginal gains until noon. However, at 1:11 pm, it experienced a sudden surge that persisted until closing time, reaching 59,811.34, up by 724.99 points (1.23%) from the previous day’s 59,086.35.

In the preceding Friday session, the KSE-100 index had set a new record at 59,100 points, attributed to strong corporate profits, reduced economic volatility, the successful conclusion of an IMF staff-level deal, expectations of a stable post-poll government, and optimism about an early reversal of monetary tightening. This led to a rapid increase in share prices over the last three months.

Regarding the current rally, Raza Jafri, head of equity at Intermarket Securities, noted, “The banking sector is driving the rally, aligning with the improving economic outlook.” He emphasised that banks, offering a combination of high dividend yields and attractive valuations, have consistently been favoured by foreign investors.

Shahbaz Ashraf, chief investment officer at FRIM Ventures, a Karachi-based investment company, attributed the rally to “cheap valuations and an influx of liquidity.”

  • Alarming surge in violence against women in Punjab with Lahore at top

A staggering surge has been witnessed in violence against women, with over 10,000 cases reported in the first four months of 2023 alone in Punjab.

Startling data from the Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO), a research-based advocacy firm, reveals that 5,551 women were kidnapped during this period, translating to an alarming average of two women abducted every hour.

SSDO, through a ‘Right to Information’ request to the Punjab Police under Article 19-A of the Constitution, collected the data, reflecting an urgent need for policymakers and stakeholders to address the issue and devise targeted measures to combat this growing crisis.

The report revealed that between January 1, 2023, and April 30, 2023, Punjab police registered a total of 10,365 cases of violence against women, alongside 1,768 cases of violence against children. However, the actual numbers may be considerably higher as many incidents go unreported due to social stigma and a lack of trust in law enforcement.

Lahore took the lead with 1,427 reported cases of violence, with one out of every four victims being kidnapped from the provincial capital. Other concerning statistics include 2,818 cases of physical assault, with Lahore as the primary hotspot (504), followed by Sheikhupura (262) and Faisalabad (225).

Additionally, 1,111 cases of rape and 613 cases of human trafficking were documented, with Lahore again topping the list with 139 rape cases and 210 trafficking cases. Faisalabad reported a significant number of rape cases at 117.

  • Pakistan Stock Exchange rises above 44,000 points after 14 months

Pakistan Stock Exchange rises above 44,000 points after 14 months

On Thursday, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) benchmark index surpassed the 44,000 milestone after 14 months, experiencing a substantial surge of over 600 points after a two-day decline. The PSX website reported the KSE-100 index closing at 44,178.85 points, reflecting a commendable rise of 1.44 per cent or 626.02 points.

Market analysts attribute this rally to several pivotal factors. Firstly, the standby agreement reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) played a crucial role in bolstering investor confidence. This agreement significantly alleviated uncertainties, particularly the risk of default, providing Pakistan with the opportunity to focus on its fiscal policies.

Additionally, the disbursement of payments to independent power producers (IPP) contributed to the positive momentum in the market. The government allocated around Rs140 billion to the IPPs, allowing them to distribute higher dividends. Consequently, this development led to a surge in the shares of these companies.

Moreover, the cement sector experienced a notable upturn due to a decline in international coal prices. Lower coal prices benefit the cement industry as coal is a primary fuel for cement production.

Prominent market experts, such as Salman Naqvi, the head of research at Aba Ali Habib Securities, express optimism about the market’s potential. Naqvi anticipates that the index could potentially reach a range of 45,000 to 46,000 points. However, he cautions that the rise may not be consistently linear, considering the recent slump following a historic bull run on Monday.

On Monday, the stock market witnessed significant gains as Pakistan secured a $3 billion short-term financial package from the IMF. This package provided significant relief to the struggling economy, which was facing a severe balance of payments crisis and diminishing foreign exchange reserves.

The funding, allocated over nine months, surpassed expectations and provided respite as Pakistan awaited the release of the remaining funds from a previous bailout package agreed upon in 2019. The IMF board is scheduled to approve the deal in July.

Rawalpindi: Transporters continue to overcharge ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr

PM Shehbaz rejects OGRA’s proposal, petrol price to remain unchanged till April 30

Pakistan’s new Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Friday dismissed the proposal from the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to raise the price of petroleum products for the fortnight. The recent decision is aimed at providing relief to the public affected by inflation.

It is worth noting that the present government’s choice to maintain the same prices will oblige it to provide another substantial subsidy till the end of April 2022.

Earlier, OGRA suggested to the Finance Division that the price of petrol be increased by Rs21.50 and that of diesel be hiked by Rs51.30 in view of the current petroleum levy and general sales tax (GST).

  • Pakistani rupee records impressive gains against US Dollar, highest single-day gain

Pakistani rupee records impressive gains against US Dollar, highest single-day gain

In the intra-day trade on Friday, the Pakistani rupee (PKR) gained an impressive Rs3.5 against the US dollar, the highest single-day gain in two years after the Supreme Court (SC) pronounced the National Assembly (NA) deputy speaker order unconstitutional and restored the NA.

The US dollar is currently trading at Rs185, as per foreign currency dealers, after weakening Rs3.5 versus the local currency in early trade. The USD is currently trading for above Rs186 on the open market.

On Thursday, the rupee concluded at Rs188.18 against the USD in the interbank market.

Consequently, the Pakistan Stock Exchange’s (PSX) benchmark KSE-100 index, reversed its downtrend shortly after starting on Friday and surpassed the 44,000 mark, a day after the Supreme Court of Pakistan annulled the deputy speaker’s decision against a no-confidence motion.

Considering the trading which continued at 44, 198 on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, the KSE-100 benchmark index gained 411 points.

The stock market has been under pressure since April 4, when it crumbled, losing over 900 points amid Pakistan’s ongoing political crisis, which arose after the National Assembly deputy speaker declared Prime Minister Imran Khan’s no-confidence resolution unconstitutional.

SBP’s rate increase of 250 basis points and establishment of cash margins on 177 commodities is a marker that the economic system is in a slump and that prior initiatives were inadequate. This protective approach will aid in limiting the import of certain products, consequently bolstering the balance of payments.

  • Petrol, Diesel prices to remain unchanged till April 15

The government has decided to maintain the existing prices for petroleum products for the fortnight. Petroleum prices will remain unchanged from April 1 to April 15, as per a statement released by the finance division.

Petrol is currently priced at Rs149.86 per liter, while diesel, kerosene oil, and light diesel are priced at Rs144.15, Rs125.56, and Rs118.31 per liter, respectively.

Following an increase in global market prices at the time, the government approved a record-breaking Rs12.03 per liter hike for petrol on February 15. Surprisingly, on February 28, the government decreased POL prices by Rs10 per liter, to lessen the impact of existing inflation on the public.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), on the other hand, has raised the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs13 per liter.
