    Wet autumn or dry winter? The forecast is here

    Last week’s spell of rain helped bid farewell to summers. So, what’s next? Will we have more rains to make autumn a wet one? Or are we heading for our traditional dry winters?

    One last spell of monsoon is about to hit the upper parts of Pakistan and will likely impact the entire country.
    A weather advisory issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said that the westerly rain-producing wave is likely to enter upper regions of the country on the evening or night of Thursday, September 28.

    Under the system, moderate to heavy rains with wind and thunderstorms is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, areas of Kashmir including Neelum valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur, and areas of Gilgit Baltistan including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar from September 28 to 30.

    Isolated spells of rain and thunderstorm with hailstorms are also expected in Kohat, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Haripur, Kurram, Waziristan, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Kasur, and Sheikhupura between September 28 and 29.

    Meanwhile, Zhob, Barkhan, Layyah, Bhakkar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Okara, Pakpattan, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar are also expected to witness similar weather conditions during the said period.
    Moreover, snowfall is expected over the high mountains of the upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan during this period.

    Under the possible impacts, the Met Office has also predicted a significant drop in the temperature in the areas affected by the spell.
    PMD advised farmers and tourists to manage their crop activities and remain cautious to avoid any untoward situation during the period, respectively.

    Meanwhile, the general public has been advised to stay at safe places during windstorms, lightning, and downpours as loose structures like electric poles, solar panels, billboards etc. may be damaged by the gusts.

    Addressing a public rally in Swabi, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz, on Wednesday, accused former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan of using “sorcery” to run the country.

    Maryam said that the nation should be thankful to God for getting rid of a government which ran country through ‘sorcery’ and did nothing substantial for the country.

    Moreover, the PML-N leader urged the people of Swabi to vote for PML-N in the next elections so that “KP should also get rid of Imran Khan”.

    Criticising Khan, she said there is no truth to Khan’s ‘threat letter’ claims. She was of the view that the PTI chairman is “hiding his incompetence behind a fake threatening letter despite the fact that his own party’s MNAs went against him and MPAs [in Punjab] voted in favour of Hamza Shehbaz”.

    According to Maryam, the former PM left the economy in doldrums and maintained that it would at least take two years to bring the economy back on track.

    She also accused Khan of attacking state institutions for not siding with him.

    ‘Affects their behaviour’: Women University Swabi bans smartphones on campus

    Students at the Women University Swabi (WUS) have been prohibited from using smartphones and tablets on campus, with a severe warning about disciplinary action and a fine in case of violation of the ban.

    As per a circular of the university, the copy of which is available with Dawn reads.: “It is notified for information of all the students that smartphones/touch screen mobiles or tablets will not be allowed on the premises of Women University Swabi with immediate effect.”

    “It has been observed that students extensively use social media applications during the university timings, which affects their education, behaviour and performance,” the circular noted.

    As per the circular, the authorities would initiate a stern disciplinary action against those students violating the ban including cellphones and tablets confiscation and a fine of Rs5,000.

    Deans and heads of all departments have been directed to relay the instructions to the students after the vice-chancellor of the university signed the notification.

    Police rescue woman tied with chains, locked up by brothers

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police rescued a woman tied with the chains and locked up in a dark room by her brothers for over a year on Tuesday.

    As per reports, police have arrested the three brothers identified as Sahir Khan, Faheem Khan, and Nadeem Khan while the fourth brother is on the run. 

    Talking to The Express Tribune, District Police Officer (DPO) Swabi Muhammad Shoaib said they had received information about the woman they raided the house after confirmation and released her from the illegal captivity.

    Mohammad Shoaib further told the media that the woman was living with her brothers after her divorce. “She wanted to move the court to claim her children’s expenses from her ex-husband but her brothers did not want this.”

    “There was not even a fan inside the room. When we raided the house, we saw that she had been chained like an animal and the only light coming into the room was through a window,” said another police official.

    The policeman added that the woman had been imprisoned as her brothers blamed her for the divorce and were also against her seeking a job. 

    The woman stated in her FIR that she got married 13 years ago and had two children, a girl and a boy. A case has been filed against the accused and an investigation is underway.

    Swabi woman undergoes surgery to become ‘Umer Qureshi’

    A woman hailing from the Swabi district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa became a man after successful surgery on Friday.

    Talking to The Express Tribune, the woman’s brother Inamul Hassan said that his sister is an EDO education at Razzar Tehsil in Swabi. She earlier had two surgeries in Haripur district as well.

    The unmarried woman is in her 40s and lives with her parents in a village, Yar-e-Hussain.

    “A final decision about her sex would be announced after full recovery from procedures,” stated Inam.

    Expressing his joy for having another brother in the family, Inam said he has six sisters and two brothers but now would have an elder brother as Umer Qureshi, referring to his sister with her new name.

    A senior official in the district education office said that it will be the decision of the provincial education ministry to let her continue on the position of EDO or change it as she is not a “woman” anymore.

    She needs a medical certificate from relevant doctors after going through such procedure as it is a legal requirement in such cases, the official explained.

    “I cannot comment on her future assignments as it’s purely provincial ministry’s domain and what rights would she enjoy at her office… all I can say is that she would need to produce medical certificates,” he added.

    “The gender changing procedures conducted abroad are considered legal, but here due to legal restrictions and religious reason, we hide our patients from the public while the family also keeps quiet,” a doctor, who wished not to be named, told The Express Tribune.

    He explained that the process required two surgeries, one for changing the gender and the other for dominating the sex they were given by the nature, adding such patients have symptoms of both genders but procedures can be different from being simple to complex depending on the body structure of the patient.

    “After the procedures, we always issue the patients certificate for changing their names and genders in legal documents. If they are serving in public offices then they need to make changes in the respected department as well,” he added.

    He further said that the people should not hesitate for such procedures if they have such symptoms.

    “Don’t be shy about what you really are. Such procedures are mostly conducted in Thailand or other countries, but it needs legal coverage in Pakistan to avoid legal restrictions.”

    He revealed that he usually performs 20 to 30 such procedures a year but people refuse to receive their certificates and try to hide the changes.

  • VIDEO: LSE professor allegedly humiliates student for facing technical issues

    The COVID-19 pandemic has changed many things around the globe including the education system. Students from around the globe and Pakistan have been taking online classes ever since the pandemic started.

    Recently, a video of the Lahore School of Economics’ (LSE) Dean, Dr Sohail Zafar has gone viral on social media for allegedly berating a student who is from Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, for not buying a laptop and facing technical issues during the lockdown.

    The student, who had returned home after the university cancelled ‘face to face’ classes, demanded the cancellation of online classes because the software for online exams would not work properly on his laptop.

    In response to his complaint, the Dean can be heard saying: “You are a non-serious student, who does not pay attention to his studies.”

    He asked the student to buy a new laptop for Rs 40,000 and if he cannot afford it, he should simply rent a laptop.

    Since the video went viral,  #BoycottLSE started trending on social media.

    Meanwhile, the student involved in the incident, later made another video to clarify the incident and defend his professor. He said that whoever made the video had cropped it and the conversation between him and the professor was a friendly one that they had after the class was finished.
