    ‘Wo bhi Afridi hai’: Shaheen ignores Shahid Afridi’s advice on assuming Qalandars’ captaincy

    Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has said that he asked pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi to not assume the role of a captain for a few years, but the fast-bowler did not pay heed to the cricket great’s advice.

    Shahid Afridi, speaking during a programme on Samaa TV, said: “I had advised Shaheen to wait for a year or two before accepting captaincy so that he can focus more on his bowling. But since he is also an Afridi, he didn’t listen to me.”

    “Having said that, I’m happy that he has decided to accept this responsibility and I hope that he proves me wrong,” the former skipper said.

    The star fast bowler was named captain of the Lahore Qalandars earlier this week for the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

    Shaheen, during the same show, said he would attempt to do well for his team and also noted that he had experienced players on his side, who would help him during his role as the captain.

    “I will try to do well for my side and maintain a good environment. I have players like [Mohammad Hafeez], Fakhar [Zaman], and Rashid [khan], who have the experience of captaincy, in the team which will help me in the leadership department,” the pacer said.

    The PSL’s latest edition will be played in Karachi from January 27 to February 7 and in Lahore from February 10-27.

    The first match will be staged under the lights of the National Stadium Karachi, where Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans will go head-to-head.

    Indian men’s hockey team won the bronze medal at Asian Champions Trophy after beating Pakistan 4-3 in third-place play-off match.

    Earlier, India suffered defeat at the hands of Japan with a 3-5 scoreline in the semifinals the previous day after having topped the round-robin stages with an unbeaten record.

    In the other semifinal, South Korea beat Pakistan 6-5.

    India will be going home with the bronze medal.

    It was India’s second win over Pakistan in the tournament after having beaten the same opponents 3-1 in the round-robin stages.

    “It is disappointing for us because we scored more field goals,” said Pakistan captain Umar Bhutta after the semi-final match, referring to his side’s four field goals while the South Koreans only got one from open play.

    “We played a good match but the two goals we conceded from penalty corners hurt us,” he said.

    Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ramiz Raja on Wednesday addressed the recent controversy surrounding spinner Yasir Shah and said that it is not good for cricket in the country.

    Shah was booked in a case registered at Islamabad’s Shalimar Police Station for allegedly aiding in the rape and harassment of a 14-year-old girl. In the first information report (FIR) that has been registered, the girl stated that Yasir Shah’s friend Farhan had allegedly raped her at gunpoint and then filmed the act.

    “Yasir Shah is a circuit player and it is a no-brainer on whom players need to hang out with and socialise with, while we train and educate these players, they are in ambassadorial positions and should know with whom and where to socialise,” said Raja while addressing the media on Wednesday.

    “I don’t know what is the truth in this case but it is a fact that such headlines are not good for Pakistan cricket and especially at a time when there is a feel-good factor going through Pakistan cricket now,” he added.

    The girl had further stated that Yasir Shah had warned her of severe consequences if she went to the authorities to tell about the incident.

    “Yasir Shah said that he was a very influential person and that he knew a high-ranking official. Yasir Shah and Farhan make videos and rape underage girls,” she has stated in the FIR.

    Responding to the entire incident, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had said: “The PCB is presently gathering information at its end and will only offer a comment when in possession of complete facts.”

    Yasir Shah has played 46 Tests for Pakistan, managing to take 235 wickets with his best figures being 8-41.

    “Just as Allah has given a good wife to my son, I pray he gives it to all, and may Allah give a good damaad (son-in-law) to all the daughters as Allah has given to Nawaz Sharif in my form,” said Capt Safdar.
    

    Talking about his son Junaid Safdar’s wedding, Capt Safdar said, “If I had sung a song at Junaid’s wedding, then maybe all the fun would have been ruined. I have been singing my wedding song for 30 years, I will sing my son’s wedding song for the next three years.”

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Noor Alam Khan heavily criticised his government while speaking on Geo News programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Sath’. Alam said, “I have to raise the voice for the people of Pakistan. I don’t care about the political seats, they are temporary.”
    

    Noor Alam Khan further said that he made certain promises to the people of Pakistan. He reiterated the party manifesto of providing sufficient gas, combating load shedding, and said that people voted for the party for the promises it had made in the past.
    

    Talking about competence, Noor Khan said, “You have to deliver, people will reject you if you don’t perform. The people who vote for us require good performance and if we don’t deliver, we are the ones to blame. I am sorry if it’s our incompetence, then we will blame Noor Alam, Shahzeb, or some institution for the shortcomings but not ourselves.”
    

    “The fault and blame will always be directed towards the government, we are the ones who make the policy. [Government] is the provider. Do not pat the ones who curse others and say you did well, pat the ones who serve your people,” said Noor Khan.
    

