PTI’s Omar Ayub escapes arrest in Islamabad

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Secretary General Omar Ayub evaded arrest when his residence in the F-10 Sector was raided by Islamabad police, along with Mianwali police, on Sunday following the issuance of his warrants by an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Sargodha.

Following the incident, Mianwali police clarified that their assistant sub-inspector (ASI) had not gone to Ayub’s residence with the intention of arresting the opposition leader. Instead, he was there to serve the bailable warrants.

Ayub went into hiding after successfully escaping the raid and criticized the authorities for being so “desperate” to arrest him.

The PTI leader took to X (formerly Twitter) to lash out at the government, saying, “The federal government, Punjab government, and agencies must be very desperate to arrest the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.”

PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan spoke to Dawn, stating, “Some of the policemen were in uniform while some were in plainclothes… fortunately, the PTI secretary general was not at home.”

  • Bollywood icon Zeenat Aman celebrates the great Nazia Hassan

Bollywood icon Zeenat Aman celebrates the great Nazia Hassan

Bollywood icon Zeenat Aman recently celebrated 44 years of the film ‘Qurbani’, taking to Instagram to remember her special connection with the late Pakistani pop star Nazia Hassan.

In a heartfelt post, Aman shared how she met Nazia and her brother Zoheb Hassan, a meeting that changed their careers forever.
It all started one evening in London when Aman, tired from a day of shooting, was approached by a polite Pakistani family. Despite her exhaustion, she decided to meet them in her hotel suite.

“There was a family of three waiting for me in the lobby of my London hotel, but I was not keen to make small talk with fans. I had just wrapped a day of shoot, and all I wanted was silence, a hot shower, and my bed,” Aman recalled.

“Yet my convent school education would not allow me to be rude. So I smiled sweetly and took a seat with my thoughts wandering to the luxurious suite that awaited me just a few floors above,” she added.

“The lady was elegant. Her name was Muniza. And with her were her two teenage children. A quiet girl named Nazia and a boy named Zoheb. I hadn’t planned to entertain them for long but soon found myself drawn into deep dialogue with Muniza. They were a charming and cultured family of Pakistani origin, and to my surprise I found myself inviting them to join me in my suite. That night I learned that Nazia and Zoheb were pursuing music, and I even enjoyed a brief demo of young Nazia’s pipes,” revealed the acting legend.

Aman introduced Nazia to actor-director Feroz Khan during the making of ‘Qurbani’. Impressed by Nazia’s voice, Khan had her record the iconic song ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ with music producer Biddu. The song became a huge hit and defined disco music in South Asia.

Aman admired Nazia’s talent and contribution to the film, saying, “To me, there is only one breakthrough performance in the film, and that’s Nazia’s.” She acknowledged how Nazia shaped Indian and Pakistani music culture.

The great singer passed away in 2000 at a shockingly young age after an intense battle with cancer, leaving a void in the hearts of her fans and admirers, including Aman who remembers her as a “shooting star who blazed hot, bright, and fast.” Despite her short career, Nazia’s music legacy lives on with hits like ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’, ‘Boom Boom’, and ‘Disco Deewane’.

In Aman’s words, “The song [‘Aap Jaise Koi’] belongs entirely to that young Pakistani girl who revolutionized how we South Asians disco.”

  • No room for your second or third wife at Islamabad Club

No room for your second or third wife at Islamabad Club

In an interesting development, the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Divisions debated diverse topics this week, including the Cabinet Division’s luxuries, restrictions on the entry of its members’ second wives into the Islamabad Club, and Chahat Fateh Ali Khan’s charisma.

The committee was informed that the Cabinet Division had 18 bullet-proof vehicles and six helicopters, an aviation squadron, Toshakhana gifts as well as the power to declare national public holidays.

Saleem Mandviwala pointed out the apparent unfair rule by an Islamabad Club, which doesn’t recognise a member’s second or third wife and hence doesn’t allow them to enter the premises. The committee recognised the “significance” of the issue because Islam permits men to have four marriages.

The members were informed about the government’s changes in the procedure for giving away civil awards.

“For civil awards, it is evaluated now that the recipient has done more than usual work in his or her field,” the Cabinet Division special secretary told the committee. “Singers are also considered for awards based on the views of their YouTube videos,” he added.

Reacting to this, Committee member Aamir Chishti asked the Secretary whether famous internet personality Chahat Fatteh Ali Khan’s song ‘Bado Badi’ would be considered for an award – given its number of views on YouTube.

In a hilarious moment, Aamir Chishti then turned to the committee chair, Rana Mahmoodul Hasan and asked him if he had heard the song, to which he replied, “I have. It gave me a headache.”

  • Diabetes drugs like Ozempic lower cancer risks: study

Diabetes drugs like Ozempic lower cancer risks: study

A class of diabetes medications, which include the best-selling drug Ozempic, are associated with a reduced risk of certain obesity-related cancers, according to a study released Friday.

Published in the journal JAMA, the study compared patients with Type 2 diabetes who were treated with insulin versus patients who were given a class of drug known as GLP-1 agonists, like Ozempic, between 2005 and 2018.

The researchers found that the patients who received GLP-1 agonists had a significantly lower risk of developing 10 out of 13 cancers studied, including kidney, pancreatic, esophageal, ovarian, liver and colorectal cancer.

Among the cancers which saw no significant change in risk were thyroid cancer and breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

“Obesity is well known to be associated with at least 13 cancer types,” study author Rong Xu said in an email to AFP.

“Our study provides evidence that GLP-1RAs hold promise in breaking the link between obesity and cancer,” Xu said.

Among the drugs studied were semaglutide — commercially sold as Ozempic — as well as liraglutide and others. Ozempic was approved in the United States in 2017.

GLP-1 agonists have been around for about 20 years, but a new generation of these drugs, among them Ozempic, has been popularized for their more significant weight loss effects.

Xu suggested that the protective benefits demonstrated in the study may encourage doctors to prescribe GLP-1 treatments for diabetes patients instead of other medicines like insulin.
