Punjab govt removes name of Hamid Mir’s father from underpass

The Punjab government has renamed the Waris Mir Underpass on the provincial capital’s Canal Bank Road near the Punjab University (PU), where the late writer and intellectual taught journalism for about 25 years.

The name of Waris Mir, a Hilale Imtiaz recipient, was removed from the underpass on Saturday and renamed the Kashmir Underpass in a sudden and mysterious move that has been condemned by the Waris Mir Foundation.

Senior journalist and anchorperson Hamid Mir’s father, Waris, taught for 30 years at the PU’s Mass Communication Department.

He was not the only one to be honoured by the state in March 2013, since all newly-constructed underpasses, which tallied up to more than a dozen across the city, were named after outstanding intellectuals and prominent personalities, including Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Ashfaq Ahmed, Habib Jalib, Justice A R Cornelius, Ustad Daman, Chaudhry Rehmat Ali, Khushaal Khan Khatak, Liaqat Ali Khan, Chakare Azam Rind, Justice A R Kiyani and Patras Bokhari.

The names had been decided through a procedure in several meetings of the City District Government, headed by a former judge of the Supreme Court (SC).

Commenting on the move, Waris Mir Foundation spokesperson said “it was nothing but an act of aversion, not against Waris Mir alone, but a sequence of hatred and uncalled-for enmity towards the Pakistani media, in general, which seems to be a line of action of the government”.

“This act, in general, has only been secretly carried out to hurt the sentiments of hundreds of Waris Mir’s students, readers and his posterity,” the spokesperson added.

Student arrested for posing as PRO to CM Buzdar

A university student, posing as the public relations officer (PRO) to Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar was arrested and sent to Adiala jail.

According to police sources, Hamza Feroz, a resident of Gulraiz Colony, Rawalpindi, wanted police protocol for his parents who returning from Hajj. In this matter, he called the police security branch and introduced himself as the chief minister’s PRO and asked for police deployment along the route starting from Golra Mor to Soan Camp.

Feroz’s demand made the chief security officer (CSO) of Special Branch suspicious, who then verified details and found them to be fake. The CSO then informed the city police officer and alerted the police.

Hamza along with his brother was going to the Islamabad International Airport (IIA) in a luxury car with a flashing blue revolving light and Pakistan’s flag on its front to receive their parents when the police intercepted them for driving recklessly. Upon investigation, it was revealed that he was the same person posing to be the CM’s PRO. The police then took them into custody.

It was further revealed that the vehicle the brothers were driving was not verified and no customs had been paid on it. The car was seized by the customs staff while the student claiming to be the PRO to the chief minister was sent to Adiala jail. Hamza’s brother obtained pre-arrest bail.

Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has already directed all administrative departments and divisional and district police chiefs not to entertain requests made in person or on phone by unknown persons posing themselves as his relatives and to double-check anyone who claims to be. The directives were issued after some people had falsely represented themselves as relatives of the chief minister in order to get favours.

Karachi-based matchmaker Mrs Khan says women are to blame for divorces

Welcome to your daily dose of cringe.

A Karachi-based matchmaker, who is popularly known as Mrs Khan, on live television said that rising divorces are due to women’s inability to bow down before their husbands and because they argue too much.

“We were told from the start that we should hold our tongue and keep it in control,” Mrs Khan said. “If a woman keeps her tongue in check, we wouldn’t have to face these problems. Such problems arise when women are unable to control themselves and try to dominate their husbands.”

She continued, “We were told that when the husband comes home, his shoes and clothes should be properly placed. There should be a roti on the tawa just ready to be served with the salan, which is supposed to have been prepared beforehand. But girls nowadays – they say that will not make rotis or do any work.”

Phir shaadi kyun ki?” she asked angrily. “If you’re not capable of doing this, then don’t get married…Until and unless you’re not a proper woman then don’t get married. Marriage means responsibility.”

When the host interrupted Mrs Khan and said that girls say “Hum maasi ban kar thori kisi kay ghar ja rahe hain, hum toh biwi ban kar ja rahe hain,” Mrs Khan attacked her.

“Were they maids in their parent’s house? Or are they some minister or governor’s daughter? You’ll have to do it [house work] like your mother. Who would take care of you and your needs, give you food etc? Who would bring money to the house? The same rules apply in your own marriage.”

She then reiterated her earlier point that no matter strata of the society girls belong to they must always keep their mouths shut and never voice their opinions.

She then proceeded to say that the media has ruined women and encouraged them to “open their mouths” while the husband listens silently.

Needless to say, Mrs Khan’s comments sparked outrage among women who were disgusted by her misogynist and outdated comments.

And men had a field day because they found a woman who agrees with their misogynist thoughts.

  • CM Buzdar sends mangoes as gifts to TV anchors and party workers

Chief Minister (CM) Punjab Usman Buzdar has been alleged of using public money to send mangoes as gifts to T.V anchors, ministers and party workers.

A Daily Times writer, Zeeshan Khan Niazi from his Twitter account had yesterday posted pictures of the list including names of Pakistan Tehreeke Insaf (PTI) party workers, ministers, T.V anchors from ARY News channel, among else, to whom mangoes were being sent as a gift.

Further proving those pictures to be authentic, Arshad Sharif, who is a programme host on ARY news channel has posted pictures of courier boxes and wrote that he has returned the gift and urged Usman Buzdar to give them to “deserving people”, instead.

