  • Imran challenges judicial commission investigating audio leaks

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, has challenged the three-member judicial commission that has been established by the government to look into a spate of audio leaks involving senior judges and the judiciary.

    The former Prime Minister (PM) on Monday moved the Supreme Court of Pakistan against the formation of the judicial commission. The petition was submitted by Imran Khan’s attorney, Babar Awan.

    In his petition, the PTI leader has said that no judge could be nominated to the judicial commission without the Chief Justice of Pakistan’s approval.

    He further said that the proper forum for any probe or taking action against any judge was the Supreme Judicial Council.

    On Monday, the judicial commission decided to make its proceedings public.

    Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court Naeem Akhtar Afghan, and Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court Aamer Farooq, are part of the commission.

    Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan appeared in the first meeting of the commission.

    Justice Qazi inquired from the attorney general that under which law the government formed the commission.

    The Attorney General said that this commission was formed under the Commission of Inquiry Act 2016.

    The federal government on Satur­day notified the formation of the commission to probe audio clips leaked on social media over the previous months.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has said that he might get arrested again when he appears before a court in Islamabad on Tuesday.

    “On Tuesday, I’m going to appear before court in Islamabad for various bails and there are 80% chances that I will be arrested,” Imran said that while speaking to Fareed Zakaria on CNN.

    “Everything is being done just to dismantle our democracy, so right now, as we speak, over 10,000 workers have been arrested. My entire senior leadership is in jail,” he added.

    Imran Khan further said that the government is taking such actions against him because they fear they would lose upcoming elections.

    Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said on Sunday that there no new military courts are being established.

    “No new military courts are being established. Law is already present at this time. Courts are present and they have been working for the past 75 years continuously,” said the minister while talking to media in Sialkot.

    He further said that cases would be pursued against individuals whose “footage, faces and identity is showing that they are attacking military installations”, adding that the government was not “snatching anyone’s basic rights”.

    Khawaja termed May 09 protests as “an attack on Pakistan’s integrity and existence”.

    On May 09, supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) took to the streets after party Chairman Imran Khan was arrested from Islamabad High Court. In the ensuing riots, many military and government installations sustained damage, most notably, Jinnah House, the residence of Corp Commander Lahore.

    The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the release of 123 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers who were arrested in connection with May 9 protests following the arrest of party chairman Imran Khan.

    Justice Anwarul Haq heard PTI leader Farrukh Habib’s plea who sought the release of detained party activists.

    The PTI leader’s lawyer told the court that all of the prisoners are political activists.

    The court directed the government to release them without delay.
    The workers were arrested from Faisalabad and are currently detained in different jails throughout Punjab.

    Claim:

    Twitter accounts of both the sons of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan have emerged on the micro-blogging site with usernames @SulemanIsaKhan and @kasimkhanreal. Many people are sharing tweets from the accounts, believing them to be Qasim and Suleman Khan.

    Fact:

    However, the screenshots of the accounts are fake, as are the accounts themselves.

    Imran Khan’s ex-wife and mother of his sons, Jemima Goldsmith, has confirmed that both accounts are imposters.
    “Fake accounts pretending to be my children, created by imposters with a political agenda in Pakistan. This is exactly what I feared would happen when you took away Twitter’s verification blue ticks. FYI my children are not on social media & have no plans to be,” she wrote in a tweet.

    Verdict: The verdict is false.

    Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee has seen immense changes after the arrival of Chairman Najam Sethi.

    Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Najeeb Soomro, has been sacked by the Board, and it is being said that he was unable to play his role in saving several players from injuries.

    Despite a power show of performance by the players in the New Zealand series, many players are playing without proper rest and recovery which caused problems for the management committee. Several players, including Yasir Shah, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Shahawaz Dahani, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Rizwan, Naseem Shah, and Imam-ul-Haq have suffered injuries. Despite not being fully fit, some players were given the go ahead to play, which not only aggravated their injuries but also affected the team.
    Meanwhile, PCB has given an advertisement for the post of Director Sports Medicine.

    Senior General Manager Finance and Accounts, Ateeq Rashid, was also recently asked to hand in his resignation. Another official was sacked due to apparent irregularities regarding honorary match tickets.

    Another director is now also on the hit list. Board officials are not satisfied with his work. Sethi is currently in England, therefore a decision is expected after his return to Pakistan.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif along with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi inaugurated an electricity transmission line project from Iran to Gwadar at Mand-Pishin crossing point of Pakistan-Iran border on Thursday.

    The two leaders also inaugurated a sustenance marketplace at the Mand-Pishin crossing point.

    “This is an auspicious day for Pakistan-Iran friendship,” PM Shehbaz Sharif said while addressing a press briefing.
    “In coming years, these markets would emerge as major trade points,” he added.

    “We have decided to finalise the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries at the earliest,” said the prime minister.

    The project, which has been delayed since 2009, was finished in a record-breaking four months, according to Minister of Information Marriyum Aurangzeb.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan has submitted a written response to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case.
    The PTI chairman was summoned today by NAB in connection with an investigation related to a £190m settlement from the UK at 10am today.

    In the written response, Imran said that it was not possible for him to appear before NAB Rawalpindi and join the investigation as he was in Lahore for obtaining bail in a multitude of cases.

    Imran said that the allegations made by NAB are “absolutely false, frivolous and concocted”.

    He said he was in the process of applying for, and obtaining, bail in a number of other legal cases and would not be available before his protective bail expired on May 22.

    Imran has also asked back for his shaving kit and the clothes that he left behind in Police Lines Islamabad. “Kindly note that although the inquiry report was provided to me during custody, I could not carry the said Inquiry report, or for that matter, my clothes and shaving kit, with me when I attended the court proceedings before the honourable Islamabad High Court on 12-05-2023,” read the document.

    “As such, I would request that before serving me a Call Up Notice and pursuant thereto recording my statement and requiring production of documents accordingly, a copy of the said Inquiry report (along with my clothes and shaving kit that have been left behind in the room where I stayed in Police Lines Islamabad) may be immediately forwarded to me at my address at Zaman Park, or, in the alternate I will instruct my legal counsel in Islamabad, Mr. Gohar Ali Khan, ASC to visit your office at your convenience, to collect the copy of the report of Inquiry I left behind while proceeding to attend the Court hearing on 12-05-2009.”

    A police constable on Tuesday opened fire on a school van in Swat District, killing at least one student and injuring six others.

    The deceased was identified as seven-year-old Aisha.

    The suspect named Alam Khan was arrested on the spot with an FIR registering against him immediately. Alam Khan was posted on security duty of the school since the past three months. The suspect has admitted his crime in front of a court.

    The residents of the area staged a protest against the incident on Wednesday.

    Journalist Iftikhar Firdous has tweeted that after the tragic incident, the Home and Tribal Affairs Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has ordered that psychological reviews of security guards be conducted every six months.
