Speaker National Assembly suspends Tariq Bashir Cheema for misbehaving with Zartaj Gul

The National Assembly (NA) session on Thursday, chaired by speaker NA Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, ended with heated arguments and important parliamentary decisions.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, suspended Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid-e-Azam (PML-Q) leader Tariq Bashir Cheema for today’s parliamentary session after a heated argument took place between him and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Zartaj Gul.

The decision to suspend Cheema was taken to keep decorum and maintain parliamentary standards.

However, the House accepted the question raised by the NA speaker in this regard.

Earlier, the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) claimed that Tariq Bahir Cheema used abusive words against Zartaj Gul during the parliamentary session.

Ayaz Sadiq also banned YouTubers, TikTokers, and media personnel from making videos in the corridors of the parliament to keep the environment peaceful.

Seat adjustment expected between PML-N, PML-Q on multiple seats

Former rivals Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) are expected to agree to seat adjustments for the upcoming general elections set to take place on February 8, 2024, as discussions on the matter between the two Punjab-based parties is in process, The News has reported.

According to the report, PML-Q wanted seat adjustment on multiple seats in Punjab as well as on the seats where the party won in the 2018 polls. PML-Q won four National Assembly (NA) seats and eight provincial assembly seats in 2018.

PML-Q leaders Salik Hussain, Monis Elahi, Hussain Elahi, and Tariq Bashir Cheema succeeded in those NA constituencies.

PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat’s son Shafay Hussain submitted nomination papers for two provincial assembly seats from the family stronghold of Gujrat.

Sources claimed that seat adjustment is expected on Salik and Shafay Hussain’s seats.

On the other hand, PML-Q leader Tariq Bashir Cheema will face PML-N’s Saud Majeed in Bahawalpur.

However, discussion on the matter of seat adjustment between PML-N and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) are still going on.

Tariq Bashir Cheema refutes son’s involvement in Bahawalpur University scandal

Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Tariq Bashir Cheema, has said in a press conference that his son, Walidad Cheema, has no involvement in the Bahawalpur University scandal. He further said that his political rivals are using this case as a tool to defame him.

A major scandal involving illicit activities, such as the use and sale of drugs, illegal medications and prohibited videos of female students and staff, at the Islamia University in Bahawalpur, surfaced earlier this month.

Tariq Bashir Cheema, a senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), also demanded that a commission of high court judges be set up to properly investigate the matter.

Stating that he is willing to cooperate with every inquiry committee along with his son, Cheema stated that he would throw out his son from his house if Walidad had any involvement in the matter.

On the other hand, Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that the people who are involved and responsible for this incident will be severely punished.

Earlier, Islamia University Bahawalpur’s Chief Security Officer was apprehended by police on charges of drug possession and possession of objectionable material, including videos and pictures of the university’s female officials and students.

    ECP declares Shujaat PML-Q president

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has restored Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain as the President of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) setting aside his removal as the head of the party by his cousin, former Chief Minister (CM) of Punjab, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

The commission also stated that the PML-Q’s Central Working Committee’s (CWC) decision to remove Shujaat as party chief was illegal, declaring it null and void.

On January 16, PML-Q’s CWC removed Shujaat as the party chief. His brother, Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain was given the command of the PML-Q.

The step was taken by the committee after Shujaat had suspended the basic membership of the-then CM Elahi — for his statement about a possible merger with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

After the ouster of PTI’s chief Imran Khan from power, rifts within PML-Q widened as the party got divided into two camps over the issue of joining hands with the PTI and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)

Elahi, his son Moonis Elahi and the majority of party leaders sided with the PTI while Chaudhry Shujaat, Salik Hussain and Tariq Bashir Cheema supported the PML-N.

During today’s proceedings, CEC Raja said the ECP is issuing notices to the parties in the case — PML-Q leader and Shujaat’s cousin, Pervaiz Elahi, and Punjab Secretary-General Kamil Ali Agha and both — Shujaat and Cheema — would retain their positions till the next hearing. The CEC adjourned the proceedings till August 16.

