  • Doctors in Lahore protest against 5-year-old girl’s alleged rape

Doctors in Lahore protest against 5-year-old girl’s alleged rape

Following the news of the alleged rape of a 5-year-old girl in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Lahore, the staff of the facility and the Young Doctors Association (YDA) are protesting. Consequently, the Lahore police has now registered a case on the allegations.

Dawn’s Imran Gabol reported that the protest is led by the young doctors of the hospital. Their demonstration was also joined by the staff and students of the hospital as well as adjoining facility of the Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU).

The protestors demanded a thorough investigation into the alleged rape of a minor girl in the premises of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. “The students of FJMU/SGRH demand transparency and an investigation of the case. The students further demand the administration to answer their criminal silence. If such incidents are covered up and silenced, it raises a question mark for the hospital administration,” the demand said.

    The Case

ARY News reported that a sanitation worker identified as Abid Maseeh allegedly molested the minor child in the hospital when she was admitted on the third floor. The report said that the mother of the child refused to proceed with the case, but the police arrested the worker.

ARY News reported the accused later confessed by stating that he was overpowered by “evil desires”.

Meanwhile, Dr Hafiz Moinuddin, SRG hospital’s medical superintendent, told Dawn.com that the girl was sleeping with her mother in a corridor when a sanitary worker “touched” her at 2am in the night. He said the girl screamed and woke her mother up, prompting several people in the hospital to gather on the spot.

The sanitary worker was then taken to the security room, where the security in charge called the police and handed over the suspect to them.

Dr Moinuddin asserted that Abid was not a hospital employee and that the company responsible for hiring him had also fired him following the incident.

He also informed Dawn that the hospital administration was taking special measures for the security of the attendants of patients and would not tolerate any mismanagement.

The FIR was registered at the Civil Lines police states that the police received a call that a suspect had harassed a woman’s daughter on the hospital’s third floor. Upon arriving, the police were informed that the suspect was a sweeper at the hospital who was surrounded by a crowd after the girl had created noise.

In its editorial, Express Tribune said, “The hospital’s version may well be true, but then why the attempts to obstruct the course of a probe? Why the text of the FIR did not mention rape? One fails to understand why the country’s law enforcement moves at a snail’s pace to even register a report in such cases. Why the reluctance?”

Videos of doctors and paramedical staff protesting outside the hospital are widely shared on social media, where they criticise the FIR, ask for better security and allege that the hospital administration is downplaying the incident, covering up the matter and silencing the victim’s family.

So many took to social media and voiced their opinion. Nida Kirmani posted that, “The admin of Ganga Ram Hospital is trying to cover up the sexual abuse of a 5-year old patient & threatening students of Fatima Jinnah Medical Uni for protesting. They must hold themselves & their staff accountable & provide support to the victim & her family.”

Saadia Ahmed posted about the incident, commenting that “this region is unlivable for the vulnerable.”

How was Faiz Hameed arrested? Azaz Syed reveals interesting details

Veteran journalist Azaz Syed has revealed how former spymaster General (retd) Faiz Hameed’s arrest took place.

On his YouTube show Talk Shock, Azaz said that Superintendent Adiala jail Mohammad Akram had multiple phones, one of which was an outdated Chinese-made phone used to exchange messages between former Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan and the former Chief of Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) Faiz Hameed.

“The phone was so outdated that the latest technology that the intelligence agencies deployed could not initially trace its calls,” Azaz claims.

He said that information was sent to intelligence that Mohammad Akram received calls from one number many times; after the number was checked, Faiz was apprehended, and intelligence agencies recovered the phone.

He further revealed that “Former Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar was also contacted through these phones.”

While commenting on Akram’s arrest, Syed predicted he would be a sworn witness against Imran Khan and Faiz Hameed.

Azaz said, “It will be a confessional statement someday”.

“When all evidence was showed to Faiz Hameed, he was shocked and disturbed”, Azaz claimed, adding that caught red-handed, he did not get the option to deny what he had done.

  • Twitter joins Jibran Nasir in calling out Tribune, ARY for deleting stories of Karsaz accident

Twitter joins Jibran Nasir in calling out Tribune, ARY for deleting stories of Karsaz accident

Lawyer and political activist Jibran Nasir has called out The Express Tribune and ARY News for deleting articles and news stories from their websites about the Karsaz accident where a woman reportedly from an influential background killed a father and daughter while injuring five others as her SUV ran over them.

Jibran posted on X (formerly Twitter) “Can @etribune and @ARYNEWSOFFICIAL explain why they have removed the Articles/News Items from their websites about Natasha Danish and the Karsaz Accident. The original news articles show up in Google search but source content has been removed from websites.”

He went on to lambast both platforms for being influenced by people with money. “Can money buy you complete immunity in Pakistan? You can run over and kill people in broad daylight, and the media will make sure everyone forgets about it. Forget about justice and conviction here you are protected from even getting condemned,” he wrote.

Fellow netizens joined in and criticised both platforms. Haider Rizvi posted, “Economic interests often prove to be greater killed of the news stories than even life-threatening situations or pressure from the state and other pressure groups.”

Anas Tipu also posted about Tribune’s deleted articles: “All three stories about Karsaz accident deleted by Express Tribune. They don’t care about press freedom when it comes to rich and elite.”

Zarish K. posted detailed video and screenshots showing articles by Express Tribune not been found even though they appear in the search. She captioned, “This is a perfect example of how power and wealth can twist the truth, leaving justice in the dust. The elite mafia manage to cover up their wrongdoings, escaping public scrutiny, and keeping themselves above the law. Meanwhile, the innocent and poor suffer in silence.”