Furthermore, in another tweet, he wrote that he has received multiple calls from the chief minister’s staff from different numbers and told them that he “does not accept gifts from government officials”.

However, chief minister’s spokesperson Dr. Shahbaz Gill has rejected claims of using public money and clarified that CM Buzdar has used his own money to buy these gifts, that are worth a few hundred only.

  • What to expect from Hamza Ali Abbasi’s wedding

What to expect from Hamza Ali Abbasi’s wedding

Pakistan’s IT bachelor Hamza Ali Abbasi is all ready to tie the knot this weekend and everyone has got their popcorns ready because it’s going to be one hell of an event. Even though Hamza in his wedding announcement has said that both the nikkah and the valima will be simple affairs, we all know where a celebrity is getting married and lots of famous people are invited, the event can hardly count as simple. It’s more of a glittering affair than anything else.

    Outfits

Hamza’s outfit is a no-brainer. Whether it’s an award function or a casual day out, Hamza is always seen in a plain black shalwar kameez. Hence it is likely that he will stick to his usual attire, on the nikkah at least. Though we think that he might wear a white shalwar kameez on his nikkah instead. For his reception, he might opt for a sherwani – he is occasionally spotted sporting one. Also let’s not forget, Hamza will be bald at his wedding, given that he recently returned fro Hajj, but we’re sure he’ll sport it with confidence. We do hope he wears better shoes though.

    Hum Awards 2018

As for Naimal, we’re can’t exactly say which designer she will wear. On her Instagram, she has donned a variety of Islamabad-based designers from Maheen Shah to Zamrud. In her last Instagram post, Naimal was wearing an outfit by Zainab Salman so it’s possible that she might don an outfit by the designer on one of her functions. As for the colour, given her love for beige attires, we think that she might wear an outfit of the same colour on her nikkah.

    Guest List

Everyone has been speculating whether PM Khan will be attending or not, but according to the Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Media, the PM will not be attending as he has stopped making social appearances. However, senior members of the PTI leadership might attend the shaadi.

It is expected that the entire cast and makers of The Legend of Maula Jatt – Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Ammara Hikmat, Gohar Rasheed and Bilal Lashari – will be in attendance.

Naimal’s co-stars from Anaa – Hania Aamir, Shehzad Saleem, Usman Mukhtar – are also likely to be attending the event. Hania has also worked with Hamza in Parwaaz Hai Junoon.

Humayun Saeed has said that he will not be able to attend as he is not in the country. Whether Hamza’s fellow actors from Jawani Phir Nai Aani will be attending or not is unclear. They’ve all sent their congratulations though.

Hamza Ali Abbasi slams critics, explains what ‘platonic friendship’ means

Hamza Ali Abbasi’s wedding to actor Naimal Khawar Khan is without a doubt the talk of the town. After the actor penned a long letter in which he explained his reasons for marrying Naimal, he was brutally trolled.

Hamza in his shaadi announcement had written, “Some people get married for themselves because either they fall in love or because their lonely or maybe because of family or to have kids, these are also good reasons, but believe me when your sole reason is to please Allah then Allah makes a man like me, who could never sustain anything emotional with the opposite gender, could never comprehend the idea of marriage in his head, Allah makes that man go up to his very platonic friend of two years Naimal and tell her that he doesn’t want a relationship (that GF/BF nonsense) neither is he claiming to be in love with her but he wants to marry her with the intention of strengthening his very turbulent efforts to walk a path which pleases Allah and to my surprise she agrees not just to marry me but also expresses her joy in walking this path with me & now we can’t even breathe without each other.”

In a follow-up tweet, he further clarified that there was no “love story” between the two and they were “just friends for 2 years and recently Allah put it in my heart to ask her to marry me.”

Following the floods of jokes and memes on Hamza and his platonic friendship, Hamza again took to social media to pen a long thread on what platonic means and the different ways of finding love.

What do you think of Hamza’s advice?

  • Kashmir crisis: Sri Lanka rejects claims, says ‘it never supported Pakistan’

Kashmir crisis: Sri Lanka rejects claims, says ‘it never supported Pakistan’

In what is being termed as an embarrassment for the country, Sri Lanka has rejected Pakistan’s claims of enjoying President Maithripala Sirisena’s support against Indian decision to revoke Article 370 of its constitution in held Kashmir.

“The president acknowledged that Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed territory and expressed his desire that this dispute should be resolved according to wishes of Kashmiris under UN [United Nations] Resolutions,” read a statement issued following Pakistani High Commissioner Maj Gen (r) Dr Shahid Ahmad Hashmat’s meeting with the Sri Lankan president Tuesday.

According to the statement, President Sirisena “also offered Sri Lanka’s mediation and facilitation of dialogue between Pakistan and India to re-activate the SAARC [South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation] forum”.

The Pakistani High Commission’s claims, however, were rejected by the Sri Lankan president on Thursday.

“The President’s Media Division wishes to state that the said meeting took place at the request of the High Commissioner of Pakistan and during which he briefed the president about the recent developments with regard to India’s abrogation of Section 370 and annulling of Article 35A of the Constitution of India.”

It added that the president gave a patient hearing to the high commissioner’s views and said that both Pakistan and India have excellent friendly relations with Sri Lanka, adding that the country’s interest is to see the growth of regional cooperation.

“The president did not make any other comment on the issues pertaining to Pakistan and India,” it concluded.