‘Stop making a mockery of family’: Chaudhry Shujaat asks Pervaiz Elahi to return home

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Monday asked Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to return home.

“At our residence, my room is on one side, while the other side belongs to Pervaiz Elahi,” the former premier said during a press conference on Monday.

They are trying to divide the family

“They are trying to divide our family,” he said while speaking about the ongoing conflict within the party. Shujaat advised Elahi to “stop making a mockery of our family”.

Regarding his sons and their involvement in political matters, the PML-Q leader — who was recently removed from his party position following the letter controversy during the CM’s election — said: “Attempts are being made to defame my sons, they have taken all decisions after consulting me and I am proud of them.”

He further added that those who levelled allegations against him and his sons have no standing.

Shujaat blamed the politicians after Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa intervened in the economic matters of the country by contacting United States officials and requesting an early dispersal of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) funds.

“Why was there a need for the army chief to interfere?” Shujaat questioned.

It is impossible to remove Shujaat from his party head position

Federal Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema said that he will only leave his position when Shujaat asks him to do so.

“It is impossible to remove Shujaat from his party head position,” Cheema said, referring to the unanimous decision taken by the PML-Q central working committee to remove Shujaat and Cheema from their party positions.

“Shujaat is the founder of the party and provincial offices have no authority to remove him,” he maintained, adding that this is not how parties work.

PML-Q unanimously decides to remove Chaudhry Shujaat as party head

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) Central Working Committee (CWC) has decided to remove Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Federal Minister Tariq Bashir Cheema from their party positions.

The decision to remove Shujaat from the party command was taken at a CWC meeting headed by Senator Kamil Ali Agha in the chair at the Muslim League House on Thursday. Shujaat has been the PML-Q president for the last two decades after Mian Azhar. He also served as a prime minister and senator.

“It has become necessary to isolate Chaudhry Shujaat to save the party from destruction,” said Kamil Ali Agha while talking to the media after the CWC meeting. He said that due to a conspiracy hatched by Salik Hussain and Cheema, a letter was used to ask PML-Q MPAs to vote for the PML-N, damaging the party’s reputation.

Chaudhry Shafaat Hussain said that the PML-Q’s central committee meeting cannot be held without the approval of Shujaat as no decision had been taken to convene the meeting of PML-Q’s central committee.

He said that Kamil Ali Agha was the general secretary of PML-Q’s Punjab chapter and he cannot act against the central president. He said that the PML-Q’s central working committee does not exist and there was no central working committee nor an executive committee and there was no information about the party meeting.

PM refuses to accept ‘minus Imran Khan’ policy

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan on Friday refused to accept the “minus Imran Khan” policy proposed by Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), reports Geo News.

“This cannot happen in any scenario,” said the PM according to media reports.

Chairing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) political committee, PM Khan said that the parties think this “minus one” formula will save the PTI-led government from falling.

“Fortunately, they are requesting […] this will boost our morale,” the premier was quoted.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in Islamabad said that there was a rumour circulating that “everything is okay but Imran Khan. Everything can be saved if we go towards minus one.”

The minister declared that there is “no room for minus one” in the PTI, adding that if anyone had any misunderstanding, they should remove it.

MQM-P Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, during an interview in Geo News’ programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, said, in the light of current developments, he thinks there was no chance for PM Imran Khan to stay in the office any longer.

“After today’s events, PTI government can survive but the prime minister’s survival is unlikely,” Siddiqui said.

Speaking on the same show after Maqbool, PML-Q leader and Federal Minister for Housing and Works Tariq Bashir Cheema agreed with the MQM-P leader’s views.

“Instead of opting for a new adventure, the prime minister should select a member from within the PTI who will be acceptable to all,” said the PML-Q leader — whose party is an ally in Punjab and the Centre.

“He has time till the [National Assembly votes on the] no-confidence motion,” Cheema said.
