Asfandyar Wali wins defamation case against PTI leader

In a significant legal victory, Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali Khan has emerged triumphant in a defamation lawsuit against Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader and former provincial minister Shaukat Ali Yousafzai, resulting in a Rs150 million judgment in his favor.

Additional district and session judge Ejazur Rehman Qazi announced an ex parte verdict in the case as Yousafzai didn’t attend court proceedings.

Asfandyar had sued the PTI leader through his counselsc Tariq Afghan and Sajeed Afridi, for alleging in a presser on July 25, 2019, that the ANP chief had “sold Pashtuns for $25 million.”

Yousafzai was the spokesman for the then-PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The counsel for Asfandyar told the court that their client was the son of Pakhtun leader Khan Abdul Wali Khan and the grandson of Pakhtun leader Bacha Khan, both prominent leaders of international repute in the Independence Movement.

They emphasized Asfandyar Wali Khan’s extensive political experience, having served multiple terms in the National Assembly, as well as in the Senate and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.

The court noted that while the plaintiff presented six witnesses and substantial evidence, the defendant failed to attend court proceedings and produced only one witness. Consequently, the court proceeded ex parte against Yousafzai.

In its detailed judgment, the court emphasized that the burden of proof lay with the defendant, who failed to provide any evidence to substantiate his allegations. The court determined that the derogatory remarks made by Yousafzai during the press conference were defamatory and lacked any justification or explanation.

Based on the evidence presented, the court ruled in favor of Asfandyar, awarding him Rs100 million in damages and an additional Rs50 million in aggravated damages. The judgment underscored that the plaintiff had successfully established his case and was entitled to the decree sought.

  • Mazay Khatam; No more 1st class for PM and five-star hotels for ministers

Mazay Khatam; No more 1st class for PM and five-star hotels for ministers

In a bid to curb expenses, the federal government has rolled out a stringent travel advisory affecting top-tier officials, including the president, prime minister, chief justice, services chiefs, and bureaucrats.

Effective immediately, the advisory mandates specific classes for air travel, categorizing officials based on their positions.

Cabinet Division said the president and the CJP will travel in ‘class-1’, whereas the PM, Senate chairman, National Assembly speaker, ministers, services chiefs, MNAs, federal secretaries, grade-22 officers, and ambassadors will travel in business class.

Other officers of the federal government, attached departments, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and other institutions under the administrative control of various ministries/divisions will travel in economy class.

    Obligatory Visits Only

According to the advisory, foreign travel of officers shall be allowed only in cases of obligatory visits and that too in the economy class.

This move comes as part of a new foreign travel policy aiming to rationalize overseas visits, instill austerity measures, and enforce accountability.

Key provisions of the policy include obtaining permission from an austerity committee for non-essential visits, providing comprehensive travel details to the Foreign Ministry, and a ban on simultaneous foreign trips by ministers and secretaries unless under unavoidable circumstances approved by the prime minister.

    No Five Star Hotels

Additionally, the policy discourages stays in five-star hotels, prohibits support staff from accompanying government officers, and encourages teleconferencing as a viable alternative. Ministers, ministers of state, advisers, and assistants are limited to three foreign visits per year, with exceptions granted in special cases.

Furthermore, ministers are prohibited from traveling during National Assembly or Senate sessions, and all foreign visit details must be submitted to the Foreign Ministry within 15 days.

The guidelines also address diplomatic relations, mandating adherence to the ‘One China Policy’ for interactions with Taiwan and requiring special permission for contacts with Korea. Visiting India necessitates permission from the interior and foreign ministries.

Lastly, hosting foreign companies is discouraged, and visits by experts and consultants are permitted only during bilateral discussions.

  • Rabya Kulsoom: Aurat March seems to be about hating men

Rabya Kulsoom: Aurat March seems to be about hating men

Actress Rabya Kulsoom was a guest on the FHM podcast where she discussed the feminist movement Aurat March. She shared that feminist movements in Pakistan, such as Aurat March, aren’t addressing the key issues faced by Pakistani women, straying from the original goal of feminism. “Aurat March isn’t about hating men. It’s about making sure all women have rights. Like your daughter being able to go to school, work, and be independent. But now, Aurat March and our idea of feminism seem to be about hating men. Not taking care of your husband, not helping him find his clothes, or not serving him food – is that really feminism?”

Rabya went on to say that instead of what’s happening now, Aurat March should talk more about things like domestic violence and encourage women to read their nikkahnama. “This is what feminism is about,” she said. “I support Aurat March, but I wonder where it’s heading. Some of the signs I’ve seen online made me feel like I can’t be part of this.”

The actress from ‘Mujhay Pyar Hua Tha’ said it’s lost its way. Instead of promoting equality for everyone, it’s spreading hate against men.
“The ones who really need feminism aren’t getting the support they need,” said the actress. “If a guy sees a sign saying ‘Find your socks yourself,’ he won’t understand what feminism truly means. Instead, he might end up treating his wife badly.”

“Stop using slogans like ‘Pick up your own sock’ or ‘Heat up your own food’ because feminism is much bigger and more complicated than that.