    

    


    

    

    

    “[PM] Imran Khan should look at the people on his right and left to know about their assets and how they grew their assets,” said the PTI MNA.
    

    “If he closes his eyes [and condones what is happening around him], it will not set the affairs in order. He will have to solve the problems of inflation, power outages, and gas shortage.”

    Replying to a query about the party tickets, Noor Alam said the PTI did not take anyone on board for tickets and doled them out to the members of the family. “So, what happened [in the LG elections] was an evident outcome,” he said.

    Pakistan cricket team’s power hitter Fakhar Zaman teased speedster Haris Rauf after pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as captain of Lahore Qalandars in the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
    

    Taking to Twitter, the batter congratulated Shaheen and wrote: “Many congratulations Shaheen Afridi long way to go super star.”
    

    He also warned Rauf, saying: “Haris Rauf ab koi ghalti na karna match ma. (Haris Rauf don’t make any mistake in the match from now onwards.)”
    

    

    


    

    

    

    Replying to Fakhar, Rauf said: “kuch ni kehta mujhay full yakeen hai apnay skipper par. (He will not say anything, I have full trust in my skipper.)”
    

    While he also extended good wishes to Shaheen for the appointment. “Best wishes and Best of luck buddy,” he wrote.
    

    Shaheen tweeted that it is an honour for him to lead Lahore Qalandars. He also pledged to win the hearts and the trophy as well.
    

    

    


    

    

    

    The franchise made the announcement in a press conference at the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore on Monday. Afridi has replaced Sohail Akhtar, who was the captain of the team since 2018.
    

    Several people from the cricket fraternity congratulated the 21-year-old cricketer. Hassan Ali also took to Twitter to congratulate his “partner”.
    

    

    


    

    

    

    The seventh edition of PSL will start on January 27.

    As per reports, the minister while talking about development in his constituency of Jalgaon compared the smooth roads to the veteran actress’ cheeks.

    Hema Malini called out the minister for his comment and said his comments were not in good taste. She also took a dig at Lalu Yadav while reacting. Speaking to ANI, Hema Malini said, “A trend of such statements was started by Lalu Ji years ago and many people have followed this trend. Such comments are not in a good taste.” 
    

    

    


    

    

    

    MP Hema Malini further added, “One should not do this. If normal people are talking such things, you cannot adjust that, but if a Member of Parliament or anybody connected to our constituency (says), I don’t think it is in good taste. Any woman should not be used for saying such things.” 
    

    The minister Gulabrao Patil issued an apology, stating that he did not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings. 
    

    On the work front, the Baghban star has currently stopped signing films due to her political career. 
    

    Earlier, Earlier in 2005, Lalu Prasad Yadav received backlash when he had promised to make Bihar’s roads as smooth as Hema Malini’s cheeks. Madhya Pradesh law minister PC Sharma brought back the analogy in 2019 when he said the state’s pothole-ridden roads would soon be made “pretty” like the Dream Girl star’s cheeks.
    

    Recently the Rajasthan’s Minister Rajendra Singh Gudha has courted controversy after saying that roads in his constituency should be made like “Katrina Kaif’s cheeks”.
    

    Attacking the minister over his bizarre comments, BJP spokesperson Ram Lal Sharma said, “Giving such a statement about women is indecent. The Chief Minister should take strict action.     Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari, while addressing party workers at Zardari House, said that the ‘superpower’ was asking to share some formula but he told them that first this [government] should be sent packing and then talks could be held.
    

    “I said it is the parliament [in 2018] that this hotchpotch sort of [government] could not last,” said Zardari without taking any names. He further added, “The conditions are such that now they are asking for help. We should make a way, devise a formula. I have told them there is no formula.”
    

    “Your formulas are the reason that the country is in this state. The answer is pretty straightforward now. Send them packing and then talk with us,” said Zardari.
    

    “The superpower said to me that they made me the most powerful civilian president. [So I said] I gave all the power to the parliament within three months,” said the former president.
    

    He said that building Pakistan was easy but they could neither build the country nor listen and understand. But a time would come when they would have to listen, understand and follow our advice, he said without naming anyone.
    

    “I just need your prayers to have more strength.” He said, “I would make them understand Bhuttoism and make them run.”

    Responding to the Twitter user, Aakash shared the stats for the most T20 runs scored in a calender year, which clearly showed that Rizwan was ahead of Kohli.
    

    He further wrote: “People see what they want to see. It wasn’t a comparison with anyone. It’s a fact. Number of innings/matches irrelevant. It’s incredible that we can’t even appreciate an effort without caveats.”
