  • Sher dargya? PML-N lawmakers pass bill trying to bypass SC reserved seats’ verdict

Sher dargya? PML-N lawmakers pass bill trying to bypass SC reserved seats’ verdict

The Parliamentary Affairs Committee of the National Assembly on Wednesday approved a bill proposing amendments to the Election Act 2017 seemingly barring elected assembly members from changing their party affiliation.

The amendments to the bill propose that those individuals who contested elections as independent members cannot change their “affidavit” later to change their party affiliation, apparently bypassing the recent Supreme Court verdict in the case of the reserved seats.

It also proposed that if political parties fail to submit their candidates’ list for reserved seats in the stipulated time by the Election Commission of Pakistan, then it won’t be eligible for those seats.

The bill was passed by the panel with eight votes in favour while four opposed it.

Meanwhile, federal law minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated that the issue of “reserved seats” and independent members joining any political party is obvious.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Ali Muhammad Khan said that this is a private member’s bill and the law minister shouldn’t advocate for it.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker Bilal Azhar Kiyani tabled the bill on Tuesday. The amendments were proposed to Section 66 and Section 104 of the Election Act, 2017.

  • Pakistanis involved in 50% of crimes in Gulf; shocking revelation in Senate

Pakistanis involved in 50% of crimes in Gulf; shocking revelation in Senate

The Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development was informed on Tuesday that Pakistanis are found to be involved in almost 50 percent of the crimes in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

While giving the brief, Secretary Overseas Pakistanis Dr Arshad informed the committee that the UAE, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait have shared reservations on various issues related to the Pakistani labour force working in these states.

In September 2023 the same committee was informed that out of all the Pakistanis leaving the country, beggars are going abroad the most. Out of all the beggars who were arrested, 90 percent turned out to be Pakistanis.

Tahir Niaz from The Nation reported that the secretary of the ministry told the committee that the domestic labour force comprised 71.8 million people, while the diaspora includes 10.7 million individuals, primarily in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the US, the UK, and Canada.

“Moreover, there are issues like criminal activities among the Pakistani workforce abroad. For instance, 50 percent of the crime rate among the labour force in the UAE is reportedly attributed to Pakistanis,” the ministry official told the committee.

However, Nausheen Shah from The News reported the current development has come after a significantly more concerning issue as it highlights the rather “inappropriate” behaviour of Pakistanis in the UAE which includes them making videos in front of women in Dubai.

Ministry officials told the committee today that around 0.6 to 0.8 million Pakistanis go abroad each year, of which 200,000 to 300,000 come back.

Out of the total people travelling abroad, 96 percent go to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, they said.

What problems do other nations have with Pakistanis?

Briefing about the problems other nations have with Pakistan, the officials told the committee that the UAE informed us that we had a quota of 1.6 million, which has exceeded to 1.8 million.

Pakistanis, they said, visit Malaysia for a year, extend their stay, and are then sent to jail. People have also slipped in Iraq, the officials said, noting that their exact number is unknown.

Senator Nasir Abbas said Bangladeshis are securing more jobs than Pakistanis. In Iraq, Pakistanis are “helpless” as they are employed as cheap labour. Abbas added that they are kept as “prisoners” in Iraq.

Moving forward, the officials told the committee members that two million Pakistanis reside in Saudi Arabia and 0.4 million go to the Kingdom every year.

KSA authorities, the officials said, have asked Pakistanis not to send “beggars and sick people”. They added that GCC is modern now, they are focusing on technology and development.

The overseas ministry officials said that Pakistanis going abroad are “unskilled” and noted that our people aren’t being trained as well. “People from other nations are replacing ours.”

Work ethics, work attitudes, and involvement in crime are issues of Pakistanis.

Kuwait has complained of Pakistani nurses refusing to perform certain job-related duties and instead telling ward boys to help patients sit up. The nurses do not learn the language but want to be sent to Europe after spending six months in the country.

Meanwhile, Qatar, as per the officials of the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, has complained about Pakistani labourers refusing to wear safety helmets.

Saudi Arabia has maintained that they will only give jobs to workers who can pass the test of their relevant authority, i.e., the National Centre for Human Resources Development (Takamul).

The officials said nations are “suspicious” of Pakistanis. Around 600,000-800,000 people go abroad, of which 96 per cent travel to the Middle East.

    Future of Pakistani workforce

Ringing the alarm bells for the future of the Pakistani labour force seeking to secure jobs in the UAE, the ministry said that Gulf states are now looking towards Africa as their workers offer even cheaper labour than that of the Pakistani expatriates.

  • Imran Khan signals that PTI ready to talk with establishment

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned in Adiala jail, has categorically signalled that his party was ready for talks with the military establishment, Dawn News has reported.

