    Islamabad Police intensifies crackdown against wrong parking

    The Islamabad Police has initiated a crackdown on individuals who improperly park their vehicles, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and disrupting the smooth flow of traffic by occupying footpaths.

    Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi has instructed the police force to launch a campaign specifically targeting vehicles parked incorrectly, particularly in busy markets. He has given special directives to SSP Traffic Muhammad Sarfraz Virk to oversee the operation, as confirmed by a public relations officer on Sunday.

    All Zonal DSPs have been tasked with ensuring the enforcement of traffic regulations and taking action against those who disrupt traffic discipline within the city.

    Enforcement actions have been carried out against administrators of showrooms and shopping malls in various areas including G-11 Markaz, F-10, F-11, G-8, G-9, I-8 Markaz, Blue Area, Jinnah Super Market, F-6 Super Market, Aabpara, and Bhara Kahu markets. Vehicles parked on footpaths have been removed, with warnings issued for compliance with regulations under the threat of strict enforcement measures.

    Throughout the year, the Islamabad Police have issued over 42,000 fines for improper parking, with several vehicles impounded for failing to clear footpath areas.

    SSP Traffic said that ensuring convenience for road users remains a top priority for the Islamabad Police, achieved through maintaining traffic discipline.

    Specialised teams have been formed to address illegal parking and clear footpaths, with stringent actions planned against violators.

    In his inaugural address at the Scout Auditorium, the newly appointed Chief of Metropolitan Traffic Police, DIG Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, stressed the importance of fostering a positive relationship with the public among traffic officials.

    Under his directive, traffic officers are prohibited from issuing challans between 5pm and Iftar, with the aim of ensuring smooth traffic flow to facilitate citizens’ journey home.

    Instead of immediately penalising families for traffic violations, Cheema advocates for a more lenient approach, urging officers to issue warnings in such cases. He stressed the gravity of one-way violations, highlighting their potential to cause accidents and disrupt traffic flow, and highlighted the need for strict enforcement.

    Furthermore, Cheema underscored that any misconduct or confrontation by officers will result in disciplinary action. Challan officers are instructed to only issue fines for moving violations, while addressing the issue of obstructive parking by cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles.

    According to Express News, to enhance accountability and transparency, officers are required to wear body-worn cameras during challan issuance. Additionally, Cheema has mandated unity among officers and officials.

    Among other directives, strict adherence to the fast lane on Shahrah-e-Faisal and the utilisation of designated bike lanes by motorcyclists are enforced. Moreover, the removal of illegally parked six and nine-seater rickshaws has been ordered.

    Cheema has instructed all sections to prominently display timing boards for vehicle lifting in their respective areas, with vehicles only to be towed in cases of double or illegal parking.

    “I put the 1124 helpline to the test,” Jannat Mirza revealed to her followers. “I was genuinely surprised by the quick response I received.” She recounted a simulation where she mimicked an accident scenario and dialled 1124. Almost instantly, a responsive team was dispatched and promptly arrived at the specified location.

    Emphasising the critical role of the 1124 helpline, Jannat Mirza’s father, an experienced police officer, stated, “While many are familiar with 1122, being aware of 1124 is equally crucial. The goal is to offer timely assistance, and this helpline allows us to do precisely that.”

    In 2007, a centralised 24/7 call centre helpline, 1124, was established to receive calls from citizens all across Punjab. These incoming calls trigger a rapid response mechanism from Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) posts, and, in areas without PHP presence, Punjab Police is dispatched to assist the individual in need. This comprehensive service encompasses immediate assistance in cases of vehicle breakdowns, other emergencies, crimes against oneself or reported by a third party, traffic regulation and management concerns, accident response, and facilitating rescue and evacuation to nearby medical facilities.

    Moreover, this helpline serves as a vital platform for registering inputs in various domains and subsequently relaying the data to relevant authorities. One notable application is reporting fire hazards within residential areas. The call centre incorporates advanced features, including call recording, routing, interactive voice response (IVR), and other cutting-edge functionalities, to efficiently manage calls from citizens throughout Punjab. Importantly, this helpline can be dialled without the need for an area code, streamlining access to timely assistance.
