    Man poisons wife, children to death in Thar

    A man killed his wife and children after poisoning them and later committed suicide on November 29 in the area of Tharparkar. 

     

    Local police recovered five bodies from a house in Koya village of Nangarparkar, a suburb of Tharparkar, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday. 

     


    The initial report by the police reveals that the man allegedly poisoned his three children and wife before committing suicide by hanging himself. 

     


    The deceased include a husband, wife, one daughter and two sons, as per the report.
    Police say that the bodies have been shifted to Tehsil Hospital Nagarparkar while an investigation into the incident has been initiated. 

     


    According to the initial investigation, the head of the house, Shankar, first poisoned his wife and children and then committed suicide by hanging himself.

     


    Upon receiving information about the incident, a police team was dispatched towards the spot as the village where the incident had happened is remote.

     


    However, the SHO of Nagarparkar asserted that more details will be revealed when the police team returns.

     

    A report suggests that the number of incidents declared as suicide in Tharparkar-a, a region plagued by poverty, limited sources and water this year alone, has reached 135.

     

    A similar incident happened in Lahore when the head of a household in the Shahdara Town area fed poisonous pills to his family on August 28.

     

    Local police at the time of the incident said that the suspect fed poisonous pills to seven people, including his wife and children.


    However, the family was saved by timely medical assistance.

     

    The man said in his statement that he tried to poison his family because of poverty.

     

    “There is not a grain of food in the house, rent has not been paid for seven months. Tired of poverty, I poisoned my wife, children and myself,” he stated.

    Mai Dhai belongs to the Manganhar Muslim community, known for its rich musical heritage in Pakistan’s Tharparkar district and India’s Rajasthan state.
     
    Since her breakthrough appearance at the 2013 Lahooti Live Sessions, her unique look and soulful voice have captured the attention of audiences worldwide. With her appearances at the prestigious SXSW Music Festival in 2015 and the City University Graduate Centre in New York, Mai Dhai’s global profile increased even further.
     
    Dhai unexpectedly rose to fame in Pakistan in 2016 after making her Coke Studio season 8 debut and receiving critical acclaim for ‘Aankhaṛli Phaṛookai’ and ‘Kadi Ao Ni,’ which featured Karam Abbas Khan and Atif Aslam.

    Gang-rape victim commits suicide after police does not register case

    A woman who was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped on Thursday in Mehran Soomro village in Tharparkar has committed suicide.

    The woman was left at an isolated place near her village after the sexual assault. She remained unconscious for many hours before her relatives found her and took her to a hospital.

    After regaining consciousness, she gave a statement to the police, narrating the incident. She said she was kidnapped on her way to Hyderabad to get documents for her father’s pension.

    After her suicide, her brother registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the suspects, stating that the family was forced to take the matter to a jirga and not go to the police.

    He also said that area police were reluctant to register the case under the influence of certain local figures. Already traumatised by the rape, his sister could not bear her helplessness and took the extreme action of killing herself, he added.

    Later, on Monday, two nominated suspects were booked by the police. Station House Officer (SHO) Ali Hassan Chang of the Kaloi police station said that an investigation into the matter has been started.

    A 32-year-old Hindu woman from a village in Chhachhro, Tharparkar, delivered a dead breech baby girl at a charity hospital on June 16.

    Breech delivery is when a baby’s bottom comes out first during the delivery.

    In Chhachhro the hospital staff tried to deliver the breech baby’s head for half an hour but failed. After failing to deliver the rest of the baby, the hospital staff cut off the head before the mother was sent to Mithi hospital. The procedure was done in the absence of a gynaecologist and female staffers. The woman was then taken to the Mithi district headquarters hospital, where she was advised to rush to Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences, Jamshoro (LUH), which was 220 km away from Mithi. Altogether, she had to travel 319 km with the baby’s head inside her womb.

    According to the baby’s father, they had an X-ray taken from a hospital, where the doctor had told him that his wife would have an operation because the baby was upside down in the mother’s womb. According to him, the doctor also told him the date of delivery. He said that as soon as his wife’s condition deteriorated, he took her to a local midwife who said that she was not feeling well, after which he took his wife to the hospital.

    In LUH, an abdomen surgery was performed on her and the baby’s head was taken out after 18 hours of back-to-back delivery pains. This was the woman’s fifth child who died during delivery.

    Prof Dr Raheel Sikandar of LUH said that usually breech babies are delivered and they survive. According to him, the woman had a ruptured uterus.

    “Healthcare providers [in Chhachhro] might have tried to save the baby, but in vain. The baby’s head was entrapped. In such breech baby cases, deaths occur in one minute if they are not fully delivered.”

    “The baby’s buttocks and legs were fully developed, but unfortunately it was a dead breech baby,” Dr Sikandar added. However, the woman’s life has been saved. She is currently admitted to the gynecology unit of LUH.

    The charity hospital in Chhachhro said that while the nurses were cleaning the patient, the dead baby’s torso detached from the neck because the neck had already been broken. They revealed that at the time they didn’t have any gynaecologist, which is why they could not operate. The hospital further claimed that the woman’s family was told to go to Mithi but they insisted on getting the treatment at the charity hospital, reports BBC Urdu.

    Action taken by the authorities:

    A notification issued by the Director-General (DG) Sindh Health on Saturday stated: “The fetus was not in a cephalic position. So the head got stuck after delivering the torso because the delivery was done by inexperienced hands.” DG Sindh Health said that an investigation has been started in which the statements of the staff of the missionary hospital have been recorded. An inquiry was also ordered by the provincial health secretary.

    Pakistan has the highest infant mortality rate in South Asia. According to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the country reported 54 infant deaths per 1,000 live births.

    News of infant deaths and the non-availability of doctors in hospitals have been circulating in the media for the last decade in Tharparkar. Several times, this issue was brought up in the Supreme Court (SC), High Court, and the Sindh Assembly but all in vain.

    Four more children die of malnutrition in Tharparkar, death toll at 10

    Four more children are reported to have died due to malnutrition within the last two days in Tharparkar. The death toll of children in January has climbed to ten.

    A report released by the United Nation’s Children Fund (UNCF) in April stated that Pakistan is among the countries with the highest infant mortality rates, with 22 infants dying before turning a month old.

    The number of children who have lost their lives during the current year due to malnutrition and other diseases in Tharparkar has reached 413.

    Earlier this month, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Gulzar Ahmed asked for the filing of a petition in the Supreme Court for a resolution of the problems of the Thar region.

    The health department in order to avoid humiliation has directed staffers of concerned hospitals not to talk with the media, reports ARY News.