However, while talking to reporters at Adiala jail, Khan set three preconditions for the talks: the return of PTI’s alleged ‘stolen mandate’, the release of all of the party workers currently detained, and transparent elections.

Earlier, Khan’s sister Aleema Khan delivered a message from Imran Khan to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to “become neutral for the sake of Pakistan.” In 2022, Khan repeatedly berated the army’s leadership for being “neutral”, repeatedly saying that only animals are neutral.

Khan stated that his party has never levelled allegations against the army, saying that even a “spoilt child” was liable to criticism.

He also recalled that General Ziaul Haq was responsible for the judicial murder of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and General Yahya Khan was responsible for the fall of Dhaka.

Khan stated that the party had already nominated Mehmood Khan Achakzai for negotiations and urged the military to nominate their representative for talks.

  • Over 55000 vote for Khalistan Referendum in Canada

Over 55000 vote for Khalistan Referendum in Canada

More than 55,000 Canadian Sikhs voted in the Calgary Khalistan Referendum, dedicated to nine pro-Khalistan Canadian Sikhs who were assassinated by the Indian army in an armed clash.

The families of different Sikh separatist leaders flew in to cast votes and show support for the Khalistan referendum.

Geo’s Murtaza Ali Shah reported that Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a New York attorney and founder of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), addressed the charged crowd and vowed to bombard the Indian Independence Day, held on August 15, with the Khalistan Referendum campaign from Red Fort to Ranchi.
Pannun said that the SFJ, through a global referendum campaign, has equipped every Sikh household with a “powerful bomb that will only explode during Khalistan Referendum voting to liberate Punjab from Indian occupation.”

The choice is yours; either kill your enemy or kill the Indian system, said Pannun to a roaring crowd of thousands waiting to cast a vote in the Khalistan Referendum. He said: “SFJ’s choice of weapon is vote while India’s Modi is using violence to stop Khalistan Referendum. At present, pro-Khalistan Sikhs are not going to kill anyone in retaliation. Still, SFJ is going to kill the Indian system that is responsible for the genocide of Sikhs and the genocide of Punjab. In 1929, Shaheed Bhagat Singh bombarded the Indian legislative assembly to liberate India from British rule.”

Following Pannun’s speech, the Punjab Referendum Commission (PRC) announced to the crowd that the next phase of the Khalistan Referendum would take place in New Zealand in a few months.

Thousands of Sikhs queued from 4 am till 6 am at Calgary’s iconic Municipal to participate in the Khalistan Referendum, voting for creating an independent state of Khalistan for the Sikh nation. The nine Canadian national Sikhs assassinated by India for their political beliefs are Shaheed Lakhbir Singh Rode, Shaheed Bhupinder Singh Kooner, Shaheed Harjinder Singh Para, Shaheed Talwinder Singh Parmar, Shaheed Surinder Singh Shinder Commando, Shaheed Balbir Singh Khaira, Shaheed Jathedar Hardeep Singh Nijjar, Shaheed Mohinder Singh Kooner and Shaheed Surinder Singh Ravi.

Sikhs who gathered outside the city hall were carrying flags of Khalistan. The road outside has been decorated with large posters of Sikhs who embraced martyrdom for the Sikh causes – and are revered by the Sikhs across the world. The banners carried pictures of Sikh heroes and paid tribute to them.

Throughout the day, Calgary’s town hall echoed with slogans of “Khalistan Zindabad”, “Punjab banal ga Khalistan”, “Delhi banal ga Khalistan,” Rajasthan banal ga Khalistan”, Modi, stop terrorism against Sikhs”, India is a terrorist state”. The Sikhs said they will adhere to the principle set by their Gurus and will always look up the examples set by Sikh freedom fighters, including Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was assassinated last year by Indian agents in Surrey.

Veteran Khalistani leaders and President of the Council of Khalistan, Dr Bakhshish Singh Sandhu, said the turnout had amazed everyone. “The queue at one point stretched to nearly four kilometres. This is the measurement of Sikhs’ desire for freedom from India.

All the voting phases in the Khalistan Referendum are being held under the guidance and supervision of a panel of non-aligned direct democracy experts from the Punjab Referendum Commission (PRC). The Commission’s approved third-party staff conducts the whole voting process, from registration to supervision of ballot boxes and sealing the ballots at the end of the voting day to maintain the highest level of transparency. The PRC is conducting the voting on the question of “Should Indian Governed Punjab Be An Independent Country?” with two options of “Yes” and No”.

The Khalistan Referendum voting started on October 31, 2021, from London, UK, and has so far been held in several countries and cities across the UK: Geneva, Switzerland; Rome and Milan (Italy); the Australian cities of Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney; the American cities of San Francisco and Sacramento; the Canadian cities of Brampton, Mississauga, Malton (Ontario), Surrey Vancouver (British Columbia), and now Calgary.