  • Swift says filled with ‘fear’, ‘guilt’ after Vienna terror threat

Swift says filled with ‘fear’, ‘guilt’ after Vienna terror threat

Pop megastar Taylor Swift on Wednesday broke her silence about the cancellation of three Vienna concerts over an alleged suicide attack plot, saying the incident filled her with “fear” and “guilt.”

“Having our Vienna shows cancelled was devastating. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many had planned on coming to those shows,” the American said in a post on social media platform Instagram.

The Vienna shows, part of the European leg of Swift’s record-breaking “Eras” tour, were cancelled after authorities warned of a terror plot by sympathizers of the Islamic State armed group.

Police have detained three suspects over the alleged attack threat, with the United States saying it shared intelligence to assist in the investigation.

The main suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots, had allegedly confessed, saying he “intended to carry out an attack using explosives and knives,” according to Austrian domestic intelligence agency (DSN) head Omar Haijawi-Pirchner.

In the social media post Wednesday, Swift thanked the authorities.

“I was also so grateful to the authorities because thanks to them, we were grieving concerts and not lives. I was heartened by the love and unity I saw in the fans who banded together,” she said.

The European leg of Swift’s sold-out tour began in Paris in May and has taken in Sweden, Portugal, Spain, Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Poland.

It concluded on Tuesday with five shows at London’s Wembley stadium.

  • ‘Liberals try to take me down’; Maria B. reacts following criticism for stealing designs from Palestinian collection

‘Liberals try to take me down’; Maria B. reacts following criticism for stealing designs from Palestinian collection

Maria B is under fire after being accused of copying designs for her Palestine campaign.

Over the weekend, designer Maria B. launched a capsule line called the Falesteen Collection. The collection includes T-shirts, two-piece and three-piece lawn suits featuring prints of the black-and-white keffiyeh, colourful houndstooth patterns, and watermelon, symbolising Palestine’s resistance.

One of the designs featured a map of Palestine with a boy merged into the pattern, along with the Palestine flag wrapped in olive branches.

This design caught the attention of artist Leena Ghani, who noticed it was copied. She shared Maria B.’s campaign on her Instagram stories and tagged the page Palestine Quebec, which confirmed that Turkish artist Hacı Balina Atölye created the design.

As the allegation spread online, Palestine Quebec and Leena Ghani urged people to call out the designer and support the artist whose work had been copied. Maria B. did not initially respond to the accusations.

On Tuesday night, however, the designer addressed the issue on her Instagram stories, confirming that she had “unintentionally” used the artist’s work in her collection. She called it an “oversight” and apologised to her followers.

“In this digital age of fast-paced information and viral images, such unintentional oversights can occur. We apologize for the oversight,” her statement read.

“We have contacted the artist, who recognizes our work with empathy and grace and is willing to collaborate with us in our efforts for Gaza. She’s a young and talented artist, please support her work! @hacibalina,” the designer said.

She also criticised those she called “liberals foaming at the mouth” for accusing her of blatant plagiarism.

Maria B. responded to criticism in her stories, saying, “Maria B. copied the Gaza flag. Maria B copied the Gaza map. Maria B copied Keffiyeh. Maria B copied resistance art. Maria B copied watermelon. Watermelon copied embroidery. Low IQ liberals.”

She emphasised, “This is an inspired collection picking up images of resistance,” and clarified that she was not making any money from the sales. “Liberals try to take me down while I’m trying to help raise funds for Gaza. This is Pakistan. Do nothing yourself and tear down anyone who tries to do something, God is enough for me, I will never stop,” she added.

The Turkish artist Atölye shared a photo from Butt’s collection that featured her design, along with the caption, “My artwork in Pakistan.”

Maria B.’s claim that ‘liberals’ were trying to ‘take her down’ overlooks the fact that she did copy the design. While her campaign to donate the proceeds from her sales to Palestine is commendable, copying someone else’s design is not. Whether intentional or not, incidents like this can harm even the noblest campaigns. We hope more brands in Pakistan will educate their teams about plagiarism and take extra care in reviewing their collections.

Maria B. has repeatedly landed in hot waters in recent years for targeting the transgender community and, most recently, for her crusade against Barzakh.

  • Iran executes fortune-teller over rapes

    Iran executes fortune-teller over rapes

Authorities in central Iran executed a male fortune-teller for raping and sexually assaulting his clients, the judiciary said on Wednesday.

“A fortune-teller, who assaulted women and girls was executed in Yazd prison,” said Hossein Tahmasebi, chief justice of the central province, according to the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan Online website.

“The sentence of this rapist fortune-teller was carried out after being issued by the Revolutionary Court of Yazd and confirmed by the supreme judicial authority”.

According to Tahmasebi, the man had “assaulted and raped women and girls under false pretences”, using his fortune-telling services to deceive his clients.

Mizan reported that the convict was arrested sometime between March 2020 and March 2021 and that his request for amnesty was rejected because of “the number of complaints” against him.

The Islamic republic maintains the death penalty for several crimes, including rape and sexual assault.

In July 2023, Iran executed three men after they were convicted of raping women they had lured to a fake cosmetic surgery clinic and injected with anaesthetic drugs.

They were found guilty of conspiring in 12 cases of sexual assault in late 2021 in the southern province of Hormozgan.

Iran executes more people per year than any other nation except China, according to human rights groups including Amnesty.

It generally carries out executions by hanging.
